2.A cold/heat property classification strategy based on bio-effects of herbal medicines.
China Journal of Chinese Materia Medica 2014;39(11):2149-2152
The property theory of Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) is regarded as the core and basic of Chinese medical theory, however, the underlying mechanism of the properties in CHMs remains unclear, which impedes a barrier for the modernization of Chinese herbal medicine. The properties of CHM are often categorized into cold and heat according to the theory of Chinese medicine, which are essential to guide the clinical application of CHMs. There is an urgent demand to build a cold/heat property classification model to facilitate the property theory of Chinese herbal medicine, as well as to clarify the controversial properties of some herbs. Based on previous studies on the cold/heat properties of CHM, in this paper, we described a novel strategy on building a cold/heat property classification model based on herbal bio-effect. The interdisciplinary cooperation of systems biology, pharmacological network, and pattern recognition technique might lighten the study on cold/heat property theory, provide a scientific model for determination the cold/heat property of herbal medicines, and a new strategy for expanding the Chinese herbal medicine resources as well.

Chinese Journal of Tissue Engineering Research 2016;20(24):3516-3522
BACKGROUND:Morinda has been reported to promote the proliferation, the secretion of alkaline phosphatase and osteocalcin, and mRNA expression of transforming growth factor of osteoblasts. However, little information is available addressing the effects of Morinda on receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB expression in osteoclasts in rats with osteoporosis. OBJECTIVE:To study the effects of Morinda on receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB expression in osteoclastsofosteoporosis rats. METHODS:Thirty Sprague-Dawley rats were equaly and randomly divided into Morinda and 17β-estradiol groups. Rat models of osteoporosis were established by bilateral ovariectomy, and then 5 mL of Morinda decocta(1.0mmol/L)and 17β-estradiol (1×10-6mmol/L) were administered intragastricaly to rats in Morinda and 17β-estradiol groups for 3 consecutive months, respectively. Primary osteoclasts were isolated from rats in both groups, andthen cultured for 3, 6 and 9 days folowed by TRAP staining andcelcounting. Bone mineral density of the proximal and distal femur, urine and serum levels of Ca2+and progesterone, and receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB expression in osteoclasts ofrats in both groups were determined. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:Osteoclast fusion was reduced in Morinda group. In contrast, number of osteoclastswas increased andcels becamemore maturein the17β-estradiol group. Bone mineral density of the proximal and distal femur bilateraly, urine and serum levels of Ca2+and progesterone were significantly increased, while receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB expression was significantly decreased in osteoclasts in Morinda group compared with 17β-estradiol group (P< 0.05). These results indicate that Morinda reduces receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB expression in osteoclasts in osteoporosis rats, thereby inhibiting the development and progression of osteoporosis.

Objective To observe the effect of Modified Zhenxuan Granules (MZG) on blood pressure, synthesis and bioavail-ability of nitric oxide (NO), and plasma angiotensin I1 (Ang II) contents of spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). Methods Fiftymale SHR were randomly assigned to 5 groups: high-, middle-and low-dose MZG groups(at the doses of 37.50, 18. 70,and 9. 35 g/kg respectively), captopril (25 mg/kg) group and SHR control group. The rats received gastric gavage of corre-sponding medicine according to the experimental design for 12 weeks. Blood pressure from the tail was recorded at the beginning oftreatment and every 4 weeks during 12-weeks treatment. At the end of the experiment, the plasma NO and Ang II concentration, and aortal nitric oxide synthase (NOS) activity and aortal cyclic guanylic acid (cGMP) concentration were measured. ResultsMZG could decrease blood pressure and plasma Ang I1 concentration, increase plasma NO content, and enhance aortal NOS activ-ity and cGMP concentration ofSHR (P <0. 05, compared with the SHR control group), and high-dose MZG had the best effect. After treatment for 12 weeks, high-dose MZG had a similar effect on decreasing blood pressure compared with captoril group, had a better effect on increasing aortal cGMP (P< 0. 05), and increased the bioavailability of NO. Conclusion MZG can de-crease blood pressure, and its mechanism may be related to the improvement of NO/NOS/eGMP system and the decrease of plas-ma Ang Ⅱ concentration in SHR.
