Background Neointima formation plays an important role in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis and restenosis after angioplasty. We hypothesized if atorvastatin inhibits neointima formation mediating decreases in cathepsin S (Cat S) and nuclear factor-?B(NF-?B) expression. Objective The study was aimed to explore the effect of atorvastatin on the neointima formation,Cat S and NF-?B expression in rats after balloon-injured carotid artery. Methods Twenty-four male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly one of three arms:control group(n=8),surgery group(n=8) and atorvastatin group[10 mg/(kg?d),n=8] for 4 weeks.Surgery and atorvastatin group were performed with balloon angioplasty to the left common carotid artery. The serum levels of IL-1? were measured using enzyme-link-immunosorbent assay(ELISA).Carotid arteries were excised and examined with pathomorphology. The expression of Cat S and NF-?B was measured using using the RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry techniques. Results Compared with surgery group, atorvastatin decreased intima area and intima media ratio(I/M)[intima area:(148.6?8.8)?103 vs (64.8?5.1)?103 ?m2;I/M:(2.1?0.2) vs (0.9?0.1),all P

Objective To investigate expression changes of Tau protein in retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) and oligodendrocytes (Ols) after stretch injury in rats and explore the relationship of Tau protein with pathological changes after axonal injury. Methods Morphological changes of optic nerves, RGCs and OLs after stretch injury were examined under light microscope in control group, stretch only group, heat stress only group and heat stress pretreatment plus stretch group. The expressions of Tau protein in RGCs and OLs after heat stress and/or stretch injury were observed by using immunohistechemical stai-ning. Results Pathological changes of axons, RGCs and OLs were identified morphologically or quan-titatively after stretch injury to the optic nerves, which was significantly ameliorated through pretreatment with heat stress plus stretch injury. The expressions of Tau protein in RGCs and OLs were increased in stretch only group. There was no significant expression change of Tau protein in heat stress only group. Expression of Tan protein was obviously decreased in heat stress pretreatment plus stretch group. Con-clusions Both neurons and glial cells are involved in pathological process after axonal injury. The ex-pression changes of Tau protein are probably related to delayed axotomy and neuron apoptosis. Heat stress can relieve the impairment of cystoskeleton through decreasing and delaying the expression of Tau protein.

Aim To investigate antiaging effects of beta-carotene(?-C) from dunaliella salina on fruit flies and rats and to probe possible mechanisms. Methods The whole study contains fruit flies experiment and rats experiment. In the fruit flies experiment, fruit flies were divided into nine groups according to different ingredient in the nutrient medium. We took life span, flight capability, the number of copulatory fruit flies aged 8 days, and head MDA content of fruit flies aged 40 days as indexes of aging. In rats experiment, 54 aged male rats were divided randomly into 6 groups and bred for 45 days with different diet.Plasma MDA,CAT and GSH-Px were detected.MDA,SOD and GSH-Px in heart, liver, pulmo, lien and brain were also detected. Results Compared with control group in fruit flies experiment, the shortest life span, maximum life span and mean life span were increased in each experimental group.Flight rate and flight frequency were increased, the number of copulatory fruit flies was also increased. The content of MDA was significantly decreased. In rats experiment, plasma MDA content was significantly decreased. The activity of GSH-Px was elevated.Similar results were obtained in different tissues.MDA content was significantly decreased in each tissue sample, while activities of SOD and GSH-Px were significantly inceased. Conclusion ?-C from dunaliella salina had antiaging effects on fruit flies and aged rats. The possible mechanism resided in its antioxidative effects owing to the elevated antioxidases.

OBJECTIVE:To establish the quality standard for Solanum tuberdsm. METHODS:The microscopic characteristics were detected;TLC was used for qualitative identification;moisture, ash, heavy metals and the amount of extract were deter-mined;HPLC was conducted for content determination of oxidized cyanidin:the column was Alltima C18 with mobile phase of ace-tonitrile-0.1% trifluoroacetic acid(80∶20,V/V)at a flow rate of 1.0 ml/min,detection wavelength was 538 nm,column tempera-ture was 30℃. RESULTS:It showed clear microscopic identification map. S. tuberdsm TLC had clear spots and well separated. The water content was 8.5%-11.0%;total ash was 2.0%-2.9%;Pb was lower than 5 ppm and alcohol-soluble extracts was 15.6%-22.3%. The linear range of oxidized cyanidin was 0.043-0.215 μg(r=0.999 8);RSDs of precision, stability and reproduc-ibility tests were lower than 2.0%;recovery was 95.50%-99.65%(RSD=1.35%,n=9). CONCLUSIONS:The established method can be used for the quality control of S. tuberdsm.

0.05).The accuracy of Borrmann type classification in 14 cases of advanced gastric carcinoma undergone gastrectomy was 92.8%.Conclusion The gastric carcinoma detection rate with NHSCT is similar to that with fibro-gastroscopic or double-contrast barium examination. The direct and indirect signs of gastric carcinoma can be found and the Borrmann type classification can be made by NHSCT.However, the non-contrast enhancement scanning is limited for the early gastric carcinoma detection, and can be improved by contrast enhancement scanning.

ObjectiveTo explore the risk factors for upper gastrointestinal bleeding after craniocerebral trauma.MethodsTo retrospectively summarize the clinical features of 80 cases with craniocerebral truma and to analyze the risk factors for upper gastrointestinal bleeding. Results Upper gastrointestinal bleeding was present in 39 of the 80 cases(48.8%) .Twenty-one of the 39 cases with gastrointestinal bleeding died(53.8%)In the patients without gastrointestinal bleeding, 5 cases died (19.2%) .Among the factors affecting the gastrointestinal bleeding after craniocerebral trauma, Glasgow Coma Scale(GCS) score, septicemia, decerebration, hypotention, metabolic acidosis and hyperglucose were closely related risk factors(x2 = 13.96;x2 = 27.43;x2 =46.28 ;x2 = 27.33 ;x2 = 11.88 ;x2 =5.71 ,P <0.05 or P <0.01).ConclusionProphylaxis against related risk factors could reduce the incidence of gastrointestinal bleeding, improve the prognosis and decrease the mortality of craniocerebral trauma.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of Liriope platyphylla total saponin (LPTS) on learning, memory, neuromediators and metabolites in aging mice induced by D-galactose. METHODS: Ninety Kunming mice were randomly divided into nine groups: normal saline (NS)-treated group, untreated group, high- (100 mg/kg), medium- (50 mg/kg) and low-dose (10 mg/kg) LPTS-treated groups, Shuxuening-treated group, jiaogulanosidi-treated group, flunarizine-treated group and vitamin E-treated group. The Kunming mice in the NS-treated group were administered with NS by intraperitoneal injection, while the aging mice in the other eight groups were administered with D-galactose by intraperitoneal injection. At the same time, the aging mice in different groups were fed with corresponding drugs for 42 days, and the aging items of the mice in different groups were measured, respectively. RESULTS: LPTS could improve the memory of aging mice induced by D-galactose, promote its body weight, and increase the thymus and spleen indexes of the aging mice. LPTS could decrease the levels of MDA and lipofuscin, inhibit MAO activity and increase SOD activity and GSH-Px level. CONCLUSION: LPTS may improve the ability of learning and memory and delay aging.
