Objective To improve recognition of posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) in children. Methods Two children with PRES admitted to children's hospital were included. Clinical data were retrospectively studied and related literatures were reviewed. Results The primary diseases of the two patients are systemic lupus erythematosus and nephritic syndrome, respectively. They all developed an acute onset of headache, visual changes, consciousness disturbance, hypertension and seizures. Cranial MRI showed bilateral parietal, temporal and occipital cortical or subcortical lesions with hypointensity on Tl-weighted imaging and hyperintensity on T2-weighted imaging. Clinical symptoms resolved soon and radiographic recovery occurred within 14 to 21 days with prompt anti-hypertension treatment and supportive care. Among the mechanisms which might contribute to the development of PRES, acute elevated blood pressure seems to be the most important factors in these two cases. Prompt anti-hypertension treatment usually can reverse the PRES lesion. Conclusions It is important to improve cognition of PRES in children. Delayed treatment can cause permanent neurological impairment. Doctors should be alert to this syndrome. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment are very important. (J Clin Pediatr,2010,28(2):168-170)

Objective : To study the protective effects of two antioxidants on the influence of passive smoking on learning and memory ability of mouse offspring. Method: Passive smoking model of pregnant mice was established. Learning and memory ability was evaluated by water maze and long term potentiation (LTP). Nitric oxide (NO) content and nitric oxide synthase (NOS) activity of brain, vitamin E(VE) concentration and reactive oxygen species (ROS) of serum were determined. Results: Latency (the swimming time from beginning to endpoint) and errors (the number of entering blind end) in control and two antioxidant groups were shorter as compared with tobacco smoking (TS) group after 6 d in water maze test, and still shorter after 10 d in control and TS+VE groups. LTP was inhibited in TS group but increased significantly in two antioxidant groups. NOS activitiy was significantly higher in TS group in comparisonwith the control. NO content of TS+VE group was significantly lower than TS and TS+Q groups. Serum VE concentration and ROS level were correlated with the results of latency in water maze and LTP. Conclusion: Passive smoking of the pregnant mice may restrain LTP formation through disturbance of hippocampus function, and reduce the learning and memory ability of the offspring and VE may protect such effects.

Objective To observe whether the increase of oxidative stress in PC12 cells could influence the levels of protein carbonyls and nitrotyrosine and alter the cytoskeleton and cell morphology under clinostat condition, and whether the increase of content of nitrate/nitrite in cell culture medium could influence the cell proliferation and differentiation.Method Cell morphology, carbonylated actin and nitrotyrosinated tubulin, and mRNA and protein express of nNOS and iNOS were observed and determined with immunofluorescence and RT-PCR technology in clinostat rotated and control static groups. At the same time, cell density was measured and cell cycles were detected with flow cytometry. The relationship between all these changes and NOS were also analyzed.Result The levels of carbonylated and nitrotyrosinated cytoskeleton protein were altered,no obvious changes in cell morphology but neurite outgrowth after on a clinostat rotation.Cell density also increased significantly,DNA synthesis in cell cycles was shortened. Conclusion All of these results indicate that simulated weightlessness do not alter cell morphology and is beneficial to the growth of PC12 cells. The mechanism involved may be associated with the increase of NOS activity.
