1.Hyperhomocysteinemia, Genetic Polymorphism of Methylenetetrahydrofolate Reductase and Cerebrovascular Diseases
International Journal of Cerebrovascular Diseases 2006;0(07):-
Hyperhomocysteinemia is one of the independent risk factors of cerebrovascular diseases. Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) C677T gene mutation often results in the increase of plasma homocysteine levels, but the relationship between the genetic polymorphism of MTHFR and cerebrovascular diseases is not significant.

OBJECTIVE To analyze the incidence of the bifurcation of the facial nerve in mastoid segment and to give the anatomic information for mastoid surgery. METHODS From March 2005 to April 2006, there were 112 patients undergoing the decompress operations which the range included the mastoid segment. The bifurcation of the mastoid segment was recorded and compared with the preoperational High-resolution Computed tomography (HRCT) scans. RESULTS There were 5 cases with the nerve bifurcation. The incidence was 4.5 %. Four of those 5 cases were diagnosed preoperatively by HRCT scans (the accurate rate was 80 %). CONCLUSION Bifurcation of the mastoid segment was not rare. Otologic surgeon should pay attention to this anatomic variation to avoid injuring the branch of the facial nerve. HRCT scans were useful to find this abnormality.

Objective To analyze the skeletal structure features of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) by using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) in patients with sleep bruxism. Methods CBCT scanning was performed in the intercuspal position in 30 patients with sleep bruxism (sleep bruxism group) and 30 health adults (normal group). The reconstruction of TMJ images were analysed by Invivo5 software. Measurements of horizontal section include antero-posterior diameter, medial-lateral diameter and axial angel. Measurements of sagittal section include acetabulum depth, aricular eminence inclination, anterior space, superior space and posterior space. Measurements of coronal section include force angle. Results There were no significant differences in both sides of TMJ between sleep bruxism group and normal group(P>0.05). Compared with control group, there were significant differences in antero-posterior diameter, medial-lateral diameter, acetabulum depth, anterior space and force angle in sleep bruxism group (P<0.05). There were decreased antero posterior diameter, me?dial-lateral diameter and increased acetabulum depth, anterior space and force angle in sleep bruxism group than those of control group. Conclusion The bilateral bone stuctures of TMJ are basically symmetry in patients with sleep bruxism. There is no significant change in condylar position in acetabulum , but there is a trend of absorbtion of anterior space and de?crease of condyle in patients with sleep bruxism.

Chinese Journal of Neuroanatomy 2000;16(4):-
The animal experiment studies have demonstrated that hyperthermia is a strong teratogen to many kinds of animal with high incidence of neural tube defects(NTD).Epidermiological investigation showed that hyperthermia was closely related to the acencephaly and excenphaly in human being, but little was known about the distinct mechanism of NTD induced by hyperthermia. In order to study the developmental mechanism of NTD induced by hyperthermia,we observed the effects of hyperthermia on the neuroepithelial cells in primary culture. The neural tubes of the hamster embryos on 10 d after fertilization were obtained.the neuroepithelia were dissociated and then seeded at the density of 1×106 cells per well. The cells were divided into experimental and control groups randomly. The experimental groups were exposed to 42 C for 20 min, whereas groups exposed to 37 Cserved as control. After treatment of hyperthermia, the cells were incubated continuously at 37 C in a 95%air/5%CO2 humidified incubator, the culture was terminated after different intervals.Phase-contrast microscopy.scanning electron microscopy.transmission electron microscopy,MTT assay, agarose gel electrophoresis analysis,TUNEL detection, immunocytochemistryand image analysis were made. The results of the experimental groups indicated that the floating cells and apoptotic cells increased in number, the neurites of the cells were shortened even disappeared, the survival cells decreased in number, the ultrastructure of the cells demonstrated distinct abnormal changes, the function of mitochondria was impaired, the expressions of both bcl-2 and bax were abnormal. The above results suggest that hyperthermia may induce apoptosis of neuroepithelial cells, duringwhich bcl-2 and bax genes may play important regulatory roles.
