Fibrosis is the major cause of corneal scarring.Transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) plays a key role in corneal homeostasis and repair.Corneal epithelial basement membrane is thought to be the important barrier of corneal epitheliumstroma interaction.In different stages of corneal wound healing,the isoforms of TGF-β have different temporal and spatial expression.The integrity of basement membrane is a critical factor of these procedures.The temporal and spatial distributions of TGF-β isoforms play the crucial roles in cell migration,proliferation,phenotype changes and deposition of extracellular matrix in corneal wound healing.It is the mechanism of corneal scarring and scar-free healing.This article reviews recent articles to elucidate the biological functions of TGF-β and the temporal and spatial distribution of its isoforms in corneal wound healing.

Objective To establish a method for simultaneous determination of icariin and naringin content in bushen huayu extract by HPLC. Methods Reverse-phase high performance liquid chromatography ( RP-HPLC ) separation was performed one C18 column (4.6 mmí250 mm,5 μm).The mobile phase was acetonitrile containing 0.2%H4PO3(pH=2.9). Gradient elution with a flow rate of 0. 8 mL·min-1 was applied to achieve the separation. The detection wavelength was set at 269 nm,and the column temperature was 30℃. Results Icariin had a good linear range from 0. 3-3. 0μg (r=0. 999 9),the recovery rate was 105. 6%,and RSD was 0. 95%. Naringin was linear within the range of 0. 12-1. 20 μg (r=0. 999 9). The recovery rate was 94. 0%and RSD was 0. 52%. Conclusion The method is simple,stable,accurate,and reproducible,which can be used as the quality control standard for bushen huayue extract.

Objective To investigate the relationship between children history of asthma and family history of asthma.Methods Three thousand and five hundred outpatients of asthma children were selected as investigation subjects.Family history of asthma was investigated in the form of questionnaire,and analyzed them from whether or not having family history of asthma,the first and second degree relative having family history of asthma.Results There was no family history of asthma in 1 659 cases(47.4%) and while 1 841 cases had family history of asthma(52.6%).The children who had family history of asthma were slightly more than those who had no family history of asthma.Among the 1 841 cases with family history of asthma,the first degree relatives with family history of asthma were more than those second degree relatives with fa-mily history of asthma.The incidence rate of relatives with family history of asthma on mother′s side was 59.9%,and the incidence rate of the father′s relatives was 40.1%.The incidence rate of mother′s relatives was higher than that of father′s relatives(P

Objective To assess the removal efficiency of bacteria by water purifiers using different purifying materials. Methods The bacterial removal effectiveness of 7 types of commercially available water purifiers was tested using the National Standard Methods. Results Apart from one type using a single activated-carbon filtering material, the bacteria removal effectiveness of the other 6 types of water purifiers met the requirements of water purification device according to the rated treated-water-capacity conditions. Conclusion The removal efficiency of bacteria by water purifiers made from different filtering materials was different. Bacteria elimination effectiveness of a single-filtering material was lower and it is inversely proportional to its water-treating capacity. Water purifiers using multiple-purifying materials gave better removal efficiency of bacteria.

Objective To explore the possible association of oxidative stress reaction with the mRNA expression of podocin in rats with adriarnycin(ADR)-induced nephrotic syndrome.Methods mRNA expression of podocin in renal cortex were investigated by in situ hybridization staining and semi-quantitative RT-PCR in ADR-induced nephrotic rats,the level of malondialdehyde(MDA), superoxide dismutase(SOD)and total antioxidative capacity(T-AOC) in renal cortex were measured, then the relationship between them was evaluated.Results In ADR rats, MDA increased at d7 and reached a significant higher level at d14 and d21;SOD decreased at d14 and persisted to d21; T-AOC decreased at d21.The podocin mRNA mostly expressed in cytoplasm of glomerular cells. Both the number and the intensity of positive cells increased notably as time progressed in ADR rats.The level of podocin mRNA expression showed no obvious changes at d7, while prominently increased at d14 and pesisted to d21 in ADR rats.There was significant correlativity between the mRNA expression of podocin and the level of MDA,SOD,T-AOC.Conclusion The mRNA expression of podocin is correlated with oxidative stress reaction in rats with ADR-induced nephrotic syndrome.

