The Filipino Family Physician 2021;59(2):329-333
Background:
Medical research is undoubtedly an essential tool in improving health care. Thus, every resident physician should participate in health research activities to keep his knowledge and training up-to-date. Although research is incorporated in residency training, several studies have shown that much is still lacking in terms of the residents’ knowledge, attitude, and practices in research.
Objective:
To determine the knowledge, attitude, practices, and barriers in conducting research among resident physicians in Cagayan Valley Medical Center.
Methods:
This study utilized a descriptive survey design. Purposive sampling with total enumeration was done. A total of 108 resident trainees were included in the study. Validated questionnaires were used to assess the residents’ knowledge, attitude, practices, and barriers in conducting research.
Results:
The level of research knowledge of the resident trainees is below average, and their overall research practice is poor. On the contrary, the residents’ attitude towards research is positive. The residents’ level of research knowledge significantly differed across age (p=0.010) and year level (p=0.012). The trainees’ research attitude significantly differed in terms of current involvement in research (p=0.048). The top three barriers identified were lack of research training and skills, insufficient time allotted for research, and lack of statistical support.
Conclusion
There is a need to fill the gap between the residents’ positive attitude and their below average level of knowledge and poor practice in research. Addressing the barriers in conducting research is also needed to improve the overall standards of research among the residents.

8.Evaluation of the knowledge, attitude, and practice of food hygience of housewife and servers in restaurant in Hanoi.
Journal of Practical Medicine 2002;435(11):15-19
A total of 200 housewives at home and street vendors were interviewed by using structured questionnaires, the result has indicated the insufficient knowledge of food safety, most of them never had lessons in food handling practices. The environmental sanitary condition and food handling practices at home were better than at the street side. Stagnant wastes were found around 59% of the selling places of street vendors. 71% street foods prepared 2 hours before. Contacted foods with bare hands usually during street food preparation (89%). The practices and knowledge of food safety should be encouraged. A training guide gives clear information on how food becomes contaminated and on the measures that should be taken to avoid such contamination is essential.

9.Knowledge and attitude on the nurse practitioner role of nurses and physicians in two tertiary hospitals in Metro Manila
Philippine Journal of Nursing 2020;90(1):3-7
The role of the nurse practitioner (NP) has been successfully implemented globally including in some Southeast Asian countries. However, the Philippines has yet to enact this expanded role, not with standing being faced with the common factors influencing the evolution of the NP role indicated in the literature. With the proposed repeal of the current Philippine Nursing Law to include Advanced Practice Nursing, this study aimed to determine the knowledge and attitudes of nurses and physicians in the Philippines on the NP role. Sixty-six participants (41 nurses and 25 physicians) completed the survey on the knowledge and attitude on the NP role, conducted in two tertiary-level hospitals in Manila. Nurses have statistically higher scores on items regarding general understanding of the NP role, and on the difference of the NP from senior nurses. However, the difference of overall survey scores on the knowledge and attitude on the NP role between nurses and physicians was statistically non-significant. These results support the need to raise awareness on the role of the NPs by educating nurses, physicians, and other healthcare professionals in the Philippine setting.

Carlos Diego A. Rozul ; Ernesto R. Gregorio, Jr. ; Charlotte M. Chiong
Acta Medica Philippina 2020;54(2):134-141
Objective:
The study describes the current knowledge, attitudes, and practices of healthcare practitioners in Rizal province regarding the implementation of the universal newborn hearing screening program (UNHSP).
Materials and Methods:
A descriptive phenomenologic research design through focus group discussions with pediatric and OBGYN consultants in a government hospital, nurses from private primary and secondary hospitals, midwives from private birthing homes, and rural health workers
Results:
Attitudes. All participants recognized that they had important roles in implementing the program except the OBGYN consultants as they felt that information about the UNHSP should be provided by pediatricians. Practices. The lack of a screening device, trained personnel, and a referral network were the most common barriers in implementing the program. Knowledge. Most participants lacked specific knowledge about hearing loss and its implications in the UNHSP.
Conclusion
Most participants were able to determine the advantages and disadvantages of implementing the UNHSP. However, less than half of the participants admitted to have an established protocol to give access to newborn hearing screening services. Establishment of an information dissemination protocol and materials may be beneficial in the absence of funding for screening devices.
