Background: Tooth decay and gingivitis are common diseases in the world in general and in Vietnam in particular. They occur so early, even shortly after teething. The treatment cost for these diseases is so expensive. Objective: To evaluate the knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) of dental health care of school children aged 12 years old in Dong Da and Thanh Tri districts of Hanoi, 2005. Subjects and method: An epidemiological, cross-sectional, analytical study was conducted in 227 school children aged 12 years old in Dong Da and Thanh Tri districts of Hanoi, from November/2005 to May/2006. Results: Among 227 participants: men were more than female (115 versus 112). 179 participants (78.9%) knew that teeth brushing after main meals was the best method of dental care. 199 (87.7%) knew unclean teeth causing dental caries. 224 (98.7%) knew that eating sweet foods without teeth brushing could lead to tooth decay. 74.8% participants agreed to brush teeth after main meals daily. 88.1% agreed to see the dentist regularly. However, only 49.79% participants brushed their teeth after main meals; 31.3% brushed their teeth after eating or drinking sweet foods. 89% did not gargle their mouth with flour water in school. Conclusion: Behavior and knowledge of dental care of school children were good, but not for practice.

Objective: To investigate the antitumor effect of lactobacillus peptidoglycan (PG) and explore its possible mechanisms. Methods: The inhibition for colon tumor growth, and the influence on the activities of CTL, NK, PM?, IL-1, IL-2, TNF-?, IFN-?and nitric oxide secretion were investigated in mice by cell culture, DNA agrose gel electrophoresis, respectively. Results: Growth in vivo of CT26 colon tumor was significantly inhibited by ip injection of PG. PG also induced significantly the activities of IL-1, TNF-?, IFN-?, CTL, NK, PM?and the production of nitric oxide, but had no effect on the activity of IL-2. Conclusion: The peptidoglycan derived from lactobacillus inhibited the colon tumor growth through activation of murine immunity. The antitumor effect of PG maybe partly if not all, induced, by the enhanced production of IFN-?, TNF-?and NO, through activation of NK cell and PM?. Objective To compare the effect of different ways of water supply and whether or not drain water from waterlines for overnight on bacterial counts in dental unit waterlines(DUWLs).Methods In the first phase,6 sets of DUWLs were randomly divided into 2 groups (external storage tank water supply group and municipal water sup-ply group);in the second phase,6 sets of DUWLs were all changed to use external storage tank and randomly di-vided into 2 groups (draining water for overnight group and without draining water for overnight group),bacterial count before and within one week of disinfection between two groups at two phases were compared respectively. Results In the first phase,handpiece water of DUWLs was most seriously contaminated by bacteria,the average colony count was 4117 CFU/mL,qualified rate was 15.38%.Before disinfection,no significant difference in bacte-rial count were found among each groups (all P>0.05),bacterial count of DUWLs of all groups severely exceeded the standard(all >3000 CFU/mL).Comparison of bacterial count in DUWLs from different water supply routes after disinfection was not significantly different on day 1(P>0.05),but were significantly different at day 2-7(all P<0.05).On the second day after disinfection,municipal water supply group began to exceed bacteria standard;on the third day after disinfection,external storage tank group began to exceed bacteria standard.Bacterial count in DUWLs after disinfection between draining water for overnight group and without draining water for overnight group was no significantly different on day 1(P>0.05),but were significantly different on day 2-7(all P<0.05). On the fourth day of disinfection,bacterial count of without draining water for overnight group exceeded standard.On day 7 of disinfection,bacterial count in draining water for overnight group exceeded>100 CFU/mL.Conclusion Use of external storage tank,daily change of sterile distilled water,and daily emptying water for overnight can effectively reduce bacterial count in DUWLs.