Objective To evaluate the effectiveness of renal sympathetic denervation (RDN) for hypertensive heart dis-ease combined with systolic heart failure. Methods Two patients (mean age 35 years) with hypertensive heart disease com-bined with systolic heart failure on maximal tolerated heart failure therapy underwent bilateral renal denervation. Echocar-diography, the six minute walk distance, renal function, glycosylated hemoglobin and NT-proBNP were assessed at baseline and 1 year after renal denervation. Results Renal artery angiography showed that no stenosis and dissection. After 1 year follow up, the left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), six minute walk distance and NT-proBNP were significantly im-proved, and the size of left ventricular decreased. Conclusion RDN is effective and feasible for the treatment in patients with hypertensive heart disease and systolic heart failure.

Objective To observe the therapeutic efficacy of acupuncture with Ling Gui Ba Fa in treating diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (D-IBS). Methods Sixty D-IBS patients were randomized into a treatment group and a control group, 30 each. The treatment group was intervened by acupuncture by selecting points according to Ling Gui Ba Fa plus Tianshu (ST 25) and Dachangshu (BL 25), while the control group was by oral administration of Pinaverium Bromide. The therapeutic efficacies were compared after 2 treatment courses. Results The markedly-effective rate and total effective rate were respectively 80.0% and 93.3%in the treatment group, versus 50.0%and 80.0%in the control group, and the differences were statistically significant (P＜0.01, P＜0.05). The total effective rates for abdominal bloating, abdominal pain, and diarrhea were respectively 93.3%, 86.7%, and 93.3%in the treatment group, versus 80.0%, 86.7%, and 80.0%in the control group, and the inter-group differences in comparing the total effective rate for abdominal bloating and diarrhea were statistically significant (P＜0.05). Conclusion Acupuncture majorly with Ling Gui Ba Fa is an effective method in treating D-IBS.

BACKGROUND: Various types of collagen affect differentiation and expression of chondrocytes in the process of tissue engineered culture for cartilage. The reliability of cartilage tissue engineering is determined by resource, structure and property of collagen.OBJECTIVE: To characterizing the structure of collagen type Ⅰ,Ⅱ and Ⅲ, to clarify the structural characteristics of collagen for cartilage tissue repairing and provide guidance for choosing cartilage tissue engineering scaffolds. METHODS: The type Ⅰ and Ⅲ collagen was obtained from neonatal calf skins, and type Ⅱ collagen was obtained from porcine articular cartilage. The differences of structures of collagen type Ⅰ,Ⅱ and Ⅲ were analyzed and compared by FTIR, DSC, SDS-PAGE and picrosirius-red staining.RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: The neonatal calf collagen type Ⅰ,Ⅱ and porcine collagen type Ⅱ had the similar functional group. The thermal denaturation temperature of the three type collagen was 104.2 ℃, 99.7 ℃ and 92.5 ℃. SDS-PAGE analysis showed the collagen type Ⅲ percentage in collagen type Ⅰ was (11.29±0.91)%. Picrosirius-red staining exhibited that the collagen type Ⅰ was comprised red and orange raw fibers, with strongly birefringent. Collagen type Ⅲ was lax and thin, greenish fibers, but collagen type Ⅱ was red, loosely cancellated fibers. The functional groups and important characteristics of the three of collagen are similar. However, there are some differences in advanced structure. To analyze the relationships of collagen type Ⅰ,Ⅱ and Ⅲ is important to choose and prepare scaffolds for cartilage tissue engineering.

OBJECTIVETo dynamically assess drug targeting of Yougui Pill (YP) and Zuogui Pill (ZP) using infrared thermography.

METHODSIn this self-control experiment, five healthy volunteers were recruited. By using infrared thermography 10 to 11 thermal images of different body locations were taken from each participant after they took warm water, YP, ZP, and their dissembled prescriptions at 30, 70, 100, 130, and 160 min, respectively. The heat values in the lower quadrant abdomen, uterus, Du channel, and Shenque (CV8) were statistically analyzed after scanning for 125 times.

RESULTSAdministration of YP and its disassembled prescriptions enhanced the heat value of the locations of the Du channel and Shenque (CV8), but did no enhance the heat value of the lower quadrant abdomen at 30 min. Administration of ZP and its disassembled prescriptions reduced the heat value in the locations of the lower quadrant abdomen, uterus, Du channel, and Shenque (CV8) at each time point.

CONCLUSIONThe drug targeting of ZP and YP focused on the locations of the Du channel and Shenque (CV8), not on the locations of the lower quadrant abdomen or uterus.
