Objective To summarize ultrasonographic manifestations of distal esophageal carcinoma compared with surgical and pathological findings, and investigate the diagnostic role of transabdominal ultrasound in evaluation of invasion depth of distal esophageal carcinoma. Methods Criteria on invasion depth of distal esophageal carcinoma by transabdominal ultrasound were as follows: intramural hypoechoic tumor with continuous smooth hyperechoic line of adventitia and free movement of esophagus with breath were considered as S1;incontinuous or interrupted hyperechoic line of adventitia and relatively poor movement of esophagus with breath were considered as S2;unclear boundaries of tumor with adjacent structures and poor or no relative movement with breath,S3. S1,S2,S3 referred to those without or with adventitia invasion or invasion to adjacent structures, respectively. Eighty-nine esophageal carcinoma and esophageal-cardiac junction carcinoma were enrolled in our study and retrospectively studied compared with surgical and pathological findings. Results For tumors of S1,S2,S3,the thickness of the esophageal wall were 0.4 - 4.3 cm, 0.5 - 2.1 cm, 0.9 - 3.2 cm,respectively. Thickness of the esophageal wall was significantly related with invasion depth ( P

This study evaluated the cytotoxicity of a new type silicone rubber for maxillofacial prosthesis, which was developed by the present authors. According to the GB/T16886. 5- 2003, the samples were prepared and tested with cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) assay, the relative growth rate (RGR) was calculated, and morphology of L929 cells were observed by scanning electron microscope and phase contrast microscope. The results showed that RGR of L929 cells were 91.65% (24 h), 87.03% (48 h), 87.30% (72 h), respectively, and the level of cytotoxicity was grade 1. The L929 cells showed typical fusiform shape and their morphology did not changed significantly after 24 h, 48 h and 72 h. These data indicated that the newly-developed silicone rubber material, as a maxillofacial prosthesis material, should be a safe biomaterial.

OBJECTIVEThe biological safety of a new developed silicone rubber for inflatable silastic prosthesis (SRISP) was evaluated.
METHODSFollowing the GB/T 16886.10-2005 standard, YY/T 0127.13-2009 standard, and GB/T 16886.11- 2011 standard, samples were prepared and tested by animal experiments, such as guinea pig maximization test, oral mucous membrane irritation test, and short-term systemic toxicity test (oral route).
RESULTSNo obvious erythema and edema in the guinea pig abdominal skin were observed after 24, 48, and 72 h of stimulating touch, thus indicating that SRISP does not cause potential skin sensitivity. No local response to SRISP was found, and the visual observation and pathological findings of oral mucosa were normal and similar to that of the control group. Therefore, SRISP had no irritation response to oral mucosa. No clinical signs of toxicity were observed in rats, and no significant differences in weight and weight relative growth rate between extract group and blank control group (P > 0.05) were found. Thus, SRISP had no short-term systemic toxicity.
CONCLUSIONThese results indicated that SRISP met the requirement of biomedical materials and had good bio- security.

Objective To explore the expressions and correlation of RWD containing sumoylation enhancer (RSUME),small ubiquitin-like modifier (SUMO-1),hypoxia inducible factor-1α(HIF-1α)and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)in gliomas of different pathologic grade. Methods We investigated the expression levels of RSUME mRNA,HIF-1α mRNA and VEGF mRNA with reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR),and investigated the immunohistochemical staining to determine the expressions of SUMO-1,HIF-1α and VEGF in 63 cases of human gliomas of different pathologic grade and 9 cases of normal brain tissues. We studied its correlation with the pathologic grade and the relationship between the expression of RSUME promoter sumoylation and HIF-1α/VEGF pathway in gliomas. Results There were significant differences (P <0.01)in the expressions of RSUME mRNA,HIF-1αmRNA and VEGF mRNA in glioma tissues. With the increasing degree of pathologic grade in tumor specimens, the expression levels of RSUME mRNA,HIF-1α mRNA and VEGF mRNA increased markedly (P <0.01 ).There was a positive correlation of the expression levels of RSUME mRNA with HIF-1αmRNA and VEGF mRNA.There were significant differences (P <0.01 )in the expressions of SUMO-1,HIF-1αand VEGF in glioma tissues by immunohistochemical staining. With the ascending of pathologic grade of tumor specimens, the expression levels of SUMO-1,HIF-1α and VEGF increased markedly (P < 0.01 ).There was a positive correlation between the expression level of SUMO-1 and HIF-1α(r =0.857,P <0.01).The Kaplan-Meier analysis and Log-rank test showed significant differences in progress free survival (PFS)between the RSUME high-expression and low-expression groups (χ2 =36.032,P <0.01).Conclusion RSUME may enhance HIF-1α/VEGF pathway through sumoylation in gliomas. It implicates that RSUME is related to angiogenesis in gliomas and can promote tumor invasion and progression, indicating that RSUME can be a novel target in gliomas treatment.

Objective To investigate clinical and pathological features of pseudoepitheliomatous keratotic and micaceous balanitis (PKMB).Methods The clinical and pathological features as well as treatment of PKMB were retrospectively analyzed in 5 male patients collected from Janumy 2008 to December 2013.Results The age at onset of PKMB varied from 56 to 67 years in these 5 patients, and none of the patients had received prepucectomy.Indurated keratotic plaques were observed in the glans of penis and inner lamina of the prepuce with no tenderness on palpation, whose surfaces were covered with grayish yellow, adherent and hard micaceous crusts.Histopathological study revealed obvious hyperkeratosis complicated by parakeratosis, epidermal pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia, thickened spinous layer, and normal cell polarity in the epidermis,as well as telangiectasis and mild to moderate lymphocytic infiltration in the upper dermis.Immunohistochemical examination showed positive nuclear staining of epidermal cells for human papillomavirus (HPV) in 2 cases. Two patients took small doses of prednisone, but achieved no obvious improvement.Oral isotretinoin had resulted in a favorable outcome in another two cases, but relapse occurred after dose reduction, and thick crusts still appeared after topical application of glucocorticoid cream and tacrolimus cream,or carbon dioxide laser treatment and photodynamic therapy. Conclusions PKMB is a chronic and obstinate disease, and should be diagnosed based on pathological findings. Its treatment is difficult, and tretinoin has some effects, but relapse often occurs after drug withdrawal and maintenance treatment is needed.
