Objective To investigate the effects of Propofol in blood spinal cord barrier (BSCB) disruption induced by spinal cord ischemia reperfusion injury (SCIRI). Methods 72 Japanese white rabbits were randomly assigned into 3 groups: sham-operation group (S); ischemia/reperfusion group (I/R) and Propofol treatment group (I/R + P). The Group S was separated the aorta without cross-clamping. SCIRI was induced in rabbits by infrarenal aortic occlusion for 30 minutes. Propofol was intravenously infused at 10 minutes before aortic clamping and at onset of reperfusion in the Group I/R + P. The Group S and Group I/R were intravenously infused 0.9%sodium chloride. Hind-limb motor function was assessed using Tarlov criteria, and histological observation by histological examination. The permeability of the BSCB was examined using EB as vascular tracers. The expression of MMP-9, claudin-5 and NF-κB were assessed by Western blot, RT-PCR. Results Propofol minimized the neuromotor dysfunction and histopathological deficits and attenuated EB extravasation. In addition, Propofol suppressed SCIRI-induced increase of MMP-9 and NF-κB. Finally, Propofol reduced the loss of claudin-5. Conclusion Propofol stabilizes the BSCB integrity after SCIRI. This beneficial effect is partly mediated by inhibition of MMP-9 and preservation claudin-5 and relates to inhibiting the NF-κB signal pathway.

Objective To investigate the acoustic characteristics of the voice of 3~6 years old children with hearing-impairment. Methods The voice samples were collected from 148 hearing-impaired children and 122 normal children, all aged 3~6 years. The acoustic parameters including F0, F0SD, jitter, shimmer, NNE, OQ, SQ, AQ, STF were compared. Results The F0, SQ, STF, F0SD, jitter were more in the children with hearing-impairment than in the normal children (P<0.05). There was no significant difference between hearing-impairment and normal children in shimmer, NNE, OQ and AQ (P>0.05). There was no significant difference of all the acoustic parameters among children with different ages (P>0.05), except the NNE was less in 3~4 years old children than 5~6 years old children (P<0.05). There was no significant difference of all the acoustic parameters between boys and girls (P>0.05). Conclusion The vibration of vocal cords is instable and irregular, saying overquick and close intensely in hearing-impaired children. The age and sex do not influence the acoustic parameters, except NNE is less in younger children.

BACKGROUND:In recent years, there are many animal studies and osteoblast studies on the anti-osteoporotic effects of puerarin, a kind of phytoestrogen. But few of them are reported on the effects of puerarin on osteoblasts in older patients with osteoporosis. OBJECTIVE: To observe the influence of puerarin on the proliferation ofin vitro cultured osteoblasts from older female patients with osteoporosis. METHODS:The older female patients with osteoporotic femoral neck fractures who underwent artificial femoral head replacement were included in this study. The femoral neck cancelous bone removed during the operation was colected. Primary cancelous bone osteoblasts were cultured using explant culture method. The cels were sub-cultured to the required amounts. Osteoblasts from the control group were cultured with culture medium without puerarin. Osteoblasts from the 0.01, 0.1, and 1 μmol/L puerarin groups were cultured with culture medium containing the corresponding concentrations of puerarin. After in vitro co-culture with different concentrations of puerarin for 1, 3, 5 days, the proliferation of osteoblasts was observed. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:With the increase in the concentration of puerarin, the proliferative activity of
osteoblasts constantly increased at different time points (P < 0.05). At 3 days of culture, cel absorbance value in each group reached the peak level. These results suggest that 0.01, 0.1, 1μmol/L puerarin promotes the proliferation of osteoblasts in older patients with osteoporosis in a concentration-dependent manner.

Objective To observe the morphological changes of rats' pancreas and nitric oxide (NO) and endothelin(ET) in the blood serum in rats after exposure to different pulses of high power pulse microwave (HPPMW).Methods SD-rats were irradiated with 104,105 and 4 × 105 pulses of HPPMW,respectively. After gloss observation, the histopathological changes of pancreas were observed through biological microscope and electroscope. The changes of amylase, nitric oxide and endothelin in blood serum were detected by biochemical and radio-immunological methods. Results Compared with the blank control,no apparent abnormality could be observed in the pancreas of all groups. The dilatation of capillary could be observed in each experimental group by microscope. The ultrastructure changes of pancreas were most serious in 4 × 105 pulse group, especially at 24 and 48 h after irradiation.Compared with the control group, the levels of serum amylase were decreased (F =12.58,11.73,P < 0.05),while ET were increased (F =4.50,4.49,P <0.05) at 24 and 48 h after irradiation. The levels of NO in serum were increased ( F =17.51,41.72,19.98,32.64,P < 0.05 ) at each time-point.The level of NO went up with the increase of pulses. Conclusions HPPMW has damage effects on the pancreas in rats. The pulses with the pancreas can lead to severity of the damage. The mechanism of HPPMW may be involved in the enhancement of ET and NO in serum.
