Objective To study mutagenic effects of spaceflight on physiological and biochemical parameters of Rhodobacter sphaeroides and select high-yield mutants in co-enzyme Q10(CoQ10) production for providing the experimental and theoretical basis for industrial production through mutagenic effects of spaceflight. Methods Variations in stress resistance and CoQ10 production of isolated strains were studied, the strain Rhodobacter sphaeroides was taken back by a recoverable satellite after 15 d flight in space. Results Compared to the control, the strain was characterized by highter NaCl tolerance and higher stress resistance,as well as with broader scope in growth temperature and pH value after spaceflight. The mutant colonies appeared white or pink which was different from their original red.The CoQ10 production of mutant 10 strain was increased by 73.13% much higher than that of control. Conclusion Spaceflight mutagenic effects on Rhodobacter sphaeroides shows to be multi-factor compared to the traditional single-factor mutagenesis methods. It can enhance stress resistance and increase CoQ10 production of isolated strains, and can be utilized in industrial microbial mutagenesis and breeding in the future.

Chinese Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma 2004;0(07):-
Objective To evaluate retrospectively the causative factors and corresponding surgical treatments of cervical spinal cord injuries without fracture or dislocation. Methods 29 cases of cervical spinal cord injury without fracture or dislocation were studied to analyze their imaging manifestation, features and causative factors of the injury, and pathological elements. Different surgical operations were performed accordingly, and their short-term outcomes were evaluated. Results The analysis indicated that there were chiefly 3 groups of causative factors. About 24% of the patients were typical cervical disc protrusion or prolapse, about 52% of them suffered from obvious decrease or even disappearance of the storing space of spinal canal, and about 24% suffered from decrease of the storing space of spinal canal combined with segmental instability among the vertebras, or with cervical disc prolapse. The postoperative short follow-ups (a mean period of 8.5 months) for the 29 surgical treatments showed that their spinal cord functions had been improved significantly, with the recovery rate being 52.8% by Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA) scoring. Conclusions Despite some common features, the causative factors for the cervical spinal cord injury without fracture or dislocation are quite different. Consequently, in order to achieve satisfactory outcomes, corresponding surgical operations with different approaches should be performed, and proper internal fixation should be applied according to the specific indications.

Objective To examine the correlation between the ultrasonic feature of tibial nerve and the scores of Michi?gan neuropathy screening instrument(MNSI)in type 2 diabetic mellitus (T2DM) and to provide information for early diagno?sis of diabetic peripheral neuropathy(DPN). Methods Based on scores of MNSI, 95 cases of T2DM patients were divided into three different groups:group B(0-2.4 scores), C(2.5-4.4 scores)and D(≥4.5 scores). Ultrasound parameters of group A (n=30) were compared with group B (n=32), group C (n=31) and group D (n=32). These parameters includes nerves′s an?teroposterior dimension, transverse diameter, cross-sectional area and fasciculus echo, thescreen clothstructure, epineuri?um and the demarcation with neighbourhood structures. Correlation of MNSI with ultrasound performance of tibia nerve was also tested. Results Compared with group A, transverse diameter in group B did not show a obvious change, but anteropos?teror dimension, transverse diameter, cross-sectional area in group C, group D all increase.(P < 0.05). Compared with group B,ultrasound alteration were more frequent in group C and group D(P<0.05), but there was no statistical difference on that between group C and group D(P>0.05). There was a positive correlation between the nerves′s anteroposterior di?mension, transverse diameter, cross-sectional area with MNSI, rs were 0.656、0.657 and 0.681 respectively (P<0.05 in all three cases). Conclusion Certain correlation was observed between MNSI and tibial never ultrasonic feature in T2DM pa?tients;the higher MNSI scores , the greater chance of presence of abnormal sonographic features of tibial nerve.

Objective To evaluate the prognostic value of fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) standardized uptake value (SUV) of positron emission tomography (PET) before radiotherapy in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) treated with three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy (3DCRT). Methods Seventy-three patients with stage Ⅲ NSCLC underwent PET to calculate SUV within 2 weeks before 3DCRT. The a-nalysis was carried out after the irradiation of 60 -66 Gy. The possible prognostic factors were assessed by Cox proportional hazards model. Results The mean SUV for squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma and others were 16.94, 14.40 and 6.33, respectively (F = 0. 51, P = 0. 604). The mean SUV for tumor volume less than and more than 50 cm~3 was 13.81 and 20.18 (F = 7.54, P = 0. 008). In the univariate analysis, a cutoff SUV of 17 and chemotherapy were correlated with the prognosis. In the multivariate analysis, SUV was the only independent prognostic factor (relative risk = 2.61). Conclusions SUV is a prognostic factor in patients with NSCLC treated by 3DCRT, which deserves further studies.

Objective To explore the preparation of liposomal clodronate and investigate its inducing effects on the apoptosis of peritoneal macrophages in rats after severe acute pancreatitis (SAP).Methods Liposomal clodronate was prepared by means of thin film. SAP rat model was established by retrograde injection of 5% sodium taurocholate into the pancreatic duct. The peritoneal macrophages were obtained from SAP rats. After exposure to different doses of liposomal clodronate (50, 100,150 μl), the PM proliferation was determined by MTT colourimetry. The apoptosis of PM was measured by flow cytometry and agarose gel electrophoresis, respectively. Results The prepared liposomal clodronate had a suitable encapsulation efficiency of clodronate (5.8%) with an average size of 200 nm. The spherical shape of liposome was confirmed by transmission electron microscope. Exposed to liposomal clodronate of different doses resulted in a obvious growth depression (P<0.01). The apoptotic rate of the PM was (10.32±0.34) %, (18.16±0.49)% and (29.87±0.35)% in three different dose groups and the difference was marked (P<0.01). 1.2% of agarose gel electrophoresis of DNA extracted from apoptotic macrophages induced by liposomal clodronate showed clearer and characteristic ladder following the liposomal clodronate concentration. Conclusion Liposomal clodronate has a definite effect on peritoneal macrophages in SAP rats.
