1.Investigation on musculo-skeletal disorders in tea-workers

The results of the cross-sectional study on musculo-skeletal disorders in 125 tea-workers showed that the percentage of musculo-skeletal complaints was very high (98.4%). The most common parts affected by pain were: low back (90.4%), shoulders (55.2 - 57.6%), knees (53.6 - 56.0%), hands (45.6 - 48.0%), and wrists (31.2 - 34.4%). High frequency of operation, poor postures in some jobs as well as long working time influenced on musculo-skeletal disorders. The relation between seriousness of the disorders and the level of musculo-skeletal complaints was remarkable. Some recommendations were suggested aiming at reducing the adverse effects of occupational factors

An inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is relatively rare quasineoplastic lesion. An IMT usually presents as a single mass within a single organ or sometimes as multifocal lesions within a single anatomic region. An IMT involving noncontiguous multi-organs within different anatomic regions is extremely rare. We present a case of an aggressive IMT that involved the musculoskeletal system and multiple abdominal visceral organs.

3.Whistling Face Syndrome 5 Cases Report in 3 Generation

The “whistling face” syndrome is a dominantly inherited disorder involving the face and musculoskeletal system. Sjnce its first description in 1938 by Freeman and Sheldon, sporadic case reports have appeared in the literature under various syndromes, cranio-carpo-tarsal dystrophy, cranio-facio-corporal syndrome, cranio-carpo-tarsal dysplasia, whistling face-Windmill Vane Hand syndrome and the chirocheilo-podalic syndrome. This report reviews the clinical manifestation of 5 cases of whistling face syndrome in 3 generation in one family.

4.Concept Analysis: Deconditioning.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to explore the concept of deconditioning within the field of nursing allied health sciences. METHOD: The concept analysis method described by Walker and Avant(1995) was used. Critical attributes, antecedents, consequences, and empirical referents were identified. Also model, borderline, contrary and related cases were proposed. RESULTS: The definition of concept 'deconditioning' was a decrease in the function of general system that occured after long periods of immobility and might be marked by frail upon return to normal conditions. The attributes of deconditioning were as follows; 1) the deconditioning was caused by lengthening of physical inactivity; 2) the deconditioning state was resulted by respiratory system, cardiovascular system, musculoskeletal system, hematologic system and generalized manifestation; 3) the deconditioning state could be reconditioned. 4) The reinforced functions by exercise could be compromised by physical inactivity. CONCLUSION: Deconditioning is important concept in nursing practice since it occurs commonly in any patients who lack physical activity for long time and affects many aspects of clinical outcomes, but it could be reversible by nurses' efforts.

5.Dynamic Ultrasonography in Musculoskeletal System: Upper Extremity.

With technical advances, ultrasonography of musculoskeletal system has been an important imaging modality in variable disorders and has been popular. Real-time imaging and possible dynamic motion study are special advantages of ultrasonography, and particularly helpful in evaluation of tendon or ligament injury. The purpose of this article is to review the basic technique and disorders that dynamic ultrasonography is helpful or essential in diagnosis in upper extremity.

6.Understanding Experiences of Young Adult Males with Below-Knee Amputation

PURPOSE: This study was done to explore the experiences of young adult males with below-knee amputation at surgical wards and clinics in Teaching Hospital, Kurunegala, Sri Lanka.
DESIGN: The study used the phenomenology design of qualitative research.
METHODS: Face-to-face interviews were conducted for data collection using a theme list with a saturation point reached at 16 participants. The duration of an interview was 30-45 minutes and was recorded on audiotape and transcribed later. Phases of familiarization with the data, coding, searching for themes, reviewing themes, defining and naming themes, and writing up were conducted accordingly to thematic analysis.
FINDINGS: The young adult male below-knee amputees showed changes in lifestyle with dependence on others, supporting aids, and experiencing discomfort. They showed mental distress with dissatisfaction with life and suffering of life. Additionally, they lacked power with identity changes and encounter economic problems in their lives.
CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS: It is essential to give special education to the staff caring for the below-knee amputees to minimize their unpleasant and challenging experiences. Health staff can motivate family members and friends for individuals' mental adjustment to their new life. Additionally, the social attitude of the community should be changed positively regarding amputated patients.

