1.A review for a traditional Chinese medical journal Shou Shi Yi Bao.
Journal of Integrative Medicine 2009;7(6):569-74
Shou Shi Yi Bao was a journal of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) during the period from 1935 to 1937, and was originated by Chen Huan-yun, a TCM physician in Suzhou. It is mainly to transmit the knowledge of TCM and to promote the epidemic prevention capacity of local public. The editorial characteristics and historical value of the journal were explored in initial background, staff writers, editorial policies, contents and the Editor Chen's medical ideas. Shou Shi Yi Bao was supported by many famous TCM physicians, although the journal was originated from the civil society. It was an academic TCM journal with perfect practicability for orientating to the public and highlighting the academic spirit. Chen Huan-yun was a resolute defender of TCM, and had many opinions on clinical practice and lots of scientific suggestions on TCM development. Shou Shi Yi Bao reflected the main characteristics of TCM journals in 1930s. The journal was one of the important documents to study the TCM history during the period of the Republic of China in Jiangsu Province, and it also set a stage for the struggle between TCM and Western medicine at that time. The documentary information of the journal has literature and history values in reflecting the historical process of TCM self-improvement. The success of the journal was due to not only the broken-up sectarian bias and cooperation of the TCM practitioners but also the preponderant geographic and cultural circumstances of Suzhou as well as Chen Huan-yun's profound knowledge in traditional Chinese culture and medicine.

Chinese Journal of Diabetes 2005;13(3):163-166
Objective To study the relationship of gestational diabetes mellitus(GDM) and ~family history of diabetes (FHD), clinical characteristics and maternal and infant outcomes of GDM and gestational impaired glucose tolerance (GIGT). Methods A prospective case-control study was performed in 244 women with GDM/ GIGT, including 93 patients with family history of diabetes and 151 without FHD, and 244 normal OGTT cases as control from Feb. 2004 to Aug. 2004 in Dept of OB &GYN of Peking University First Hospital. Univariate analysis was used to estimate the odds ~ratios with 95% CI. Results (1)FHD was a risk factor of GDM/GIGT, OR=2.9.The co-effect of parents DM on transmission was excessive. (2)Maternal≥30 years old with FHD were greater than those without FHD (75.3% vs 62.9%). More intakes of fruits and carbohydrate per day and more weight gain during pregnancy in pregnant women with FHD were lower than those in patients without FHD. (3) The prevalence of GDM was indifferent ~between patients with and without FHD. 50 g OGCT plasma glucose (PG), fasting PG and 3 h PG in 75 g OGTT of patients with FHD were higher than those of patients without FHD. The number of pregnant women treated by insulin was significantly different between patients with and without FHD. (4) No difference was found between family and non-family history of diabetes in the prevalences of pre-eclampsia, FGR, polyhydramnios, preterm labor, LGA and SGA. Conclusions (1) FHD is a risk of GDM/GIGT, and exposure to a diabetic intrauterine environment is a mechanism responsible for this excessive maternal inheritance. (2)~Besides family history of diabetes, more intake of fruits or carbohydrate and larger gain of body weigh during pregnancy may result in GDM/GIGT.

Mesoporous silica SBA-15 with a small organic molecular (1,8-Naphthalimide) was synthesized and used as matrix for MALDI-TOF-MS ( Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time of flight mass spectrometry) analysis. A modified SBA-15 matrix, SBA-15-NA (1,8-Naphthalimide) was synthesized by covalently attaching SBA-15 to an 1 , 8-naphthalimide formed by 1 , 8-naphthalic anhydride and 3-( trimethoxysilyl) propylamine. The mass spectra obtained with SBA-15-NA exhibited less background interference ions, higher desorption/ionization efficiency, and higher peak intensity. The matrix was initially prepared in methanol and mixed with analyte at a 1∶1 volume ratio in vial. The solution of mixture was at a 10∶1 concentration ratio of matrix/analyte on a stainless steel target and allowed to air dry. The method was used to analyze various types of low molecular weight ( less than 500 ) chemical compounds such as monosaccharides, amino acids, phytohormones, drugs. Under the optimal conditions, it gave low detection limit of 1×10-9 g/L (Leucine, S/N=5) and good reproducibility (≤30%). The modified mesoporous silica materials have been employed in the urinary study for direct detection of metabolites.

Objective To assess the effect of the gamma knife radiosurgery (GKS) for acoustic neuromas, and to analyze the MRI features of the tumors after GKS. Methods GKS was performed in 309 patients with acoustic neuromas from December 1994 to December 2002 at our center. The Leksell Gamma Knife models B and C were used. 249 cases with 256 tumors were followed up with MRI, which included 107 males and 142 females. The median age of the patients was 48.7?14.2 years (10-77 years). GKS was applied as primary treatment for 189 cases (75.9%), and was an adjunctive management approach for 60 cases (24.1%). The median clinical follow-up period and radiological follow-up period was (26.4?21.3) months (6-101 months) and (22.4?19.0) months (6-93 months), respectively. Results Of the 256 tumors, 79 tumors (30.8%) regressed, 165 tumors (64.5%) remained stable, 12 tumors (4.7%) enlarged, and the overall tumor control rate was 95.3%. Among 30 tumors of NF-Ⅱ , 8 tumors (26.6%) regressed, 19 tumors (63.4) remained stable, and 3 tumors (10.0%) enlarged, and tumor control rate was 90%. The rate of hearing deterioration was 22.7%, the rate of permanent facial paralysis was 0%, the rate of transient facial paralysis was 5.9%, and the incidence of transient trigeminal neuropathies was 19.9%. On the image of follow-up MRI, 79 tumors (30.0%) showed loss of contrast enhancement (LOE). LOE was the imaging property of neuromas on follow-up MRI, which symbolized a chronic decrease in the vascularity of neuromas. The histological findings of LOE demonstrated radiation-induced tumor necrosis. The transient swelling of tumors could not be confounded with the growth of tumors. Conclusion GKS is confirmed to be an effective treatment for acoustic neuromas and plays an important role in the control of NF―Ⅱ, and GKS can prevent cranial nerve from injury to a great extent.
