Journal of Biomedical Engineering 2013;30(6):1147-1152
Neural mass models are able to produce epileptic electroencephalogram (EEG) signals in different stages of seizures. The models play important roles in studying the mechanism analysis and control of epileptic seizures. In this study, the closed-loop feedback control was used to suppress the epileptic-form spikes in the neural mass models. It was expected to provide certain theory basis for the choice of stimulus position and parameter in the clinical treatment. With the influence of measurement noise taken into account, an unscented Kalman filter (UKF) was added to the feedback loop to estimate the system state and an UKF controller was constructed via the estimated state. The control action was imposed on the hyper-excitable population and all populations respectively in simulations. It was shown that both UKF control schemes suppressed the epileptic-form spikes in the model. However, the control energy needed in the latter scheme was less than that needed in the former one.

Objective To investigate the conditions of family function of rehabilitative breast cancer patients and its related factors. Methods Self-administrated questionnaire and the family APGAR (adaptation, partnership, growth, affection, resolve) index questionnaire were used in 245 breast cancer patients to investigate their general and illness information, and their family APGAR index. The factors relat-ed with the family function of breast cancer patients were analyzed. Results The APGAR score of the participants was (7.51±1.17), and the condition of family was graded from good (73.5%), moderate impairment (21.2%) to severs impairment (5.3%). The multiple regression analysis found that the stage of the disease (β=-9.671), the condition of marriage (β=8.29) and their social activities (β=7.402) related with the APGAR index in rehabilitative breast cancer patients. Conclusion The family function needs attention, especially the metastasis ones in breast cancer patients. A healthy marriage and beneficial socialization contribute to keep good family function.

Objective To explore the effects of group psychotherapy on breast cancer patients. Methods 80 outpatients with breast cancerwho did not participate in the Rukang Salon (control group) and 100 outpatients participated (intervention group) were surveyed withquestionaire. Results The incidence of psychological distress was 36.8% in the control group and 21.1% in the intervention group ( χ2=5.02,P=0.03). In the intervention group, the efficacy of those without psychological distress (236.86±35.17) was significantly higher than thosewith psychological distress (214.21±26.52), (t=2.61, P=0.01). There were significant differences in those 5 factors: group cohesion, universality, interpersonal learning, guide instructions, and hope remodeling. Top 5 factors in scores reported were interpersonal learning, hopingremodeling, group cohesion, guide instructions, and exist consciousness. Conclusion Group psychotherapy can significantly reduce the psychologicaldistress in rehabilitating breast cancer patients. Group cohesion, universality, interpersonal learning, guide instructions, hope remodelingand exist consciousness may play important roles.

Chinese Journal of Rehabilitation Theory and Practice 2009;15(5):461-463
Objective To investigate the family burden from behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) in patients with Alzheimer disease (AD) living at home and in nursing home. Methods Neuropsychiatric Inventory/Neuropsychiatric Inventory-Nursing Home (NPI) and Family Burden Interview Scale (FBIS) were used to measure the occurrence of BPSD in 200 AD patients. The data were analyzed. Results In-home patients' total score and family daily activities, family entertainment, family relationships, family members' mental health and the body healthy dimension scores of FBIS were significantly higher ( P<0.05), and the dimension scores of economic burden were significantly lower ( P<0.01) than those of patients in nursing home. Patients' total score of NPI was positively correlated with the economic burden, family entertainment, family relationships, family members' mental health and the body healthy dimension scores of FBIS ( P<0.01). Every dimension score of NPI and total score of FBIS positively related ( P<0.05). Dimension score of family daily activities of FBIS was not related to all of the dimension scores and total score of NPI ( P>0.05).Conclusion The family burden from BPSD should not be ignored, especially the patients living at home, which suggests that AD patients should be sent to nursing home to spend their rest life.

Objective To investigate the protective effect of Buyang Huanwu Decoction ( BYHWD) on PC12 cell apoptosis induced by oxygen-glucose deprivation ( OGD) and to screen out the main ingredients of BYHWD on protecting PC12 cell from injury induced by OGD. Methods Seven herbs of BYHWD were selected as the influencing factors, and they were Radix Astragali, Radix Paeoniae Rubra, the carda part of Radix Angelicae Sinensis, Pheretima Asiatica, Rhizoma Chuanxiong, Semen Persicae, and Flos carthami. Two levels were designed for each factor, and the experiment was arranged according to L8 ( 27) orthogonal test table. Apoptosis of PC12 cells induced by OGD was detected by serum pharmacology method and flow cytometry techniques. With apoptotic rate as the evaluation index, visual analysis and variance analysis were used for the comparison of apoptosis of PC12 cells in the blank control group ( oxygen + sugary medium + blank serum) , model group (oxygen-glucose-free medium + blank serum) and drug groups (oxygen-glucose-free medium +serum containing BYHWD or the separate recipe of BYHWD ) . Results Compared with the blank control group, apoptotic rate was increased in PC12 cells of the model group, the difference was statistically significant ( P<0.01) . Compared with the model group, the apoptotic rate was decreased in BYHWD group, and the differences was statistically significant (P<0.01) . The results of orthogonal analysis showed that Semen Persicae, Flos carthami and Radix Paeoniae Rubra were the main active ingredients of BYHWD on depressing apoptosis of PC12 cell induced by OGD ( P<0.01). The apoptotic rate of serum containing the prescription with Radix Paeoniae Rubra was lower than that of the prescription without Radix Paeoniae Rubra. Conclusion BYHWD could inhibit OGD-induced PC12 cell apoptosis, and Radix Paeoniae Rubra is the main active herb on depressing apoptosis in BYHWD.
