Inspection of the complexion is one of the characteristics of traditional Chinese medical diagnosis. Traditional Chinese medicine puts high emphasis on inspection of the complexion and there exists detailed discussion on inspection of facial expression in Neijing. The so-called inspection of facial expression is a method to diagnose diseases according to the theory of five Zang-organs matching five elements and five colors by distinguishing various changes of facial color, such as green, red, yellow, white and black based on yin and yang doctrine and five elements theory. Nowadays, more and more experts have introduced color optical theory and modern devices into the modern research field of traditional Chinese medical diagnosis with the development of color optical theory and the renewal of determining devices, such as digital camera, color differentiation meter and spectrophotometer, to make the research more scientific and objective and avoid the deviations caused by human factors. The modern study of traditional Chinese medicine diagnosis has made fare progress, consequently enriching the contents of its facial color observation and giving a more scientific explanation of it. However, the devices being used now are still disunited; the data may be unilateral and cannot contain the whole information. So the most important task is to invent and use scientific devices conforming better with the theory of five colors observation in traditional Chinese medicine.

Objective To observe the dynamic changes of high mobility group protein B1 ( HMGB1 )expression in the lung of rats with Vibrio vulnificus sepsis so as to unravel the role of HMGB1 in lung injury. Methods Sixty rats of clean grade were randomly divided into normal control group ( A group, n = 10) and Vibrio vulnificus sepsis group (B group, n =50). Sepsis model was made in rats with subcutaneous injection of Vibrio vulnificus with concentration of 6 × 108 cfu/ml in dose of 0. 1 ml/100 g into left lower limb. The rats of group B were sacrificed 1 h, 6 h, 12 h, 24 h and 48 h after infection for taking lung tissues to detect the water content of lung and to observe the histopathological changes in lung under light microscope. The expression of HMGB1 mRNA and the level of HMGB1 protein in the lungs were detected by RT-PCR and Western blot, respectively. Data were analysed with ANOVA and LSD method for comparison between groups, and P <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results Compared with the group A (0.652±0. 177), the expressions of HMGB1 mRNA in lung of rats of group B were significantly higher in 12 hours (1. 161 ±0.358, P=0.013), 24 hours (1.679 ±0.235, P =0.000) and 48 hours (1.258 ±0.274, P=0.004) and reached the peak in 24 h. Compared with group A (0.594 ±0. 190), the level of HMGB1 protein in rats of group B 6 h after infection ( 1. 408 ± 0. 567, P = 0. 026) was significantly increased (P<0.05), and it reached peak in 24 h (2.415 ± 1.064, P =0.000) after infection. Compared with group A (0.699 ± 0.054), the lung water contents in rats of group B were significantly increased in 6 h (0.759±0.030, P=0.001), in 12 h (0.767 ±0.023, P =0.000), in 24 h (0.771 ±0.043, P=0.000) and in 48 h (0.789 ±0.137, P=0.000) after infection. Compared with group A, the pathological changes in the lung of rats in group B showed clearly marked pulmonary vascular congestion, interstitial edema and inflammatory cell infiltration, and those changes became more and more serious until alveolar sacs entirely collapsed and the boundaries of the alveolar septa could not be clearly identified in 48 h. Conclusions Vibrio vulnificus sepsis leads to the lung injury of infected rats, and the increase in the expression of HMGB1 mRNA in lung might be one of the mechanisms of lung injury in rats with Vibrio vulnificus sepsis.

Objective: To investigate the effect of cinobufacini on proliferation, celly cycle distribution, invasion capability of MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cell line in vitro and possible mechanism. Methods: The effect of cinobufacini on cell growth was measured by CCK-8 reagent kit. Cell cycle distribution was determined by flow cytometry. The invasion capability in vitro was detected by Transwell chamber assay. The mRNA expressions of cell cycle related factors (cyclin) and p21 were tested by RT-PCR. Results: Cinobufacini inhibited proliferation of MDA-MB-231 cells. The half inhibition concentration (IC50) was 0.31 mg/mL. The inhibitory effect was timE-dependent (P<0.05). Cinobufacini significantly decreased invasion capability of MDA-MB-231 cells in vitro compared with control group (P<0.05). Cinobufacini induced S-phase arrest of MDA-MB-231 cells in a concentration-dependent manner (P<0.000 1). Cinobufacini down-regulated the expression levels of cyclin A1, cyclin D1, and cyclin E1, while up-regulated that of p21 in MDA-MB-231 cell line. However, there was no marked change in the expression of cyclin B1. Conclusion: Cinobufacini inhibits cell proliferation and influences the cell cycle distribution in vitro by regulating the expression of cyclin A1, cyclin D1, cyclin E1 and p21 in breast can-cer cells.

This paper is aimed to observe the difference of facial color of people with different health status by spectral photometric color measuring technique according to the theory of facial color diagnosis in Internal Classic. We gathered the facial color information about the health status of persons in healthy group (183), sub-healthy group (287) and disease group (370) respectively. The information included L, a, b, C values and reflection of different wavelengths in 400-700nm with CM-2600D spectral photometric color measuring instrument on 8 points. The results indicated that overall complexion color values of the people in the three groups were significantly different. The persons in the disease group looked deep dark in features. The people in the sub-healthy group looked pale in features. The loci L, a, b, C values were with varying degrees of significant differences (P < 0.05) at 6 points among the groups, and the central position of the face in all the groups was the position with most significant differences. Comparing the facial color information at the same point of the people in the three groups, we obtained each group's diagnostic special point. There existed diagnostic values in distinguishing disease status and various status of health in some degree by spectral photometric color measuring technique. The present method provides a prosperous quantitative basis for Chinese medical inspection of the complexion diagnosis.
