It has been demonstrated that some tumour tissues can induce ectoderm of amphibian embryo to differentiate. In order to accumulate informations about inductive action of tumour tissues on the ectoderm of chick blastoderm, several malignant tissues, both fresh or treated with 70％ alcohoI, were taken from Rous sarcoma, Walker cancer-sarcoma, sarcoma 180, spindle cell sarcoma and esophageal cancer cell line (109 cell line) as inductor, while the ectoderm was taken from the region lateral to the node and streak of blastoderm of stage 4 of chick embryos. They were brought together by the "Sandwich" technique as described elsewhere (Chang). The explants were then cultivated on the area vasculosa of 1～2 days chick blastoderm for 1～5 days. The specimen were preserved in Bouin's fixitive and stained with hemotoxylin eosin. The results showed that in all of the cases except two the neural formation was not induced in the ectoderm of the blastoderm by the tumour tissues used. The two cases that showed atypical neural plates were induced by the fresh tissue from sarcoma 180 and the tissue from spindle cell sarcoma treated with 70％ alcohol. In less than one half of the cases the capacity for placoid thickening response of the ectoderm (Fig 1,2) or atypical epiderm proliferation (Fig 3) was observed, while most of the remaining cases were incapable to show any response to tumour tissues. The possible role of the ectoderm of chick blastoderm in responding to tumor tissues was discussed in relation to that of amphibian embryo.

It has been well documented that cyclic AMP and its derivative dibutyryl cyclic AMP (dbcAMP) preferably inhibit the growth of transformed fibroblasts in vitro. However, there have been no much information concerning the action of dbcAMP on established human cancer cell line. The present study was designed to examine the effects of dbcAMP, aminophilline and of the combination of these two agents on human hepatoma cell line BEL-7402. In order to study the possible mechanism of the action of dbcAMP, the influence of dbcAMP on the ultrastructure of the cells was observed. The results showed that both dbcAMP (0.2 mM)or aminophilline (0.2 mM) alone could inhibit the growth of the cells and as the concentration increased, the inhibitory effect increased too. The combined use of dbcAMP and aminophilline exerted stronger action on cell growth. However, the effects of either dbcAMP and aminophilline alone, or combined use of two agents were reversible.Microscopic observation showed that the cells became longer and thinner, even with long cytoplasmic processes (Fig 2) after the treatment with dbcAMP plus aminophilline. The most prominent changes of ultrastructures induced by both agents included the folowing three aspects: Ⅰ. microvilli on the cell surface decreased in number (Fig 3,5). 2. tonofibrils increased in number (Fig 4). 3. polyribosomes assembled into irregular masses and lost the clustered structure (Fig 4). Based on the above observation, it might suggest that the inhibitory effect of dbcAMP may be due to its action in inducing a certain degree of differentiation of BEL-7402 cells.

Objective To explore the effict of Jiegu-Qili tablet combined with intramedullary interlocking nails in the treatment of the fracture of tibia and fibula. Methods A total of 80 patients with fracture of tibia and fibula were selected, and were divided into two groups according to odd and even number of hospitalization. The surgery group (39 patients) was given intramedullary interlocking nails, the surgery and drug group (41 patients) was given Jiegu-Qili tablet combined with intramedullary interlocking nails. The perioperative parameters, the rate of fracture healing, knee scores and complications were evaluated during 12 months. Results The hospitalization (14.43 ± 2.47 d vs. 21.63 ± 3.16 d, t=11.385, P<0.01) and fracture healing time (5.22 ± 1.05 m vs. 9.75 ± 0.97 m, t=20.016, P<0.05) of the surgery and drug group was shorter than that of the surgery group. The fracture healing rate of surgery and drug group (92.7%vs. 76.9%,χ2=3.894, P<0.05) was higher than that of the surgery group. After 6 months surgery, the pain, activity, stability and KSS scores (21.60 ± 1.60 vs. 19.50 ± 1.90, 22.7 ± 2.8 vs.18.70 ± 2.40, 23.50 ± 2.40 vs. 19.40 ± 1.80, 89.20 ± 9.30 vs. 78.00 ± 8.30) of the surgery and drug group were higher than that of the surgery group (P<0.05). There was no statistical significance on walking ability between two groups (21.40 ± 2.50 vs. 20.40 ± 2.20, P>0.05). During 12 months follow-up, there were no statistical significance on complications between two group (7.3%vs.15.4%,χ2=1.303, P>0.05). Conclusions In summary, the Jiegu-Qili tablet combined with intramedullary interlocking nails had a good therapeutic effect on the fracture of tibia and fibula. It could increase the speed of fracture healing, shorten the hospitalization, reduce the postoperative pain and improve the activity of patients.

The selective toxicity of the mitochondria-specific cationic fluorescent dye rhodamine 123 (Rh-123) on HeLa cells in culture was studied. In this report, we demonstrate that with continuous exposure, Rh-123 markedly inhibited the growth of HeLa cells but had little effect on normal human kidney fibroblasts. With continuously exposed to Rh-123, the growth rate, colony forming ability, and mitotic index of HeLa cells were decreased. The mechanism of toxicity of Rh-123 on HeLa ceils was investigated by EM and enzyme cytochemistry stain. The mitochondria of carcinoma cells were the main targets for the inhibitory action of Rh-123, since they selectively accumulated the dye. At the dosage of Rh-123 which was toxic to HeLa cells, the structure and function of mitochondria were disrupted, as the mitochondriarelated enzymes, i. e., ATPase, LDH, and SDH were inhibited. The possible mechanism of the action of Rh-123 on HeLa cells is briefly discussed.

