1.EFFECT OF EXERCISE-INDUCED CHANGE IN PREFERENCE FOR SUCROSE SOLUTION ON POST-EXERCISE RECOVERY OF BODY FLUID AND GLYCOGEN IN RATS
Japanese Journal of Physical Fitness and Sports Medicine 2008;57(5):533-540
We investigated whether preference for sucrose solution changes after exercise and whether the change influences post-exercise recovery of body fluid and glycogen. Rats were individually housed in cages equipped with 2 bottles containing water and either a 0.4%, 2%, 4 % or 8 % sucrose solution. The rats had free access to the water and sucrose solution for 6 h on both the day before (Pre) and the day of 2 h treadmill exercise (Ex). Fluid intake was measured. We also measured tissue weight, tissue water and tissue glycogen after 6 h recovery. Compared to Pre, voluntary fluid intake on Ex significantly decreased for 2 % and 4 % solutions, whereas it did not change for 0.4% and 8 %. After 6h of fluid ingestion, the content of tissue water and glycogen was highest for 8 % among the solutions. These results demonstrate that 8 % was effective in rehydration and tissue glycogen recovery after exercise, since its voluntary intake did not decrease after exercise.

It is known that uterine cervical cancer is caused by persistent infection with high-risk type of HPV (human papilloma virus). We have run HPV genotyping tests on patients since November, 2011. In 111 cases so far examined, HPV types 16, 52 and 58 were detected with high frequency, but type 18 was with low frequency. This trend was comparable to nationwide tendency. Type 52, 56 and 58 were detected from the patients of advanced age frequently. There weredifferences in HPV infection rate between cytology-negative cases and positive cases, but there was not the difference in HPV typing by cytology-negative and positive patients. Furthermore, it was made clear that the superinfection of HPV who significantly related to the development of tumor. In the cytology negative patients who were followed up because of dysplasia, there are many who are negative for high risk HPV. Therefore, HPV genotyping examination may help physicians determine the relative priority for treatment.

1) All students but 1 correctly typed the ABO blood groups, but only 33.2% of students and 63.9% of physicians properly performed cross-matching.
2) Most failures in cross-matching were due to the inability to detect allogeneic antibodies, but 5.2% of students and 2.9% of physicians failed to detect ABO mismatching.
3) Although laboratory practice is suggested to help students to solidify knowledge and comprehend principles, achieving an official goal of residency - gaining competence in performing and interpreting cross-matching independently - appeared difficult.

From January 1987 to October 1992, 60 consecutive patients operated on for infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) were reviewed to evaluate the effect of previous laparotomies giving on the results of aneurysmal surgery. Eleven of 60 patients had previous laparotomies. Two of them required emergency operation for ruptured aneurysms. One of them died during surgery as a result of excessive hemorrhage prior to cross-clamping the aorta. Severe peritoneal adhesion had made if difficult to properly expose the aorta for cross-clamping to control hemorrhage. There were no statistical significance in mortality between the previous laparotomy and non-laparotomy groups. Excluding ruptured cases, we compared the previous laparotomy group (9 patients) and non-laparotomy group (37 patients) with reference to perioperative factors, including operation time, blood loss, non-oral feeding days, bed-ridden days, and hospital stay but there were no statistically significant differences. These results suggested that previous laparotomy is not a serious risk factor in operations for AAA.