Objective To summarize the experience and the insufficiency of Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital on patent management,and find out the problemsand countermeasures for the management.Methods The authorized patents during 2003-2014 of Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital were analyzed statistically,and the date was overall analyzed combined withthe number,type,content,maintenance and transfer of patent and inventors' educational background,title and subject;and results are further analyzed;Results Patent grant increased significantly more than the invention patent in recent years.In terms of patent types,most patents are utility model patents,and conversion rate of patent outcome is very low.Conclusions Suggestions are proposed to improve hospital patent management:strengthening the guidance of the management of patent policy;promoting patent work;enhancing the professional quality of patent managers;optimizing the patent management processe andstrengthening the patent examination and data analysis;strengthening strategic cooperation among intellectual property management department,patent agency and biological pharmaceutical enterprises.

Objective To compare the clinical effects of 577 nm and 532 nm laser panretinal photocoagulation in the treatment of severe non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR).Methods A prospective,controlled trial was conducted in 42 patients(64 eyes)with severe NPDR,who were randomly divided into 577 nm group and 532 nm group.All of patients received PRP with the single-point model.Preoperative and postoperative 1 day,1 month,3 and 6 months,the best corrected visual acuity (BCVA),fundus,optical coherence tomography (OCT) and full field flash electroretinogram (F-ERG) were examined.After treatment 3 and 6 months,fundus fluorescein angiography (FFA) examination was performed between two groups.Results In 577 nm group and 532 nm group,the average number of laser spot was (1969.25 ± 278.19) and (2098.16 ± 289.27) respectively;average laser power was (425.23 ± 50.15)mW and (438.15 ± 38.48)mW respectively;and average energy density was (7.54 ± 1.54) mW · ms · μm-2 and (7.68 ± 3.01)mW · ms · μm-2.There was no difference in number of laser spot(t =2.68),laser power (t =1.46) and energy density (t =2.15) between the two groups (all P ＞ 0.05),and the differences of macular central thickness after treatment 1 month,3 and 6 months (t =1.98,1.88,1.81 respectively) approached no statistical significance between the two groups (all P ＞ 0.05),while F-ERG a,b wave amplitudes after treatment 1 month,3 and 6 months (a wave:t =5.94,5.19,6.97;b wave:t =5.67,4.56,5.12) had significant differences between groups (all P ＜ 0.05).The effective rate of treating 6 months after operation in the two groups were 87.5％ and 46.9％ respectively,with significant difference (x2 =7.56,P ＜ 0.05).Conclusion 577 nm laser is more effective and has less damage to visual function than 532 nm laser in the treatment of NPDR.

Objective Through investigating the current situation of scientific research in medicine graduate students, we can provide scientific basis for training postgraduates effectively and reference for graduate education reform. Methods A total of 243 medicine graduate students in Drum Tower Hospital were surveyed and asked to complete the designed questionnaires which included general situation, the objective to study, the situation of participation projects, the management of student, and achievements. Results 33.74％ (82) of students' purpose was confusion, 51.44％ of (125) graduate students engaged in clinical and basic research, the scientific research graduate students and doctoral students participated in the tutor research project more than the professional type graduate students and Postgraduate student (P<0.05). There were significant differences in the number of SCI related papers published by the postgraduates who differ in their ways of training and in different degrees (P<0.05). Conclusion Graduate students are an important part of high-level talents in China. They are the successors of future scientific research. The effectiveness of training postgraduates' scientific research ability will directly affect the future scientific research level of the country. So we should strengthen the cultivation of graduate students' scientific research accomplishment, construct a scientific training model, set up scientific training mode and supervision mech-anism, in order to promote the research level of medical graduate students.

