Objective To explore the damage of intestinal mucosal barrier caused by vinegar retention enema, and compare the degree of injury in intestinal mucosal barrier between isotonic vinegar and traditional hypertonic vinegar treat-ment. Methods Sixteen adult rabbits were randomly divided into two groups. The solution of vinegar mixed with normal so-dium was given to hypertonic group. Isotonic group was administered with isosmotic solution made of vinegar and double dis-tilled water, with the same volume fraction and pH as hypertonic group. Then two different osmosis solutions were given as enema solution to rabbits under the same condition. Finally, damages of intestinal mucosa were observed by light microscope and transmission electron microscope (TEM) in two groups. Results It was observed that injuries of rectum and distal part of colon were more severe in hypertonic group than those of isotonic group through light microscope. Besides, cell structures were morphologically normal, with in-line microvilli and intact tight junction in isotonic group. In hypertonic group, microvil-li of intestinal cells decreased or disappeared, the cell junction is widened, and cell apoptosis and necrosis were found through TEM. Conclusion Results showed that isotonic vinegar had less damage to mucosa. Consequently, isotonic vinegar can be considered as enema solution for hepatic encephalopathy to avoid damage by osmosis in clinic.

OBJECTIVETo assess the value of karyotype analysis and fluorescence in situ hybridization(FISH) assay for the diagnosis of myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS).
METHODSThe karyotypes of 122 initially treated MDS patients were analyzed with conventional R-banding and FISH using probes including GLP CSF1R/D5S23, D5S721, GLP EGR1/D5S23, D5S721, GLP D7S486/CSP7, GLP D7S522/CSP7, GLP D20S108, CSP8 and CSP X/Y.
RESULTSThe detection rate of chromosomal abnormalities was 54.9% for the 122 patients. Among these, those involving 3 or more chromosomes are most common (16.4%), followed by +8(14.8%), -7/7q-(7.4%), -5/5q-(5.7%), 20q-(2.5%), and -Y in male patients (5.0%). Two MDS-RAEB II patients detected with t(8;21) should be diagnosed with acute myelocytic leukemia. FISH analysis showed that 54 patients were positive (44.3%). Among these, 30.3% had CSP8 amplification, followed by GLP D7S486/CSP7 and GLP D7S522/CSP7 deletion (12.3%), GLP CSF1R/D5S23, D5S721 and GLP EGR1/D5S23, D5S721 deletion (9.8%), GLP D20S108 deletion (7.4%), and CSPX/Y deletion (5%).
CONCLUSIONWith a detection rate of 54.9%, R-banding still constitutes the basic examination for MDS. As detection of interstitial chromosomal abnormalities in MDS can be greatly enhanced by FISH, combined karyotype analysis and FISH can improve the diagnosis of MDS and facilitate assessment of its prognosis.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Functional dyspepsia (FD) remains a great clinical challenge since the FD subtypes, defined by Rome III classification, still have heterogeneous pathogenesis. Previous studies have shown notable differences in visceral sensation processing in the CNS in FD compared to healthy subjects (HS). However, the role of CNS in the pathogenesis of each FD subtype has not been recognized. METHODS: Twenty-eight FD patients, including 10 epigastric pain syndrome (EPS), 9 postprandial distress syndrome (PDS), and 9 mixed-type, and 10 HS, were enrolled. All subjects underwent a proximal gastric perfusion water load test and the regional brain activities during resting state and water load test were investigated by functional magnetic resonance imaging. RESULTS: For regional brain activities during the resting state and water load test, each FD subtype was significantly different from HS (P < 0.05). Focusing on EPS and PDS, the regional brain activities of EPS were stronger than PDS in the left paracentral lobule, right inferior frontal gyrus pars opercularis, postcentral gyrus, precuneus, insula, parahippocampal gyrus, caudate nucleus, and bilateral cingulate cortices at the resting state (P < 0.05), and stronger than PDS in the left inferior temporal and fusiform gyri during the water load test (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Compared to HS, FD subtypes had different regional brain activities at rest and during water load test, whereby the differences displayed distinct manifestations for each subtype. Compared to PDS, EPS presented more significant differences from HS at rest, suggesting that the abnormality of central visceral pain processing could be one of the main pathogenesis mechanisms for EPS.