7.The Investigeation of the Influneces of Ocular Symptoms on Environmetal Factors of VDT Workers.

VDT syndrome is the disease entity that affects many workers on the various visual function as well as on some general health conditions including neurologic, circulatory and musculoskeletal system and it tends to increase day by day. We performed a series of investigation to evaluate the influences of VDT work on the subjective symptoms by means of questionnaire application with the control of non-VDT workers. It revealed that the susceptibility in occurrence of impairment of ocular functions like asthenopia as well as the disturbances of musculoskeletal circulatory, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems were more pronounced in the VDT workers' group than the control group, and the environmental factors like working hours, air pollution, and noise also contributed for the worsening of the ocular and systemic symptoms. It is suggested that the improvement of operating environment by the implementation of comprehensive epidemiological study in association with the improvemental task of working situations and working times in long term advocated would decrease the VDT syndrome among VDT workers.

8.Health Status by Cornell Medical Index of Working Students of High School Attached to Industry.

The result of the close analysis of the health status of 549 working students (the experimental group) of a high school attached to an industry and that of 1,259 non-working students (control group) based on the question provided by CMI from 1st, June to 31st, July 1984 has been revealed as follows: 1. In contrast with the control group, the experimental one is statistically noticeably higher (p<0.01) in their average complaints both in terms of the whole items(A-R) and the physical items(A-L). 2. In the experimental group, particularly the item(L) for habits has the highest rate of average complaints, followed by the item(B) for the respiratory system and the item(E) for the musculoskeletal system. 3. The average complaints of the individual class in both the experimental group and the control group have the tendency to be on the increase accordingly as the school year goes up, and the increasing rate of the experimental group has turned out to be higher than that of the control group. 4. The average complaints of the experimental group based on residential types are the highest(34.7%) in the case of cooking food for oneself, followed by a dormitory(30.3%), and one's own house(28.5%). 5. The average complaints based on the individual working place has been found out to be higher than the rest in the item of the miscellaneous disease of the blowing and roving parts, the respiratory system of the carding part, the fatigability of the spinning part, the tension of inspecting part.

9.Stochastic Resonance Whole-Body Vibration, Musculoskeletal Symptoms, and Body Balance: A Worksite Training Study.

BACKGROUND: Stochastic resonance whole-body vibration training (SR-WBV) was tested to reduce work-related musculoskeletal complaints. METHODS: Participants were 54 white-collar employees of a Swiss organization. The controlled crossover design comprised two groups each given 4 weeks of exercise and no training during a second 4-week period. Outcome was daily musculoskeletal well-being, musculoskeletal pain, and surefootedness. In addition, participants performed a behavioral test on body balance prior to when SR-WBV started and after 4 weeks of SR-WBV. RESULTS: Across the 4-week training period, musculoskeletal well-being and surefootedness were significantly increased (p < 0.05), whereas musculoskeletal pain was significantly reduced only in those who reported low back pain during the last 4 weeks prior to the study (p < 0.05). Body balance was significantly increased by SR-WBV (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: SR-WBV seems to be an efficient option in primary prevention of musculoskeletal complaints and falls at work.

10.Human Body Mechanics of Pushing and Pulling: Analyzing the Factors of Task-related Strain on the Musculoskeletal System.

The purpose of this review is to name and describe the important factors of musculoskeletal strain originating from pushing and pulling tasks such as cart handling that are commonly found in industrial contexts. A literature database search was performed using the research platform Web of Science. For a study to be included in this review differences in measured or calculated strain had to be investigated with regard to: (1) cart weight/ load; (2) handle position and design; (3) exerted forces; (4) handling task (push and pull); or (5) task experience. Thirteen studies met the inclusion criteria and proved to be of adequate methodological quality by the standards of the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research. External load or cart weight proved to be the most influential factor of strain. The ideal handle positions ranged from hip to shoulder height and were dependent on the strain factor that was focused on as well as the handling task. Furthermore, task experience and subsequently handling technique were also key to reducing strain. Workplace settings that regularly involve pushing and pulling should be checked for potential improvements with regards to lower weight of the loaded handling device, handle design, and good practice guidelines to further reduce musculoskeletal disease prevalence.
