1.An audit of infection control practices amongst dental students in University of Malaya, Malaysia

A study was done to assess and compare the levels of infection control practices amongst Year
3, 4 and 5 undergraduate dental students at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Malaya, Malaysia. This
study also compared the levels of infection control practices between the operators and the assistants
performing a similar task. A checklist was designed based on the Infection Control Guidelines published by
the Faculty of Dentistry. The audit checklist criteria were specific to the operators and assistants or common
to both. 10 pairs of students (operators and assistants) were randomly selected from Polyclinics A, B and C,
representing Year 3, 4 and 5 students respectively (n=60). The subjects were audited as soon as they
entered the clinic, during treatment and up until they exited the polyclinic. The data collected were analysed
using SPSS and Rasch model. Year 3 students performed better infection control practices (1.43 logit)
followed by Year 5 (0.96 logit) and Year 4 (0.94 logit) students. The operators in Year 5 and the assistants
in Year 3 and 4 were more compliant to infection control practices. 100% of students complied with removal
of gown before leaving the clinic. However, only 1.7% of dental students wore protective goggles or face
shield during treatment and disinfected prostheses before and after inserting into patient’s mouth.
Introduction and reinforcement of infection control practices should be incorporated at the beginning of each
academic year for all students to allow for better practice and delivery of treatment to patients.

2.Evaluation of antimicrobial efficacy of nano coated silver-titania metallic plates against selective pathogens

Aim: Nanotechnology is an increasingly growing field with its current application in Science and Technology for the purpose of manufacture of novel materials at the nanoscale level. Silver-Titania nanoparticles (AgTiO2-NPs) have been known to have inhibitory and bactericidal effects.
Methodology and Results: In the present study, stable silver-titania nanoparticles coated metallic blocks were prepared for testing their efficacy against selected bacterial pathogens like Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. In the experimental part, the bacterial pathogens were inoculated on silver-titania nanoparticle coated blocks and the treatment was carried out in „0‟ time and „24‟ h interval and were enumerated.
Conclusion, significance and impact of study:The results were compared with the control (uncoated metallic blocks) and analyzed by using Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS Z2801:2000) method. From this study, it was concluded that silver-titania nanoparticles has inhibitory effect on bacterial pathogen tested.
3.Antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory effects of N-acetylcysteine and verapamil in Wistar rats

BACKGROUND: Antinociceptive anti-inflammatory drugs have many adverse effects. The goal of this investigation is to study the probable anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects of verapamil and N-acetylcysteine (NAC) in experimental rats. METHODS: Adult male Wistar rats were randomly divided into 4 groups in the antinociceptive study, each containing 6 rats; the normal control group, which received saline (1 mL/kg); the diclofenac group, which received diclofenac sodium (5 mg/kg); the NAC group, which received NAC (125 mg/kg); and the verapamil group, which received verapamil (8 mg/kg). In the anti-inflammatory study, 5 groups were used, the 4 previous groups with the addition of an edema control group, received saline and were subjected to formalin test. Hot plate latency time was recorded for antinociceptive evaluation. Paw edema thickness and biochemical parameters were recorded for anti-inflammatory evaluation. RESULTS: Administration of NAC showed significant prolongation of hot plate latency time at 1 hour when compared to the control group while verapamil showed a significant prolongation of hot plate latency time at 1 and 2 hours when compared to the control group and NAC group values. Administration of NAC and verapamil significantly decreased paw edema thickness at 2, 4, and 8 hours when compared to edema control values. Regarding biochemical markers, NAC and verapamil significantly decreased serum nitric oxide synthase, C-reactive protein, and cyclooxygenase-2 levels compared to the edema control value. In accordance, a marked improvement of histopathological findings was observed with both drugs. CONCLUSIONS: NAC and verapamil have antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory effects comparable to diclofenac sodium.

4.The Trends of Endodontic and Prosthodontic Treatment by Postgraduate Students in University of Malaya

This study is aimed to provide an insight into the types of treatment carried out by postgraduate students in the past 10 years. A retrospective study was carried out between November 2019 and February 2020 by deriving data from postgraduate students’ clinical logbooks of three different cohorts of Master of Clinical Dentistry (Restorative Dentistry in Conservative Dentistry) in 2010, 2013 and 2016. This retrospective data was systematically extracted from the records and tabulated categorically using an Excel spreadsheet (Microsoft Office Excel 2019). A descriptive analysis was carried out to further evaluate the results. Overall, the types of treatment carried out in the field of endodontics and fixed prosthodontics has changed in the past 10 years. An increasing trend is seen in the placement of all ceramic crowns and primary root canal treatment procedures, while a decreasing pattern is evident for secondary root canal procedures and placement of dental bridges.
5.Screening of hospital admissions for COVID-19 in Brunei Darussalam

From late December 2019, an outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) occurred in Wuhan, China and has spread globally resulting in a pandemic. Brunei Darussalam reported its first case of COVID-19 on 9 March 2020. Several measures were implemented to prevent a national outbreak. We report our experience with surveillance of patients requiring admission in all government hospitals. We detected one positive case, and through contact tracing two further cases were detected. Therefore, without this screening programme, these cases would likely have been missed, leading to further nosocomial and community spread.
