In order to induce heavy Pneumocystis pneumonia, rats were treated with dexame-, thasone twice a week for 14 weeks. Mature cysts, immature cysts and ruptured cysts were, identified on lung imprints. By phase-contrast microscopy mature cysts were spherical in, shape containing intracystic bodies both spherical and irregular, small to large trophozoites having polymorphic shapes, one nucleus and many vacuoles. Elcctro-microscopically, large amount of irregular trophozoites adhered to the surface of the type I alveolar epithelial cells in the alveolar cavity were observed. The above histological findings were typical features of Pneumocystis pneumonia (Figs. 1-8).

Objective To assess the quality of life, prevalence of depression and their influencing factors in patients with alopecia, to investigate, and to provide evidences for relevant clinical therapeutic strategies to improve patients′ quality of life. Methods A questionnaire survey was carried out in 237 patients with androgenetic alopecia or alopecia areata, and their quality of life and depression were measured using dermatology life quality index(DLQI)and center for epidemiologic studies depression scale (CES-D), respectively. Factors influencing the quality of life and depression were analyzed by analysis of variance and logistic regression analysis. Results Among 237 patients with alopecia, 218 questionnaires were eligible with the mean score of DLQI being 9.1 ± 5.4. Alopecia had a moderate effect on the quality of life in general, and 38.07%of the patients were severely affected. The mean score of CES-D was 14.8 ± 9.9, and 37.61%of the patients showed depressive tendency. The DLQI score was positively correlated with CES-D score(r=0.29, P<0.01). One-way analysis of variance(ANOVA)showed that the DLQI score was not affected by age, gender, education level or the number of visits. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that the risk factors for depressive tendency in patients with alopecia were the number of visits (OR = 1.81, 95% CI: 1.21- 2.69) and DLQI score (OR = 1.08, 95% CI: 1.03- 1.13). Conclusion Alopecia not only affects the quality of life, but also mental states of patients.

AIM:To analyze circulating miR-141 in the serum as a non-invasive biomarker in the patients with prostate cancer ( PCa) and benign prostate hyperplasia ( BPH) , and healthy individuals.METHODS: A total of 75 pa-tients with PCa, 52 with BPH and 40 healthy individuals were enrolled into this study.Total RNA was isolated from the se-rum samples and the circulating levels of miR-141 were determined using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS:The serum levels of miR-141 were significantly higher in the patients with PCa compared to the patients with BPH and the healthy controls (P<0.01).The level of miR-141 in PCa group obviously differed from that in BPH group and healthy control group with high diagnosis performance, with areas under the curve of 0.785 and 0.801, respectively. No statistically significant difference of the serum miR-141 levels between the patients with BPH and healthy individuals was observed (P>0.05).The serum miR-141 level was also found to be related to Gleason score, clinical stage and bone me-tastasis status of the patients with PCa (P<0.05), and the patients with higher Gleason scores had higher serum miR-141 levels. No relationship was detected between miRNA-141 level and the patient’ s age, biochemistry recurrence and serum prostate-specific antigen level (P>0.05 for all comparisons).CONCLUSION: Circulating miR-141 could serve as a non-invasive biomarker for prostate cancer diagnosis, staging and prognosis prediction.
