Objective To observe the effects of chemo-endocrine therapy on gastric carcinoma (GC). Methods Cancerous tissues from 95 patients with primary GC were examined for the presence of estrogen receptor (ER) and progesterone receptor (PgR). Afterwards, 64 GC patients with recurrent or metastatic conditions were randomly divided into two groups: chemotherapy group and chemo-endocrine therapy group. Results A total of 34.38% ER positive and 16.30% PgR positive rates were found. For ER positive patients, the use of tamoxifen-EAP regimens was more effective than that of EAP alone (P

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effect of antiviral agents in treating of severe acute respiratory syndrome(SARS). METHODS Based on the particular data (including medical history, examiuations and treatments) of 1702 patients of with SARS which were offered by the Health Bureau of Guangdong Province, the inpact factors of death and the course of diseases of SARS were retrospectively analyzed with unifactorial and multifactors statistic analysis methods. RESULTS It did not show any signs that the death rate could be decreased by the six antiviral agents in common use,but vidarabine could help to shorten the course of disease(OR=1.399,P=0.025),while oseltamivir might be prolonged the course of disease(OR=0.708,P=0.000). CONCLUSIONS The data showed that the effect of the six antiviral agents for curing SARS is limited, and a new antiviral treatment for SARS should be explored further.

Objective To examine whether the two vascular paracrine/autocrine factors, angiotensin Ⅱ (Ang Ⅱ) and endothelin, participate in the pathogenesis of arterial calcification. Methods Nicotine and vitamin D3 treated rats were studied. Vascular calcification was confirmed by using Von Kossa staining, measurement of calcium content,45Ca2+ uptake assay and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity. The plasma and vascular Ang Ⅱ and endothelin levels were measured by using radioimmunoassay. Angiotensinogen and endothelin mRNA levels were determined by RTPCR. Results The arterial calcium content, 45Ca2+ uptake and ALP activity were increased in calcification groups compared with control ( P < 0.01 ). Administration of the angiotensin receptor antagonist losartan, the endothelin receptor antagonist bosentan, and the angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor captopril reduced significantly the arterial calcium content, 45Ca2+ uptake and ALP activity. In addition, the plasma and aortic Ang Ⅱ and endothelin contents, and vascular angiotensinogen and endothelin mRNA expression were significantly up-regulated ( P <0.05).Conclusions These findings suggest that functional renin-angiotensin system and endothelin pathway are involved in vascular calcification, and that activation of these systems could potentiate pathogenesis of arterial calcification. OBJECTIVETo investigate the synergistic effect of transforming growth factor-beta1 (TGF-beta1) and platelet-derived growth factor-BB (PDGF-BB) on the expression of integrin beta3, in periodontal membrane of rat orthodontic tooth.
METHODSAn orthodontic tooth movement model was established. Up to 32 experimental rats were randomly divided into four groups according to a random number table. The four groups were injected with 1% PBS, TGF-beta1 (5 ng), PDGF-BB (10 ng), and combined TGF-beta1 (5 ng) and PDGF-BB (10 ng) in the buccal submucosal, respectively. The volume injected in each group was 0.1 mL. The animals were then sacrificed on the 10th day. The left maxillary first molar and periodontal tissue were taken. Different expressions of integrin beta3 were detected in periodontal tissues through immunohistochemistry. Mean optical density (OD) values of the positive fields were examined. The data obtained were analyzed through ANOVA. The data followed normal distribution, and were compared via t-test.
RESULTSCompared with the control groups, the expression of integrin beta3 was higher in the experimental groupin tension sides (P < 0.01). Significant differences in tension sides between the single-injection groups and the combined group were observed (P < 0.01). Compared with the control groups, the expression of integrin beta3 was higher in the experimental group in compression sides (P < 0.05). In addition, there was no significant differences in compression sides between the single-injection groups and the combined group (P > 0.05).
CONCLUSIONIn terms of local regulatory factors, TGF-beta1 combined with PDGF-BB enhance the expression of integrin beta3 in the periodontal membrane and accelerate periodontal remodeling. The synergistic effect of the two growth factors is better than the single growth factor.
