The relationship between body fat growth and physical fitness and motor ability development in school age children is not well understood. We determined the similarities and differences in body fat growth and physical fitness and motor ability development curves by applying cross correlation functions, and attempted to show the structure of growth and development between these attributes. The subjects were 647 boys aged 7 to 15 years. The measurements were height, weight, body mass index and body fat percentage as physical characters; and 20-m sprint, Pro Agility test, side steps, standing long jump, vertical jump, and rebound jump (RJ) index as physical fitness and motor ability. The wavelet interpolation method was applied to growth and distance values for physique, body fat and physical fitness and motor ability, and growth and development curves were derived. Cross correlation functions were then applied to the respective pairs of the compared velocity curves. There were large changes in the behavior of the growth velocity curve around the take off age for height, and so the relationship between body fat percentage and physical fitness and motor ability was investigated using the respective cross correlation functions around the take off age. Before the take off age, positive correlations were seen between body fat percentage and physical fitness and physical fitness and motor ability except for the RJ index. After the take off age, in contrast, there were negative correlations between body fat percentage and physical fitness and motor ability except for the RJ index. These results show the new finding that after the take off age in boys, there are contrary similarity between body fat and speed, agility, and instantaneous force.
2.Efficacy of Two-Stage Surgery for Spinal Cord Ependymomas

Methods:
We retrospectively reviewed patients diagnosed with spinal ependymomas who underwent tumor resection in our institution. We obtained data regarding patients’ clinical characteristics, tumoral radiological characteristics, and surgical factors and compared them to clear prognostic factors. Two-stage surgery was performed in 11 patients (36.7%), and single surgery was performed in 19 patients (63.3%).
Results:
Thirty patients were included in the analyses and divided into two groups: single surgery and two-stage surgery groups. In the single surgery group, high tumor–cord ratio (TCR) and intraoperative motor evoked potential (MEP) reduction were significantly correlated with unfavorable outcomes, which were defined as deterioration of the modified McCormick scale grades 2 months and 1 year postoperatively. Alternatively, these factors were not significantly correlated with postoperative unfavorable outcomes in the two-stage surgery group. Receiver operating characteristic curves indicated that TCR of 0.866 yielded 85.7% sensitivity and 83.3% specificity 2 months postoperatively.
Conclusions
The results suggested that high TCR might be an indication of two-stage surgery and that its cutoff value is 0.866. Moreover, switching from single surgery to two-stage surgery may prevent postoperative neurological deterioration when intraoperative MEP is decreasing.
3.Impact of the Sensitivity to Empiric Antibiotics on Clinical Outcomes after Biliary Drainage for Acute Cholangitis

Background/Aims:
Empiric antibiotics are given in combina-tion with biliary drainage for acute cholangitis but sometimes turn out to be insensitive to microorganisms in blood and bile. Clinical outcomes were compared according to sensitiv-ity to microorganisms detected in blood and bile culture to evaluate the impact of sensitivity to empiric antibiotics in cholangitis.
Methods:
Consecutive patients who underwent biliary drainage for acute cholangitis were retrospectively studied. Clinical outcomes such as 30-day mortality, length of hospital stay and high care unit stay, organ dysfunction and duration of fever were compared in three groups: group A (sensitive to both blood and bile culture), group B (sensitive to blood culture alone) and group C (insensitive to both blood and bile culture).
Results:
Eighty episodes of cholangitis were classified according to sensitivity results: 42, 32 and six in groups A, B and C. Escherichia coli and Klebsiella were two major pathogens. There were no significant differences in 30-day mortality rate (7%, 0%, and 0%, p=0.244), length of hospital stay (28.5, 21.0, and 20.5 days, p=0.369), organ dysfunction rate (14%, 25%, and 17%, p=0.500), duration of fever (4.3, 3.2, and 3.5 days, p=0.921) and length of high care unit stay (1.4, 1.2, and 1.7 days, p=0.070) in groups A, B and C. Empiric antibiotics were changed in 11 episodes but clinical outcomes appeared to be non-inferior even in 31episodes of cholangitis who were on inadequate antibiotics throughout the course.
Conclusions
Sensitivity of empiric antibiotics was not associated with clinical outcomes in acute cholangitis.
