This study was undertaken to investigate mineral changes in weathered scalp hair after burial. EDX (energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy) analysis was performed to measure the presence of minerals on the hair surface. Twelve scalp hairs, buried for 5-40 years, were chosen from deceased individuals buried in tombs in Soha-Ri, Kyonggi-Do, and other regions in Korea. Three normal hairs were used as the control group. EDX data showed that carbon, oxygen, and sulfur were detected in hair collected from all three burial grounds. In contrast, calcium was only detected in hair collected from tombs in Soha-ri. The amounts of calcium and sulfur were found to decrease with time for hair collected from tombs in Soha-ri. Similar results were observed with sodium for hair collected from other regions. These results show region specific mineral detection and a decrease in the concentration of minerals with time. Consequently, it is suggested that changes in minerals concentration in weathered hair could be used as basic data in the field of forensic medicine.

The use of osseointegrated implants is an accepted procedure for the treatment of Total, or partial edentulism and offers good predictability of long-term success. Osseointegration implies a firm and direct interlocking between vital bone and screw-shaped titanium implants. There should be not to interposed tissue between fixture and bone. This study was undertaken to assess the clinical condition, complication, and prosthodontic aftercare of different implant systems. One hundred fifty-nine patients treated with a total of 503 endosseous implants (364 Steri-oss threaded type, 69 Integral cylinder with HA coated type, 35 Steri-oss threaded with HA coated type, 21 Steri-oss cylinder with HA coated type and 14 3i implant type), Most of the implant were placed in type B and C bone quantity and type 2 and 3 bone quality according to Lekhorm and Zarb. The success rate of Steri-oss threaded type during healing and function was 92%, Steri-oss threaded type with hydroxyapatite coated was 91%, Steri-oss cylinder type with hydroxyapatite coated was 90%, Integral cylinder type with hydroxyapatite coated was 90% and 3i implant type was 93%. One hundred twenty-nine patients had been treated with implant prosthesis. 79 of these patients had received a fixed type prosthesis and 50 patients had received a removable type prosthesis. There were no differences between the implant systems with regard to age, gender. Failures were associated with poor bone quality, smaller implant sizes, a surgical installation technique and stress distribution when in function. Visual analgoue scales recorded as satisfied results functionally and esthetically, but 15% dissatified with chewing ability.

Hypothalamic hamartomas are often associated with early onset gelastic seizures, precocious puberty, behavioral problem and suboptimal response to antiepiletptic drugs. Until now, four surgical options have been reported to reduce seizure by >50%. Surgical excision have good seizure outcome but postoperative complications were not infrequent, whether by pterional or transcallosal interforniceal approach. Radiosurgery is noninvasive alternative to resective surgery but the effect usually does not appear until several months later. Radiofrequency ablation is less invasive than surgical resection and its effect is immediate, but lacks long term follow-up data. It also requires three dimensional analysis of the lesion to enhance effi cacy and safety. As hypothalamic hamartoma is intrinsically epileptogenic and epileptogenic discharges spread from the lesion, blocking the seizure propagation through endoscopic disconnection is regarded as an effective and safer option. Surgical choice for a particular patient should take into account the hamartoma’s size, location, surgeon’s preferences, possible complication as well as the effect and risk of the various surgical methods. In the present review, open surgery, endoscopic disconnection, radiosurgery and radiofrequency ablation are discussed.