An“agar-island organ culture”technique is described.It consists of both agar substratum and liquid medium in the same culture dish,so that chemicals in different concentrations can be added into the liquid portion of the medium,a convenient method to test their effects on explants.The procedures are as follows: To one gram of agar in a flask,50 ml of aqua distillata is added,and then heated until the agar is completely dissolved.Then add in 50 ml of double-strength 199 solu- tio(?) into the flask.After shaking gently,mixing the media completely,pour it into a dish until it reaches 2/3 of its height.A few minutes later the agar will solidify.Cut off most of the agar substratum and leave enough agar to form“islands”(Eig.A,B).Then add in liguid medium which is composed of 8 vol 199 solution,2 vol calf serum,2 vol extract of 9-day chick embryo diluted into 50% in Hank's solution and a few drops of diluted penicillin and streptomycin.The explants are placed on the agar-islands,the culture dishes covered with glass tops,sealed with paraffin,are put into an incubator.The cul- ture dishes are not sealed they are put into an incubator supplemented with 5%CO_2 Using this technique,we have cultured 80 explanls of 13-day chick embryo meta- tarsal skin for 7～21 days.And the effect of vit.A with different concentrations are tested The results show that the effects of vit,A on the differentiation of the chick embryo metatarsal skin explants are different with the different concentrations.We believe that this technique can be much more convenient as a method to study the eff- ects of chemicals in different concentrations on explants.The other uses of this tech(?)i- que,such as carcinogenesis in culture,the study of embryonic induction,especially the diffuse mechanism of embryo induction are also briefly discussed.

ObjectiveTo explore changes of lipopolysaccharide (LPS), lipopolysaccharide-binding protein (LBP), bactericidal/permeability-increasing protein (BPI), soluble CD14 (sCD14) in blood of cirrhosis patients and their clinical significance.MethodsSerum samples of 45 cirrhosis patients were detected with chromogenic limulus amebocyte lysate assay for LPS and detected with ELISA for LBP, BPI and sCD14. While, serum samples of 15 normal subjects were used as controls.ResultsLevels of LPS, LBP, BPI and sCD14 in blood of cirrhosis patients with liver function being grade A, B and C were significantly higher than that in normal subjects. Also, those indexes fore mentioned were obviously higher in died cirrhosis patients than that in survived cirrhosis patients.Conclusion High levels of LBP, LPS and relative deficiency of BPI in cirrhosis patients accompanied with intestinal endotoxemia (IETM) may significantly increase the sensitivity of body to endotoxin.

ObjectiveTo explore the molecular mechanism of protective effects of recombinant human interleukin-11( rhIL-11) pretreatment on intestinal ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury of rats.MethodsThe I/R model of rat was produced by clampi ng the superior mesenteric artery for 1 hour, animals were divided randomly into the normal control group (A), I/R group (B), normal saline control group? and rhIL-11 pretreatment group (D). In group C and D, animals were administered w ith saline(0.25ml/rat/day)or rhIL-11 (600μg/kg/day) two days before the oper ation. Rats in different groups were sacrificed at 6 hours and 24 hours after re perfusion respectively. Intestinal apoptosis was detected by TUNEL staining, and the expression of bcl-2, caspase 3 and caspase 8 were determined by immunohist ochemistry. Meanwhile pathologic pictures were detected by hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining.ResultsHE and TUNEL examinations showe d that in group D, the intestinal barrier was damaged obviously slighter than th at in the group B and group C, with decreased apoptosis cells, meanwhile, expres sion levels of caspase 3 and caspase 8 were lower, and bcl-2 was higher than th e group B and group C.Conclusions The protective e ffect of rhIL-11 pretreatment on rat intestinal I/R injury might be caused by t hat the expression of activities of caspase 3 and caspase 8 are inhibited and b cl-2 is activated.

Objective To study the effect of integrated tradition and western medicine on unstable angina.Methods Sixty-six patients with unstable angina were randomized into two groups:control group treated only with routine therapy(n=33) and experiment group treated with routine and jia jian luang gan jian therapy(n=33).The difference of EKG,symptoms and clinic comprehensive evaluation between before treatment and after-3-week-treatment were compared.Results The rate of symptoms and ECG improvement was higher in experiment group than control group(94% vs 73%;73% vs 45%).The difference of clinic comprehensive score between before treatment and after 3 weeks treatment was significantly higher in experiment group.Conclusion The treatment of integrated tradition and western medicine on patients with unstable angina is more effective.

The treatment of recurrent head and neck cancers has improved from single modality interventions of surgery and radiation therapy alone to include combined modality therapy with surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. Combined therapy has led to improved local control and disease-free survival. New developments in radiation oncology such as intensity-modulated radiotherapy, brachytherapy, stereotactic radiosurgery, fractionated stereotactic radiotherapy, have helped to improve this outlook even further. These recent advances allow for a higher dose to be delivered to the tumor while minimizing the dose delivered to the surrounding normal tissue. This article provides an update of the new developments in radiotherapy in the management of previously-irradiated recurrent head and neck carcinoma.
