Poly (p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV) was synthesized from p-xylylene bis(tetrahydrothiophenium chloride) using the Wessling route and characterized by Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR) and UV-visible (UV-VIS) spectroscopic techniques. The significance of thermal treatment along with evolution of precursor polymer to polymer PPV was also studied through these spectroscopic techniques. Thermally Stimulated Current (TSC) measurements indicated the presence of crystallization, sulphonium group which occurred through the evolution from precursor polymer to polymer PPV during thermal treatment.

2.The Role of Multislice Computed Tomography (MSCT) in the Detection of Blunt Traumatic Intra Abdominal Injury: Our Experience in Hospital Tengku Ampuan Afzan (HTAA),Kuantan, Pahang

Multislice computed tomography (MSCT) is the imaging
modality of choice in assessing clinically stable patients with blunt abdominal trauma. This study assessed the role of MSCT in the detection of intra abdominal injury caused by blunt trauma in our centre within a two-year-period (2008-2009). A total of 151 patients had MSCT abdomen for blunt abdominal trauma within this study period. Positive scan were seen in 126 patients (83.4%). Out of these positive scans, liver, spleen and renal injuries were seen in 42.1% (n=53), 34.9% (n=44) and 30.0% (n=34) of cases respectively.
Laparotomies were performed in 45 patients. Out of these 45
laparotomies, 10 patients had surgically significant injuries that were missed on CT scan findings. The injuries were bowel perforation (n=4), serosal tear of bowel (n=1), mesenteric injuries with active haemorrhage (n=3), spleen injury (n=1) and liver injury (n=1).

4.Determination of malathion levels and the effect of malathion on the growth of Chrysomya megacephala (Fibricius) in malathion-exposed rat carcass.

This study was conducted to examine the effect of malathion on the development of Chrysomya megacephala. A total of 12 adult Sprague-Dawley rats was divided into 4 groups. Each animal in the 4 groups was given orally 0 (control), 10, 25 and 50ml/kg body weight of malathion, respectively. Chrysomya megacephala larvae were then allowed to grow on the liver of carcass. Larvae development was estimated by means of weight and length, time of adult emergence and survival rate. Results indicated that for the first 6 to 30 hours, larvae from control group developed more rapidly than larvae feeding on tissue containing malathion. However, the 3 doses of malathion did not exhibit significant impact on larvae length and weight. The time required for adult emergence was significantly greater for malathion-treated colony which was 10 days compared to 7 days in control colony. Control larvae of C. megacephala had higher survival rate compared to larvae exposed to the three different doses of malathion. Analysis of the tissues indicated that all rats and fly samples were positive for malathion. Malathion concentration was highest in liver. It was concluded that the presence of malathion altered the development rate of C. megacephala and thus disrupted normal postmortem interval estimation.

5.Sporotrichosis atypical presentation as a soft tissue tumour.

Sporotrichosis is a mycosis caused by a saprophytic dimorphic fungus named Sporothrix schenckii. Infections occur following traumatic inoculation of fungus from plants and infected cat bites and scratches. We report a case of a farmer who presented with a solitary subcutaneous nodule initially diagnosed as a soft tissue tumour. A history of agricultural activity and feline contact should draw the clinician's attention to sporotrichosis, as the diagnosis can be easily missed in atypical cases. The diagnosis, microbiology and management of the case are discussed.

6.Self-efficacy of foot care behaviour of elderly patients with diabetes

Introduction: Elderly patients with diabetes are at a high risk of contracting diabetic foot problems.
Self-efficacy is essential to help improve foot care behaviour.
Aim: To identify levels of self-efficacy and foot care behaviour and their relationship with demographic
characteristics in elderly patients with diabetes
Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in two general hospitals in Malaysia from May to
June 2015. Diabetes patients aged 60 years with specific inclusion criteria were invited to participate
in this study. The respondents were interviewed using a set of validated questionnaires. Data were
analysed with descriptive and inferential statistics (multiple linear regression) using Statistical Package
for the Social Sciences version 20.0.
Results: Levels of foot self-efficacy (mean+31.39; standard deviation=7.76) and foot care behaviour
(mean=25.37; SD=5.88) were high. There was a positive significant relationship between foot selfefficacy
(β = 0.41, p < 0.001) and gender (β = 0.30, p < 0.001) with foot care behaviour.
Conclusion: Self-efficacy can be incorporated in diabetes education to improve foot care behaviour.
High-risk patients should be taught proper foot inspection and protection as well as the merits of skin
care to prevent the occurrence of diabetic foot problems.