Objective To evaluate changes in retinal expression of three heat shock proteins(HSPs)HSP27,HSP70 and HSP90 in normal and experimental glaucomatous rats's retina,and to explore the potential relationship between HSPs with glaucoma optic neuropathy.Design Experimental study.Participants 60 Wistar rats.Methods Rats were randomly divided into ocular hypertension group(n=30)and sham control group(n=30).The right eye was designed as the experimental eye,and the left as the control eyes.Intraocular pressure(IOP)was elevated by using underwater bipolar electro coagulation condensate 3 episcleral and limbal veins on the right eye of rats to establish of animal models of glaucoma.IOP were monitored twice weekly with a Tonopen.In treated eyes,IOP ranged from 27 to 35 mmHg throughout the study.Rats were killed with euthanasia at 10,20,or 60 days following the occurrence of ocular hypertension,with retina dissected free and protein isolated.Protein was used for Western blot analysis and probed with specific HSP antibodies,and normalized to ?-actin levels.Main Outcome Measures IOP,Western bolt.Results Western blot analysis demonstrated that HSP27 protein levels in the retinas were elevated as much as 197% at 10,20 and 60 days following the induction of ocular hypertension.No changes in protein levels were observed for HSP70 or HSP90 in retina from ocular hypertensive eyes.Conclusions The stress protein HSP27 is upregulated in retinas from ocular hypertensive rats.No changes in HSP70 or HSP90 were observed.The upregulation in HSP27 appears to be a gene specific event associated with elevated IOP,its expression may be a potential relationship associated with optic neuropathy in glaucoma.

Objective To compare the accuracy of 64-slice spiral coronary angiography (CTA) and myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) in the detection of functionally relevant coronary artery disease (CAD). Methods Twenty patients diagnosed as CAD and 11 suspected CAD were studied. Both 64-slice spiral CTA and MPI images were analyzed. For the evaluation of CTA,luminal narrowing ≥50% and ＜50% were visually assessed. Perfusion defects on MPI were detected and allocated to their corresponding coronary vessels.Results Among total 124 coronary vessels, CTA detected stenoses ≥50% in 23 arteries, and 7 showed perfusion defects in the corresponding myocardial areas on MPI. Ten of 101 vessels had stenoses＜50%,and no perfusion defects in the corresponding myocardial areas was found on MPI. There was difference between the degree of coronary artery stenoses and the risk probabilities of myocardial ischemia (χ~2=6.667, P=0.01). No statistical difference was detected between the coronary artery stenoses site and the risk probabilities of myocardial ischemia (χ~2=6.839, P=0.065). The sensitivity, specificity, negative and positive predictive values of 64-slice spiral CTA in detecting perfusion defects on MPI was 41.18%, 85.05%, 90.01% and 30.43%, respectively.Conclusion 64-slice spiral CTA can display important morphologic information of coronary arteries, but with a low positive predictive value. MPI can be used as an important method to evaluate the change of heart function resulted from CAD.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the feasibility and the mid-term effects of unilateral pedicle screw fixation and transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion in treating lumbar degenerative diseases.

METHODSFrom August 2005 to May 2010, 56 patients with lumbar degenerative diseases underwent lumbar posterolateral fusion,their clinical data were retrospective analyzed. The patients were divided into two groups (unilateral group and bilateral group) according to fixation methods,27 patients in unilateral group who were underwent unilateral pedicle screw fixation, including 18 males and 9 females with a mean age of (57.5 ± 7.1) years old (ranged from 41 to 66 years); and 29 patients in bilateral group who were treated with bilateral pedicle screw fixation (on the basis of the above, with contralateral vertebral pedicle screw fixation), including 19 males and 10 females with a mean age of (54.6 ± 5.1) years old (ranged from 43 to 68 years). The clinical data such as operation time, blood loss volume, hospitalization time and cost were compared between two groups. JOA score system was used to evaluate the neurological function. And fusion status and cage-related complication were also analyzed.

RESULTSAll patients were followed up from 36 to 60 months with an average of 45.8 months. No iatrogenic nerve, blood vessels or organs injury were found during operation. Operation time, blood loss volume, hospitalization time and cost in unilateral group were better than that of bilateral group (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference in JOA score between two groups (P > 0.05). Two patients in unilateral group developed with cage related complications, 1 case was cage displacement and 1 case was cage subsidence, while 2 patients in bilateral group developed with complications of no-fusion, and there was no significant differences between two groups (P = 0.58).

CONCLUSIONUnilateral pedicle screw fixation is a satisfactory method and can obtain good effects in treating lumbar degenerative diseases in mid-term, however, the indications should be well considered.
