Journal of Integrative Medicine 2003;1(1):74-6
According to TCM theory of the wholistic concept and the principles of syndrome differentiation and treatment, the characteristics of the pathogenesis of aplastic anemia (AA) were summarized and corresponding treatment was put forward on the basis of clinical observation and the study of literature. In the pathogenesis of AA, the deficiency of spleen and kidney is the primary aspect, fire attacking blood vessels is the secondary aspect and there is change because of blood stasis. In treatment, the method of invigorating spleen and tonifying kidney is adopted in order to get at the root, and releasing fire to stop bleeding is adopted in order to bring about a temporary solution, and activating blood circulation to dissipate blood stasis is adopted in order to produce blood. The outline should be caught hold of that consumption is primary aspect and fire is secondary aspect and there is change because of blood stasis in order to obtain satisfactory curative effect.

OBJECTIVE: Adopting methods of cell culture to explore the effects and mechanisms of Jianpi Bushen Huoxue Prescription (JPBSHXP), a traditional Chinese compound herbal medicine for strengthening spleen, reinforcing kidney and activating blood circulation, in inhibiting hematopoietic cells apoptosis in a mouse model of aplastic anemia (AA). METHODS: Blood serum of AA mice was made from an AA mouse model. Blood serums containing different traditional Chinese compound herbal medicine were made from rats after intragastric administration of JPBSHXP and its related decoctions, respectively. Bone marrow cells of normal mice were incubated by these blood serums for 24 hours, respectively. The apoptosis of the bone marrow cells were assayed by flow cytometry and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). RESULTS: It was indicated that the bone marrow cells of normal mice incubated with blood serum of AA mice displayed typical apoptosis. The apoptosis rates of bone marrow cells of the AA mice incubated by blood serum containing different traditional Chinese herbal medicine were decreased. The effect of Bushen (reinforcing kidey) Recipe was better than Jianpi (strengthening spleen) Recipe and Huoxue (activating blood circulation) Recipe, while the effect of JPBSHXP was the best. TEM results showed that the effect of Bushen Recipe was better than that of the Jianpi Recipe and the Huoxue Recipe, while the effect of JPBSHXP was the best. CONCLUSION: JPBSHXP and its related decoctions can significantly decrease the apoptosis rate of bone marrow mononuclear cells of the AA mice. It is inferred that JPBSHXP can promote bone marrow hematogenesis.

Objective To investigate the clinical efficacy of dog days' acupoint application in treating allergic rhinitis and assess its safety. Methods Two hundred and forty-nine patients were randomly allocated to a dog days' acupoint application group of 166 cases and a placebo group of 83 cases. The two groups were received treatment at the first day of the first, second and last periods of the hot season The dog days' acupoint application group received acupoint application of Chinese herbal medicine and the placebo group, acupoint application of non-medicinal placebo. In the two groups, the symptoms and signs were scored and the VAS score was recorded before and after treatment and during the follow-up period, and adverse reactions and relapses were observed and the clinical therapeutic effect of acupoint application and its safety were assessed after treatment and during the follow-up period. Results The total efficacy rate was 69.8% in the dog days' acupoint application group and 44.4% in the placebo group. The therapeutic effect was significantly better in the dog days' acupoint application group than in the placebo group (P<0.01). The totalefficacy rate was 89.4% at the 6-month follow-up and 90.7% at the 12-month follow-up in the dog days' acupoint application group and 4.9% and 1.2% in the placebo group. The long-term therapeutic effect was significantly better in the dog days' acupoint application group than in the placebo group (P<0.01). In the dog days' acupoint application group, the symptom score, the sign score and the VAS score were significantly lower after treatment and during the follow-up period than before treatment (bothP<0.01). In the placebo group, those scores only had significant pre-/post-treatment differences (P<0.01). There were statistically significant differences in the symptom score, the sign score and the VAS score between the two groups at different times. The adverse reaction rate was 4.3% in the dog days' acupoint application group and 2.5% in the placebo group; there was no statistically significant difference between the two groups (P>0.05). The relapse rate was 46,6% at the 6-month follow-up and 62.1% at the 12-month follow-up in the dog days' acupoint application group and 85.2% and 95.1% in the placebo group; there were statistically significant differences between the two groups (P<0.01).Conclusions Dog days' acupoint application has better short-term and long-term therapeutic effect on allergic rhinitis with a low relapse rate and high safety.

AIM: To investigate whether transferrin rec ep tor (TfR) and Fc ?/? R are the major IgA 1 receptor on human mesangial cells (HMC). METHODS: Serum IgA 1 was isolated by jacalin affinity chromatog raphy and heated to aggregated form (aIgA 1). RT-PCR was performed to investiga te the expression of TfR mRNA and Fc?/?R mRNA. Binding capacity of aIgA 1 to human mesangial cell line (HMCL) was evaluated by radio-ligand binding assay. Bi nding specificity was determined by competitive inhibition assay and phosphoryla tion of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) was determined by Western bl ot. RESULTS: TfR cDNA and Fc?/?R cDNA products were amplified from HMC but not from HMCL. aIgA 1 was found to bind to HMCL in a dose-dependent, s aturable manner and the binding was inhibited by BSA. Scatchard analysis reveale d a Kd of (6.4?1.7)?10 -7 mol/L and the binding sites were (3.0?1.2) ?106/cells. Both aIgA 1 from patients with IgAN and healthy controls were ab le to induce the phosphorylation of ERK in a similar time-dependent manner, but the effect of aIgA 1 from patients with IgAN was much stronger (P

Objective:Dysmenorrhea is the common gynecological problem among adolescent girls and women of reproductive age. This study aim to develop a dysmenorrhea Quality of Life (QoL) scale based on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theory. Methods:We conducted focus group discussions and in-depth interviews with TCM gynecologists and patients, and adapted items from previously published scales. We generated an initial pool of 41 items with 8 domains. Delphi method was used to item preliminary selection. Then, we administered the items to a sample of adolescent girls ( n=200), and the distribution of survey items, discrete trend, factor analysis, correlation coefficient, Cronbach’s α coefficient were used to select items. Results:After two rounds of Delphi, a total of thirty items were included in the dysmenorrhea QoL scale. The expert positive coefficient were 100% and 83.3% with high motivation. The authoritative coefficient were greater than 0.7, the results showing authoritative and reliable. The Kendall’s coefficient of concordance W was 0.333 ( χ2=128.271, P<0.001). In sample analysis, the items were deleted when they met more than two standards. The final scale retained 20 items, covering 8 dimensions. Conclusions:The methods for selection of dysmenorrhea QoL scale based on TCM theory were preferable. Given the paucity of research in this area, this new dysmenorrhea QoL scale may provide opportunities for the patient-reported outcome (PRO) evaluation in the field of TCM.