Liquid chromatography tandem mass chromatography (LC-MS/MS) is an important hyphenated technique for quantitative analysis of drugs in biological fluids. Because of high sensitivity and selectivity, LC-MS/MS has been used for pharmacokinetic studies, metabolites identification in the plasma and urine. This manuscript gives comprehensive analytical review, focusing on chromatographic separation approaches (column packing materials, column length and mobile phase) as well as different acquisition modes (SIM, MRM) for quantitative analysis of glucocorticoids and stimulants. This review is not meant to be exhaustive but rather to provide a general overview for detection and confirmation of target drugs using LC-MS/MS and thus useful in the doping analysis, toxicological studies as well as in pharmaceutical analysis.
8.Arthroscopic Mumford Procedure Utilizing the Anteromedial and Neviaser Portals – A Pilot Cadaveric Study on Neurovascular Structures at Risk

Introduction: Degenerative disorder involving the acromioclavicular
joint (ACJ) is quite common especially in the elderly.
One of the surgical modalities of treatment of this disorder is the
Mumford Procedure. Arthroscopic approach is preferred due to
its reduced morbidity and faster post-operative recovery. One
method utilizes the anteromedial and Neviaser portals, which
allow direct and better visualization of the ACJ from the
subacromial space. However, the dangers that may arise from
incision and insertion of instruments through these portals are
not fully understood. This cadaveric study was carried out to
investigate the dangers that can arise from utilization of these
portals and which structures are at risk during this procedure.
Materials and Methods: Arthroscopic Mumford procedures
were performed on 5 cadaver shoulders by a single surgeon
utilizing the anteromedial and Neviaser portals. After marking
each portals with methylene blue, dissection of nearby structures
were carried out immediately after each procedure was
completed. Important structures (subclavian artery as well as
brachial plexus and its branches) were identified and the nearest
measurements were made from each portal edges to these
structures. Results: The anteromedial portal was noted to be
closest to the suprascapular nerve (SSN) at 2.91 cm, while the
Neviaser portal was noted to be closest also to the SSN at 1.60
cm. The suprascapular nerve was the structure most at risk
during the Mumford procedure. The anteromedial portal was
noted to be the most risky portal to utilize compared to the
Neviaser portal. Conclusion: Extra precaution needs to be given
to the anteromedial portal while performing an arthroscopic
distal clavicle resection in view of the risk of injuring the
suprascapular nerve of the affected limb.

9.Genotoxicity assessment of locally produced dental nanocomposite using Comet assay

The aim of this study was to determine the
genotoxicity of a locally produced nanocomposite by Universiti
Sains Malaysia, Malaysia using Comet assay. Stem cells from
human exfoliated deciduous teeth (SHED) were treated with
the nanocomposite at five different concentrations (0.006,
0.0125, 0.025, 0.05, and 0.1 mg/ml) along with concurrent
negative (medium alone) and positive control (zinc sulfate
heptahydrate) and incubated at 37°C for 24 hours in an
incubator at 5% CO2. The tail moment was used to assess the
extent of DNA damage. The tail moment for the group of SHED
treated with nanocomposite (for all the five different
concentrations) was not statistically significant as compared to
the negative control, suggesting that the locally produced
dental nanocomposite did not induce any DNA damage.
Hence, it can be concluded that the locally produced
nanocomposite is non-genotoxic on stem cells from human
exfoliated deciduous teeth.
10.Boarding School: A Simple Approach To Reduce Soil Transmitted Helminth Infections In Orang Asli Children Of Sungai Siput, Perak, 2017

Soil transmitted helminth (STH) infection is a major public health concern among the indigenous children of Malaysia. Precarious living conditions at home including unavailability of water, drinking of contaminated water, poor sanitation and livestock presence, are known risk factors for the infection. In order to provide better living conditions, these children are enrolled in boarding schools. This study was conducted to determine whether boarding schools is a solution in reducing soil transmitted helminth infection among Orang Asli children in Sg Siput, Perak, Malaysia. An analytical cross-sectional study was conducted among 204 schoolchildren aged 7-17 years from three boarding schools in Sungai Siput, Perak from January to March 2017. Stool samples were collected and examined using direct smear and Kato-Katz technique. Information on sociodemographic and environmental conditions were collected using a modified Demographic Health Survey (DHS) questionnaire. Data analysis was done using IBM SPSS Statistics Processor 20.0.Out of a total of 204 children, only 48% (n= 97) were infected with at least one type of STH species which showed a reduced prevalence as compared to previous studies conducted among home dwelling schoolchildren with overall prevalence of 78-97%. Majority of the children had monoparasitism (31%; n=63) with moderate intensity by T trichuira (n=51, 25%). Univariate analysis shows that unavailability of water at home has a statistically significant association with STH infection among boarding school children (OR=0.73; 95% CI= 0.56-0.95 p=0.021). Multivariate analysis proves children who had unavailability of water at home has 2.1 times more likelihood of getting an STH infection (OR= 2.08; 95%CI= 1.07-4.07; p= 0.032).This study demonstrates a reduced STH prevalence among Orang Asli boarding school children as better living condition there limits the spread of STH infection among them.
