China Journal of Orthopaedics and Traumatology 2013;26(12):1002-1004
OBJECTIVESTo investigate whether tibial intercondylar hyperplasia can cause anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries.
METHODSFrom February 2009 to October 2012, 58 cases (including 70 knees) with knee osteoarthritis (KOA) without trauma history were selected from the out-patient department of orthopaedics in Guang'anmen Hospital attached to China Academy of Chinese Medical Science. All cases were tested by MRI scanning, then vertical height of the medial and lateral intercondylar spine in coronal position and the area of abnormal signal of ACL in sagittal position were tested from patients. Correlation between the height of intercondylar spine and the area of abnormal signal of ACL were analyzed.
RESULTSFives cases of 58 cases( 70 knees) were excluded from episome in knee joint, and other 65 knees were in accordance with the inclusion criteria. Among them, there were 10 males and 48 females aged from 39 to 79 years old with an average of 61 years old. The vertical height of the medial intercondylar spine was (10.02 +/- 1.46) mm and lateral was (8.92 +/- 1.69) mm. The area of abnormal signal ACL was (318.42 +/- 130.10) mm2. There was positive correlation between the height of medial intercondylar spine and the area of abnormal signal of ACL (r=0.06, P=0.00). But there was no correlation between lateral intercondylar spine and the area of abnormal signal of ACL (P=0.10).
CONCLUSIONThe height of medial intercondylar spine and the area of abnormal signal of ACL is positively correlated. The clinical significance is in study, while the clinical meaning still need further study.

Objective To observe the real-time efficacy of balance acupuncture in treating primary hypertension. Method Totally 160 patients with primary hypertension were randomized into a treatment group and a control group, 80 in each group. The treatment group was intervened by balance acupuncture, while the control group was by oral administration of Captopril. The blood pressure and symptom score were observed before and after intervention. Result There were no significant differences in comparing the total effective rate at different time points between the two groups (P>0.05). There was a significant difference in comparing the headache score in male patients at 30 min after treatment between the two groups (P<0.05). Conclusion Balance acupuncture is an effective method in treating primary hypertension, and can release headache of the patients.

Objective To develop an image analyzing procedure for automatic localization of facial features on infrared images. Methods An unsupervised local and global features extraction method was adopted for the localization of facial features of frontal view face image.First,a threshold was used to segment the image into foreground and background, and the nose was localized by considering the symmetry of the face.Second,Harris operator was adopted to detect interest points in a rectangular area covering all the facial features, and then local maximum of the interest points were detected. And finally,K-means clustering method was used to cluster the points and obtain the facial features localization. Results The experimental result of 100 images demonstrated that the procedure could automatically localize eyes, nose, mouth, and distinguish the feature areas. Conclusion The proposed infrared image analyzing procedure based on Harris operator and K-means clustering can be used to locate facial features on infrared image more rapidly and reliablely.

AIM To study protective effect of [D-Ala~2, D-Leu~5]-enkephalin (DADLE) against hydrogen peroxide (H_2O_2) induced myocardial cell injury and its possible mechanisms. METHODS Myocardial cells were isolated from neonatal rats and cultured for 48 h. Then the cells were randomly assigned into normal control, H_2O_2(200 μmol·L~(-1)), H_2O_2+DADLE(1 μmol·L~(-1)), H_2O_2+DADLE +naltrindole(10 μmol·L~(-1)) and H_2O_2+DADLE +U0126(10 nmol·L~(-1)) groups and cultured for another 48 h.[~3H]TdR incorporation assay and flow cytometry were used to measure the cell proliferation and apoptosis rate. The lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activities in culture supernatant measured by using LDH activity kit. The superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and malondialdehyde (MDA) content in cells were measured with xanthine oxidase method and color reaction of thiobarbituric acid, respectively. The expressions of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) and phosphorylated-ERK (p-ERK) were observed with Western blot. RESULTS ① Compared with normal control group, the incorporation of [~3H]TdR in myocardial cells of H_2O_2 group was significantly lower, apoptosis rate was higher, LDH activity and MDA content in cells were higher, while SOD activity in cells was lower. In addition, the ratio of IA_( p-ERK) /IA_( ERK) was decreased. ② Compared with H_2O_2 group, the incorporation of [3H]TdR in H_2O_2+DADLE group was significantly higher, apoptosis rate was lower, LDH activity and MDA content in cells decreased, while SOD activity increased significantly. The ratio of IA_( p-ERK) /IA_( ERK) was increased. ③ δ-Opioid receptor antagonist naltrindole and ERK antagonist U0126 inhibited this effect of DADLE on the above index changes induced by H_2O_2. CONCLUSION The δ-opioid receptor has protective effect against H_2O_2-induced myocardial cell injury, and its possible mechanism may be related to its promotion of antioxide capacity and ERK phosphorylation.

Objective To observe the structural abnormalities of the painful shoulder in patients soon after stroke by M RI,and to identify the possible causes of post-stroke shoulder pain (PSSP).Methods Patients with hemiplegia following their first cerebrovascular accident were divided into 2 groups:PSSP group (32 patients) and post-stroke no shoulder pain (PSNSP) group (20 patients).Physical findings of affected shoulder and MRI findings of both affected and unaffected shoulders were evaluated. Results Shoulder subluxation was significantly more frequent in PSSP group than in PSNSP group (53% vs 15%,P <0.05).In PSSP group, the incidence rate of rotator cuff injury,subacromial-subdeltoid bursa effusion, glenohumeral joint effusion, effusion of long head of biceps tendon was higher in affected side than that in unaffected side(63% vs 13%,53% vs 13%,75% vs 31%,41% vs 13%,respectively).In PSNSP group, the incidence rate of glenohumeral joint effusion was higher in affected side than that in unaffected side (70% vs 17%).But compared with no pain hemiplegic shoulder, only rotator cuff injury and subacromial-subdeltoid bursa effusion were significantly higher in PSSP patients (63% vs15%,53% vs 25%,respectively),and there was significant difference between the two groups (P <0.05).Conclusion Rotator cuff injury was found to be a possible cause of PSSP.

This article was aimed to study the therapeutic effect of Chinese medicine Dai-Xie-A n (DXA) granules a-mong aging rats of metabolic syndrome (MS) in order to evaluate relative indicators and the pathophysiological role in neurons and microvascular injury among aging MS rats. Aging MS rat model was established by feeding high-fat diet and the established model was evaluated. Under the guidance of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) theory, metabol-ic indexes, such as general state of health, glycolipid metabolism, insulin sensitivity, were explored in order to ob-serve effects on brain neurons and microvascular injury among aging MS rats. The results showed that DXA granules can improve glycolipid metabolism among aging MS rats, decrease TC, TG, TC/HDL, decrease the level of blood sug-ar and serum insulin, improve insulin resistance, decrease abdominal fat accumulation, reduce neuronal apoptosis, and increase microvascular angiogenesis. These effects are similar to rosiglitazone. It was concluded that DXA gran-ules can ameliorate glycolipid disorders, protect brain neurons and microvascular injury of aging MS rats.
