Glass ionomer cement (GIC) has the unique fluoride release property and able to form ionic bond with tooth structure. However, the brittleness of the material results in low hardness. In the present study, a new approach in utilization of local waste materials as fillers for improvement of hardness of GIC is reported. The synthesized wollastonite and mine-silica by-product were individually incorporated into commercial GIC and the Vickers hardness were evaluated. The results shown that the incorporation of 1 % wollastonite into GIC gave ~ 6 % increment in hardness compared to the control GIC (66.53HV ± 7.37 versus 62.66HV ± 2.98) but not for the mine-silica. Thus, wollastonite could be a potential material to be utilized as fillers in dental restorative composite.

Aims: The present study is aimed at taxonomic characterization and isolation of active compound MS01 from Streptomyces sp. FACC-A032 which exhibited strong antitrypanosomal activity (IC50 0.02 μg/mL). Methodology and results: Isolate FACC-A032 was characterized based on its cultural, morphological, physiological and genomic properties. Isolate FACC-A032 was tentatively identified as Streptomyces sp. Biochemical analysis of diaminopimelic acid (DAP) isomer of whole-cell hydrolysates further confirmed the isolate FACC-A032 that contained LL-DAP isomer as species belonging to the genus Streptomyces. The inoculum for submerged cultures of isolate FACCA032 was prepared from cultures on ISP2 agar. After eight days of growth at 28  2 °C and 200 rpm in fermentation medium M3, fermentation broth was extracted with butanol and the crude extracts (solvent layer) were separated and dried in vacuo. Further studies were carried out to isolate the active compound from the culture extracts of isolate FACCA032. Using bioassay-guided isolation, crude extract was partitioned based on different polarity. After which, the resulting elutes were tested for antitrypanosomal activity. The active fraction was analyzed with HPLC-DAD analysis. Based on the analysis, major peak in the active fraction was collected using HPLC preparative. Active compound MS01 was isolated and structure elucidated using NMR spectroscopy. Conclusion, significance and impact of study: Bioassay-guided isolation techniques used in this study had discovered an active antitrypanosomal compound, staurosporine, from Streptomyces sp. FACC-A032. This is the first discovery of staurosporine, a protein kinase inhibitor, from Malaysian soil actinobacteria Streptomyces sp. Therefore, the study demonstrated the potential of Malaysian soil actinobacteria as antitrypanosomal therapeutic agent.

Background: Breastfeeding is recognized as the optimal form of nutrition for the physical and neurological development of infants and is considered the most significant way to prevent child mortality. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of metoclopramide for enhancing milk production in lactating women. Methods: We searched the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and MEDLINE for randomized controlled trials comparing metoclopramide with a placebo, no treatment, or other galactagogue drugs. We included breastfeeding women with term or preterm infants. Results: We retrieved 164 records from our search of the electronic databases and 20 records from other sources. Eight trials involving 342 lactating women that used metoclopramide were included in this review after assessing the eligibility criteria. The meta-analysis of these trials revealed that metoclopramide did not increase the milk volume of the intervention groups compared to that of the control groups. There was a significant increase in the serum concentrations of prolactin when the mothers were administered metoclopramide. No significant adverse events were reported. Conclusion Metoclopramide did not improve milk production in lactating women. Therefore, we do not recommend using metoclopramide to increase milk production in lactating women.

Background: Vitamin D may enhance immune system function and provide a protective effect against infections. Feto-maternal circulation plays an important role in supplying the developing fetus with nutrients and antibodies for its development and health during pregnancy and for its early years of life after birth. This meta-analysis aimed to determine the effectiveness of maternal vitamin D supplementation in preventing respiratory tract infections (RTIs) in children. Methods: We searched the Central and MEDLINE databases and went through all the reference lists in the related articles. We also searched for ongoing trials at http://www.who.int/ictrp/en/ and www.clinicaltrials.gov. Randomized controlled trials comparing vitamin D supplementation with a placebo or no treatment in pregnant women published in the English language up to March 2019 were included. Two reviewers extracted data independently using a predefined protocol and assessed the risk of bias using the Cochrane risk of bias tool, with differences agreed upon by consensus. The predefined primary outcome was the number of offspring who had RTIs. The secondary outcome was the presence of measurable serum immunoglobulin E levels. Results: Three trials involving 3,224 participants (mother–child pairs) met the inclusion criteria and were included in this review. The present analysis reported that maternal supplementation with vitamin D had no effect on RTIs among children (n=1,486 offspring; risk ratio, 0.95; 95% confidence interval, 0.82–1.11; random effects; I2 statistics, 0%). Conclusion Maternal vitamin D supplementation had no effect on RTIs in children. Therefore, consideration of other prevention methods in this regard is recommended.

Objective To investigate the presence of trichomoniasis among women attending the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Clinic, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre. Methods A total of 139 high vaginal swabs were taken from the subjects and sent to the laboratory in Amies gel transport media. The specimens were examined for the presence of Trichomonas vaginalis using wet mount, Giemsa staining and cultured in Diamond's medium. Sociodemographic characteristics and gynaecological complaints were obtained in private using structured questionnaire applied by one investigator. Results The median age was 32 years, with an interquartile interval of 9.96. Most of the subjects were Malays (76.9%) and the remaining were Chinese (15.1%), Indians (2.2%) and other ethnic groups (5.8%). One hundred and thirty eight (99.3%) of the women were married and 98.6% had less than 6 children. More than half (75.5%) of the women's last child birth was less than 6 years ago. Forty seven percent of them were involved in supporting administrative work and 64.7% of the women gave a history of previous or current vaginal discharge. Conclusions The present study reported zero incidence rate of trichomoniasis. The low incidence rate was postulated due to all women who participated in this study were categorized into a low-risk group.
