Objective To observe the substance P(SP) and calcitonin gene-related peptide(CGRP) expressions in the temporomandibular joints(TM J) of the rats undergone emotional stress and explore the relationship between emotional stress and temporomandibular joint disorder(TMD). Methods Ninety SD rats were averagely randomly divided into emotional stress ( ES ) group( n = 30 ), electric foot-shocked (FS) group ( n = 30 ) and control (CON) group( n = 30). The emotional stress was induced by communication box. The TMJ tissues in ES and CON groups were removed after 1, 3 and 5 weeks of emotional stress for scanning electron microscope ( SEM ) test and immunohistochemistry test. The SP and CGRP expressions were examined with SABC immunohistochemistry and then analyzed by image analysis system. Results The expressions of SP and CGRP had significant difference after 1 ,3 and 5 weeks emotional stress ( SP: 124.5 ± 16.9,185.6 ± 1.8 and 193.5 ± 3.5, respectively; CGRP: 185.9 ±5.3, 112.5 ±5.2 and 174.3 ±5.3 ,respectively) (P<0. 05 ). The SEM results showed that there was a series of structural change on the condylar surface after emotional stress. Conclusion The SP and CGRP energy nerve fibers take part in the TMJ pathological process undergone emotional stress.

Objective To investigate the role of psychological intervention in the prevention of the temporomandibular joint disease (TMD) , through the observation of the relative changes in the rat TMJ under psychological stress after psychological intervention. Methods The rat model of communication box was built to exert the psychological stress. The antianxiety agent was applied before stress, and the stressor was removed after stress. The expression of the proinflammatory cytokines IL-1 and TNF-α in the mandibular condylar chondrocytes in rat TMJ was detected by ELISA and RT-PCR. Results The RT-PCR results showed that the expression of IL-1 mR-NA increased into the peak in the 1st week, weakened in the 3rd week, and returned to normal in the 5th week, while the TNF-αmRNA peaked in the 1st week, returned to normal in the 3rd week. The ELISA results showed that there was no significant difference of the OD value of the serum IL-1 and TNF-α(0. 095 ±0. 006,0. 077 ± 0.007,0.069 ±0.009 ;0.079 ±0.010,0.075 ±0. 009,0.079 ± 0.012) in the antianxiety agent group (0. 107 ± 0.024,0. 101 ±0.005,0.088 ±0.010)and the stressor removal group(0. 090 ±0.016,0. 088 ±0.005,0.089 ± 0.011) , compared with the control group(0.087 ±0.004,0.090 ±0.009,0.089 ±0.010;0.074 ±0.008,0.069 ±0.015,0.068 ±0.011) (P>0.05), while significant differences were observed when compared with the psychological stress group(0.282 ±0.045,0.226 ±0.021,0.092 ±0.002;0. 164 ±0.009,0.123 ±0.013,0.091 ± 0.006) (P<0.05 ). Conclusion Application of the antianxiety agent and stressor removal could effectively counter the influence of psychological stress to TMJ, which provides good experience for the clinical prevention of TMD.

Objective To investigate the relationship between pancreatic cancer and diabetes mellitus (DM). Methods Two hundreds and twenty patients with pancreatic cancer and 300 controls, who suffered from non-digestive tract, non-neoplastic or non-hormone-related disorders, were enrolled from 1997 to 2007. The incidence of diabetes between the two groups and the relationship between pancreatic cancer and diabetes were compared, pancreatic cancer patients with DM were compared with patients without DM for their gender, age, location and differentiate degree of the cancer. Results The incidence of DM in the two groups were 33.1% and 9.67%, respectively, and the difference was significant (P < 0.05). In the pancreatic cancer group, the proportion of patients with DM diagnosed within 2 years or for more than 10 years were 25.91% (57/73) and 3.18% (7/73), which were significant higher than those in the control group 6.0% (18/29) and 0.67% (2/29)) (χ2=46.15, P<0.01, 0R=6.07; χ2 =4.72, P<0.01, OR=4.90). In the pancreatic cancer group, the proportion of patients with DM diagnosed within 2~5 years or 5~10 years was not significant different when compared with that of the control group, and there was no significant difference in terms of gender, age and cancer location between the pancreatic cancer patients with DM and without DM. The majority of pancreatic cancer patients with DM had corpora mammillaria or well differentiated adenocarcinoma, and the majority of pancreatic cancer patients without DM had differentiated adenocarcinoma. Conclusions DM was closely related with pancreatic cancer and DM may be one of the presentations of pancreatic cancer, as well as a possible risk factor for the tumor.

