Microbiology 1992;0(03):-
In order to enhance the survival rate of abalone larvae, antibiotic susceptibility tests were performed on the bacteria isolated from whitened postlarvae, biofilm and the pond water of abalone (Haliotis diversicolor superteta) and proven to be virulent pathogens by challenge tests. API tests indicated that the isolates were mainly comprised of Vibrio alginolyticus, vibrio cholerae, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, the total Vibrio number of which was seventeen and made up about 50% of the total population. Among vibrios, Vibrio alginolyticus was the dominant strain (11 isolates) and made up 70%. Antibiotic susceptibility tests demonstrated that while majority isolates exhibited relatively high sensitivities toward streptomycin, erythromycin and gentamycin, they nevertheless displayed resistance to tetracycline and novobiocin. Results clearly indicated that streptomycin, erythromycin and gentamycin could be potentially used to suppress vibrio growth and hence improve abalone postlarval survival rate.

OBJECTIVETo explore the effect of half circle external fixation for the treatment of open tibial fractures.
METHODSFrom March 2005 to March 2011, 94 patients with open tibiofibula fractures were treated by closed manipulative or Kirschner-wire poking reduction with half circle groove external fixation including 63 males and 31 females with an average age of 39 years old ranging from 17 to 65 years old. Among these patients, 5 cases were cross shaped fractures, 19 were oblique form and spiral fractures, 70 cases were comminuted fractures. According to the fracture Gustilo classification, 49 cases were type IIIA, 45 were type IIIB. The incidence of wound infection, fracture healing time were observed. The function was evaluated according to the Johner-Wruhs standard.
RESULTSAll patients were followed up for 14 to 63 months (averaged 29 months). The wound healing time was from 16 to 39 weeks (means 21.4 weeks). No fracture nonunion, osteomyelitis and calf compartment syndrome occurred. The wounds of 81 cases were healed at the first period, deep wound infection occurred in 2 cases. According to the function Johner-Wruhs evaluation criteria:the result was excellent in 52 cases, good in 37 cases, fair in 5 cases.
CONCLUSIONClosed manipulative or Kirschner-wire poking reduction and half circle groove external fixation can reduce the infection rate of open tibiofibula fractures. For open tibiofibula comminuted fractures, after the half circle groove external fixation for 3 to 6 weeks, a middle Kirschner-wire was removed according to fracture end healing situation to make fixation dynamic and promote fracture healing.

Objective To evaluate systematically whether administration of hypertonic saline transfusion affects clinical outcomes with compared to standard fluid in the early stage of resuscitation for traumatic shock patients. Methods Seven English and Chinese routine biology and medicine databases were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published from January 2002 to August 2012,and established inclusion and exclusion criteria to evaluate these RCTs.The quality assessment was based on the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions Version 5.0.1 and Jadad' s score scale.RevMan 5.0 statistical software was used for meta-analysis.Results After evaluated 211 related literatures, five RCTs met all the inclusion criteria and were enrolled for meta-analysis.The meta-a nalysis demonstrated that early hypertonic transfusion did not decrease short-term (first 48 hours after admission) mortality (RR =1.04,P =0.74); nor did it decrease later-term (7day to 3month after injury) mortality (RR =0.97,P =0.72).It also did not decrease the total volume of fluid and blood transfusion required during the first day (P =0.38).Similarly,it did not affect the incidents of infections (RR =1.04,P =0.70),the length of stay in ICU (P =0.2) and total length of stay in the hospital. Conclusions Compared to standard fluid, there was no advantage on mortality and hospital infection by using hypertonic supplement transfusion in the early stage of resuscitation for traumatic shock patients.Hypertonic transfusion did not have any significant effect on the volume of total fluid and blood transfusion required the first day,and no trend of reduction for the length of ICU and hospital stay.Further well-designed randomized controlled trials are needed to demonstrate the cost effectiveness of hypertonic transfusion to traumatic shock patients while in ICU.

Objective To evaluate the clinical values of dual energy lung perfusion using dual-source CT. Methods Fifty-four patients who underwent chest contrast-enhanced CT were included in this study from May to August in 2007. Dual energy CT scanning was performed in all patients. The patients were divided into four groups: normal group, exudation lesion group, mass lesion group, and pulmonary embolism group. Imaging appearances of dual energy CT perfusion in four groups were analyzed. Results Dual energy CT showed symmetrical homogeneous perfusion in healthy subjects (n = 14), exudation lesions (n =10) appeared as low perfusion, In mass lesions (n =27), peripheral masses presented as local perfusion defect, central masses appeared as segmental perfusion defect because of the involvement of hilar vessels, and pulmonary embolism (n = 3) appeared as perfusion defect in corresponding pulmonary segment. Conclusion Dual energy CT scanning can be used to show the pulmonary perfusion status and assess the pulmonary perfusion abnormalities in central lung cancer and pulmonary embolism.

OBJECTIVETo detect the in-vitro effects of arbidol hydrochloride against 2009 new influenza virus A (H1N1).
METHODSThe activity of arbidol hydrochloride against 2009 new influenza virus A (H1N1) was determined in MDCK cell cultures. Hemagglutination assay, observation of cytopathic effects, RT-PCR and quantitative RT-PCR tests were performed for determination of virus titers. Inhibition concentration 50% and cytotoxic concentration 50% were calculated with Chou's Menu of Dose-Effect Program.
RESULTSArbidol hydrochloride showed low cytotoxicity (cytotoxic concentration 50%>100 μmol/L)and significant anti-2009 new influenza virus A (H1N1) activity in cell cultures. Inhibition concentration 50% were (5.5 ± 0.9), (3.4 ± 0.8), and (1.5 ± 0.2) μmol/L in hemagglutination assay, cytopathic effect test, and quantitative RT-PCR assay, respectively.
CONCLUSIONArbidol has low cytotoxicity and high anti-virus activity and can effectively trigger the activities of interferon and immune response, and therefore can be a valuable anti-influenza virus drug.

Microbiology 1992;0(05):-
Integrins are a family of cell surface glycoproteins that contribute to a variety of biological functions, including cell growth, migration, proliferation and morphology. In addition, integrins also play the important roles in pathological process. Several viruses have been showed to use integrins as receptors or co-receptors to infect host cells. This article mainly reviews the progress on integrins and their roles in FMDV infection.

Microbiology 1992;0(04):-
Receptors are primary determinant of viral tropism and disease pathogenesis.Heparan sulfates (HS)are ubiquitous, polyanionic carbohydrate chains linked to core proteins in cell membranes and ex- tracellular matrices of all eukaryotes.HS have also been demonstrated to function as receptors or co-receptors for a number of different viruses. To date,HS and four RGD-dependent integrins,?v?3,?v?6, ?v?1,and?v?8 have been reported to serve as receptors for Foot-and-mouth disease virus(FMDV).Different receptors may be used to interact with host cells during FMDV infection.Studies on the structure and function of receptors are very important for understanding the interaction between host cells and FMDV. Here,We mainly reviews the progress on the biological characteristics of HS and its roles in FMDV infection.
