Acta Medica Philippina 2023;57(2):38-43
Objectives:
Video-based learning of surgical skills is a useful complement in training programs. This is more evident where direct patient exposure is limited due to multiple factors. In ophthalmic surgery, access to high quality ocular surgery videos such as for cataract operations, can provide significant learning points for trainees in an institutional program. Creation therefore of a local, curated, and indexed library of cataract surgery would support alternative means to maximize training of new ophthalmic surgeons. The objective of the project was to develop a local library of cataract surgery videos as an adjunct teaching tool for resident trainees in a Philippine tertiary eye care center.
Methods:
A collection of cataract surgery videos from 2013-2020 were compiled into a single workstation. Videos were reviewed and catalogued using set keywords for easy searchability and labelling.
Results:
256 videos of cataract surgeries were compiled into the library. 6 main headings for the keywords, with 159 total subheadings were established to provide robust tagging and search options to index the video.
Conclusion
Particularly in Ophthalmic surgery, refinement of surgical technique is essential in ensuring better postoperative visual outcomes. This is achieved through repetition and careful dissection of operative technique. The use of a library with multiple videos of a similar procedure allows trainees more exposure to certain cases. This ultimately affords trainees, better experience and confidence in their own surgeries.

Microorganisms contain a large number of biocatalysts, which are of great potential in industrial applications. However, the traditional cultural approaches can obtain only less than 1% of microorganisms. As a culture-independent method, metagenomics is an advanced solution by means of extracting all microbial genomic DNAs in certain environmental habitat, constructing and screening metagenomic libraries to seek novel functional genes. It serves as an effective tool for studying these uncultured microorganisms. Therefore, mining novel biocatalysts from metagenome has drawn the attention of researchers in the world. In this paper, environment sample category, genomic DNA extraction, library construction and screening strategies were reviewed. Recent examples of isolated biocatalysts from metagenomic libraries were presented. Future research directions of metagenomics were also discussed.

Tumor is a serious threat to human health. At present, surgical resection, chemoradiotherapy, targeted therapy and immunotherapy are the main therapeutic strategies. Monoclonal antibody has gradually become an indispensable drug type in the clinical treatment of cancer due to its high efficiency and low toxicity. Phage antibody library technology (PALT) is a novel monoclonal antibody preparation technique. The recombinant immunoglobulin variable region of heavy chain (VH)/variable region of light chain (VL) gene is integrated into the phage vector, and the antibody is expressed on the phage surface in the form of fusion protein to obtain a diverse antibody library. Through the process of adsorption-elution-amplification, the antibody library can be screened to obtain the antibody molecule with specific binding antigen as well as its gene sequence. PALT has the advantages of short antibody production cycle, strong plasticity of antibody structure, large antibody yield, high diversity and direct production of humanized antibodies. It has been used in screening tumor markers and preparation of antibody drugs for breast cancer, gastric cancer, lung cancer and liver cancer. This article reviews the recent progress and the application of PALT in tumor therapy.

Journal of the Korean Dietetic Association 2008;14(3):218-228
This study was conducted to evaluate the quantitative and qualitative aspects of Korean websites related to nutrition education. A total of 30 websites were ultimately selected through 4 major Internet search engines, including Naver, Yahoo, Daum, and Nate, using several key words (i.e., nutrition education, dietary life education, nutrition information, nutrition management, etc.). A systematic review was conducted for each of the selected websites based on the American Library Association (ALA) website checklist and a data abstract form that was adapted from a previous study. Approximately two thirds of the websites were established between 2002 and 2005, and 46.6% were administrated by public health centers or schools/colleges. The most frequently targeted group was the generally healthy population (30.0%). Among the various topics of nutrition information provided, "balanced diet" was the topic most often provided by the websites. Also, an increasing trend for utilizing multimedia tools was observed; however, little technical support or instruction was provided by the websites. Only 50.0% and 63.3% of the sites clearly stated their operators and sources of provided information, respectively. Overall, the purposes of sites were clearly stated, and were not overshadowed by advertising. And most features of design, stability, and content were found to be appropriate, but several aspects, such as establishing a help/FAQ menu, regularly updating nutrition information, and converting provided information into a database for easier search and update, needed improvement. In addition, active operational strategies are greatly needed to encourage the application of materials found on sites into real educational settings.