Objective: This study aimed to detect the expression levels of the key proteins involved in the insulin-like growth factor signaling pathway of patients with ovarian cancer. These proteins include insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF1), insulin-like growth factor-1 receptor (IGF1R), and protein kinase B (AKT). Methods: Ovarian cancer tissues were subjected to drug resistance tests using the ATP-TCA method. IGF1, IGF1R, AKT, and multidrug resistance protein2 (MRP2) expressions were detected in the sera of patients with ovarian cancer by conducting enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. IGF1, IGF1R, and AKT protein expressions were detected in the surgical specimens by immunohistochemistry. Patients were instructed to monitor their cancer antigen 125 (CA125) levels monthly from the date a patient was discharged to the last day of chemotherapy (or until chemotherapy was completed). A color Doppler ultrasound, CT, or MRI scan was required if CA125 value is abnormal. The total follow-up time was one year. Results: IGF1, IGF1R, and AKT expressions were significantly higher in the cisplatin-resistant group than in the cisplatin-sensitive group (P =0.000 1). Immunohistochemical results showed that IGF1, IGF1R, and AKT expressions were significantly higher in the cisplatin-resistant group than in the cisplatin-sensitive group (P<0.05). The monthly CA125 values of 40 patients were obtained after chemotherapy. In the cisplatin-sensitive group, 18 of the 24 cases exhibited normal CA125 values for more than one year, and the remaining 6 cases maintained normal values for more than half a year. In the cisplatin-resistant group, 16 cases revealed higher than normal CA125 values for half a year after chemotherapy. Recurrent lesions were observed in their color Doppler ultrasound results or MRI scans. Conclusion: Cisplatin resistance in ovarian cancer is strongly correlated with the expressions of IGF1, IGF1R and AKT. IGF1 is a potential candidate for the targeted therapy of ovarian cancer.

Objective To assess the analytical performance of three sensitive cardiac troponin Ⅰ assays and compare the clinical application to provide help in choosing the detection method for clinical laboratory. Methods A total of 474 serum samples were collected from apparently healthy subjects and a total of 112 serum samples were collected from patients presenting with symptoms suggestive of acute myocardial infarction. The functional sensitivities of three assays from Abbott, Beckman-Coulter and Ortho were determined ( CV = 10% ). The reference ranges have been established. The analytic performance was compared according to the assessment mode described by Apple. The relationship was compared among the different assays. The preliminary clinical application value for different detection methods has been evaluated and validated with self-established reference ranges. Results The functional sensitivities ( CV = 10% ) of the cTnI assays for Abbott, Beckman-Coulter and Ortho were 0. 030, 0. 04 and 0. 013 μg/L, respectively. The 99th percentiles of cTnI in healthy volunteers were 0. 021, 0. 02 and 0. 026 μg/L respectively. The analytical data of ROC curve showed that the area under curve (AUC) of the cTnI assays for Abbott,Beckman-Coulter and Ortho for diagnosis of AMI was 0. 852,0. 909 and 0. 910,respectively. There was no statistical difference between any two methods(Z1 = 1.18 ,Z2 = 1.21 ,Z3 =0. 026,all P >0. 05). There were good consistency between the 99th percentile obtained from our laboratory and suggested by manufacturers (Kappa value were 1. 000, 0. 730 and 0. 893 respectively, all P < 0. 01 ). Conclusions The analytical performance of two cTnl assays is "clinical accepted" ,the other one is accepted according to guideline. All of them could detect cTnI in apparently healthy subjects. There exist differences among three assays, but their diagnostic characteristics for AMI are not significantly different.