The objective of this experiment is to observe structural differences in the orthodontic movement of vital (control group) and devitalized (experimental group) teeth in the mongrel dogs. The 5 utilized dogs in this experiment were approximately 1 year of age and their average weight was about 12Kg. Endodontic therapy was performed on the 2nd premolars in upper & lower jaws of each animal under the general anesthesia by intravascular injection of 25mg/Kg of pentobarbital sodium. The canals of the teeth were obturated by using gutta percha in conjunction with root canal sealer (AH26 Densply). One of the roots in the 2nd premolars was hemisected to make an extraction space for the devitalized teeth to be moved. The edgewise technique was employed for the movement of the teeth. Orthodontic models and intraoral roentgenograms were taken before and after orthodontic tooth movement. The open coil springs (.010 x .040) were used at interbraket space in order to provide equal forces (75gm) between the teeth in each arch wire. After 13 weeks of active orthodontic tooth movement, dogs were sacrified and the experimental results were examined through the intraoral radiography, microscopic examination and scanning electromicroscopic examination at the root surface. From the results of the study, the following conclusions may be drawn: 1. The root resorption and cemental deposition were observed within the pressure and tension site in both group. 2. The root resorbed lacunae were observed in the cementum and/or into the dentin in both group. 3. The prominent osteoblastic activities were observed on the alveolar margin in the tension site in both group. 4. A few of blood vessels were observed in the pressure site, but also lots of blood vessels were observed in the tension site especially in the periphery of the alveolar bone in both group. 5. In the pressure site, resorbed lacunae were formed with deep and narrow cavity in the control group; the shallow and wide cavity in the experimental group. 6. In the pressure site, the repaired cementum or cementoid tissue was lined on cementum in the experimental group, but not in the control group. 7. There was no significant difference between external root resorption of endodontically and vital teeth when both were subjected to orthodontic forces.

The three-dimensional (3D) printing itself is not a novel technology, it is more than 30 years old. Stereolithographic (SLA) technology has been used as the first and popular technology for medical application of 3D printing. Since 1991 Radiology and Plastic Surgery have published articles about SLA for rapid prototyping anatomical 3D models. Medical applications of 3D printing have been popularizing and stabilizing so far. Implantable medical devices such as metal or absorbable implants, surgical guide systems, prosthesis and orthosis, and 3D anatomical models for normal or diseased anatomy have been developing and expanding its markets so far. There are many obstacles, such as insurance, authorization as a medical device, and lack of standards technology for further expansion of medical applications. Many technical specifications and guidelines for authorization as medical device have been published by regulatory bodies from many countries. Even though international standards for 3D printing have been developing more and more, there have been few standards for medical application of 3D printing. In this harsh environment academia, company, research institute, regulatory bodies, and government have been doing good job for the development of 3D printing industry.

Over 26 kinds of tablets and capsules, such as Tetracycline, Quinidine and Potassium preparations were reported to cause esopbageal ulcerations, eharacterized in various size, shape and number, ind sually in mid-esophagus, Recently authors experienced 10 cases of drug-induced esophageal ulcerations due to antibiotics and antiinflammatory agents such as Tetracycline, Aspirin, etc. Four cases were men and six were women. Four cases were in third dades, three in fourth cleeades, two in fifth decades and one in sixth decades. Presenting symptoras were odynophagia(4/10), dysphagia(3/10), substernal pain(7/10) and epigastric pain(3/10). Endoscopic examination of the esophgus showed single or multiple, small and shallow ulcers on the mid-esophgeal mucosa at the level of 30cm from the ineisor in eight cases, one Iarge and deep ulcer at the level of 40cm from incisor in one patient and one amall, shallow and one large, deep ulcers at the same time. in one patient The shape of alcers were various from a round to a large horseshoe shaped one. The clinical course was mild without complications. It was suggested that drug-induced esophsgeal ulcers with antibiotics and antiinflammatory agents could be found frequently and they had benign and mild clinicalc ourse,

STUDY DESIGN AND OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the descriptive patterns of radiating leg pain due to lumbar herniated intervertebral disc, and the correlation between the patterns and various factors such as age, gender, occupation, education, duration of symptom, straight leg raising test, and degree of disc herniation on magnetic resonance imaging. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred and three patients who had lower back pain and radiating leg pain were diagnosed with lumbar herniated intervertebral disc. We investigated the descriptions of their radiating leg pain, and standardized and classified 44 adjective words to 11 groups by the Korean McGill pain questionnaire. We analyzed the frequencies of each word and the correlation between the frequencies and the various factors. RESULTS: The pattern of pain descriptions tended to exhibit certain characteristic traits. The word 'flashing' was the most common (72.8%), followed by the word 'jerking'(62.1%). Descriptions of most patients included either the word 'flashing' or 'jerking'(92.2%). However, there was no significant relation between the frequencies of each word and any factors (p>0.05, chisquare). CONCLUSIONS: The pattern of patients' descriptions for radiating pain of lumbar herniated intervertebral disc is either the word 'flashing'or 'jerking'. This is a useful description to diagnosis and plan for the treatment of lumbar herniated intervertebral disc.