6.The Cost of Postgraduate Medical Education and Continuing Medical Education: Re-Examining the Status Fifty Years Back.
Korean Journal of Family Medicine 2015;36(2):46-49
The subject of the cost and value of medical education is becoming increasingly important. However, this subject is not a new one. Fifty years ago, Mr. DH Patey, Dr. OF Davies, and Dr. John Ellis published a report on the state of postgraduate medical education in the UK. The report was wide-ranging, but it made a considerable mention of cost. In this short article, I have presented the documentary research that I conducted on their report. I have analyzed it from a positivist perspective and have concentrated on the subject of cost, as it appears in their report. The authors describe reforms within postgraduate medical education; however, they are clear from the start that the issue of cost can often be a barrier to such reforms. They state the need for basic facilities for medical education, but then outline the financial barriers to their development. The authors then discuss the costs of library services for education. They state that the "annual spending on libraries varies considerably throughout the country." The authors also describe the educational experiences of newly graduated doctors. According to them, the main problem is that these doctors do not have time to attend formal educational events, and that this will not be possible until there is "a more graduated approach to responsible clinical work," something which is not possible without financial investment. While concluding their report, the authors state that the limited money invested in postgraduate medical education and continuing medical education has been well spent, and that this has had a dual effect on improving medical education as well as the standards of medical care.

7.Inquiries About Journal Selection in Index Medicus (Medline/PubMed).
Journal of Korean Neuropsychiatric Association 2003;42(6):669-673
It is my great pleasure to give a brief advice in responcse to the request from the Editorial Board of The Journal of Korean Neuropsychiatric Association that has a firm willingness to be approved for listing in the Index Medicus, Medline/PubMed of the National Library of Medicine (NLM), NIH of USA. Herein, I totally recall my cherishing experience of the past responsibility as a passed Editor-in-Chief of The Korean Journal of Hepatology, which has been indexed since 2002. And I review the factsheets of the Literature Selection Technical Review Committee (LSTRC) of the NLM. Of course, The Journal of Korean Neuropsychiatric Association should make steady efforts to be upgraded. Undoubtedly, I believe dream comes true.

8.Indexing the Korean Journal of Radiology by the Institute for Scientific Information for SCI-Expanded and by the National Library of Medicine for Index Medicus/MEDLINE.
Journal of Korean Neuropsychiatric Association 2003;42(5):541-543
A journal indexed by the Institute for Scientific Information for SCI-expanded and by the National Library of Medicine for Index Medicus/MEDLINE is important to be recognized internationally. The Korean Journal of Radiology has been indexed in the database of the SCI-expanded since 2001 and Medicus/MEDLINE since 2000. The criteria for journal evaluation and selection by the National Library of Medicine include quality of editorial work, production quality, and quality of content. Most of the candidate journals contain reasonably good quality in editorial work and production. Thus, we believe that the quality of content is the most important criteria for the journal selection. To maintain a good quality of content, selection of the manuscript containing originality and scientific merits is imperative in review process. Highly selected, small number of articles per issue would be a wise editorial policy for a journal to be indexed by the well-known database.

A novel synthetic hexapeptide (SFKLRY-NH2) that displays angiogenic activity has been identified by positional scanning of a synthetic peptide combinatorial library (PS-SPCL). This study was carried out to investigate the irritation of the SFKLRY-NH2 on the skin. The tests were performed on the basis of Korea Food and Drug Administration (KFDA) guidelines. In results, cell toxicity is not appeared for SFKLRY-NH2 in HaCaT cells and B16F10 cells. SFKLRY-NH2 induced no skin irritation at low concentration (10 microM), mild irritation at high concentration (10mM). We consider that this result is helpful for saying about the safety of SFKLRY-NH2 in clinical use.
