ObjectiveTo investigate the biological significance and mechanism of VEGF-C in esophageal tumor development, and correlation of CNTN-1 level with VEGF-C.MethodsThe expression of VEGF-C and its receptors in esophageal squamous cancer cell (ESCC) and in corresponding noncancerous esophageal tissue specimens were detected by real-tithe PCR.Esophageal squamous cancer cell line TE-1 was transinfected by VEGF-C overexpression and gene silencing vectors, respectively, and the relative amount of C/EBP bound to CNTN-1 promoter was determined by quantitative ChIP,to explore the possibility that VEGF-C was involved in development of esophageal cancer through mediating transcription of CNTN-1.ResultsThe mRNA levels of VEGF-C was significantly higher in ESCC than in normal esophageal tissues.VEGF-C expression was significantly increased in VEGF-C-overexpressing TE-1 cells compared to untransfected cells (mock).Cells transfected with either of the VEGF-C targeting shRNA vectors,shRNA-1 and shRNA-2,showed reduced VEGF-C transcripts (P < 0.01 ).Expression levels of VEGF-C and CNTN-1 mRNA correlated significantly with each other. The binding site of C/EBP in CNTN-1 was detected by ChIP,and the relative amount of C/EBP binding to CNTN-1 promoter was significantly increased in TE-1 after transfecting by VEGF-C overexpression vector ( P < 0.05).ConclusionVEGF-C and its receptor are highly expressed in esophageal cancer tissues, which may be associated with ESCC carcinogenesis and development.VEGF-C may influence on growth and migration in TE-1 cells through CNTN-1.

Passive leg raising is widely used in clinic, but it lacks of specialized mechanical raise equipment. It requires medical staff to raise leg by hand or requires a multi-functional bed to raise leg, which takes time and effort. Therefore we have developed a new medical electric leg-raising machine. The equipment has the following characteristics: simple structure, stable performance, easy operation, fast and effective, safe and comfortable. The height range of the lifter is 50-120 cm, the range of the angle of raising leg is 10°-80°, the maximum supporting weight is 40 kg. Because of raising the height of the lower limbs and making precise angle, this equipment can completely replace the traditional manner of lifting leg by hand with multi-functional bed to lift patients' leg and can reduce the physical exhaustion and time consumption of medical staff. It can change the settings at any time to meet the needs of the patient;can be applied to the testing of PLR and dynamically assessing the hemodynamics; can prevent deep vein thrombosis and some related complications of staying in bed; and the machine is easy to be cleaned and disinfected, which can effectively avoid hospital acquired infection and cross infection; and can also be applied to emergency rescue of various disasters and emergencies.

Objective To evaluate the therapeutic effect of highly active anti-retroviral therapy (HAART) in treatment-na(i)ve Chinese patients with AIDS, to provide evidences for standardizing HAART.Methods Seventy-four treatment-naive AIDS patients were initiated with HAART and followed up regularly for 3 years. The clinical and laboratory data, side effects and drug resistance were observed and analyzed during the follow-up period. Results Of the 74 patients, 46 were males and 28 were females, with the average age being 42 years. The mean HIV viral load was ( 2. 2 ± 2.0 ) × 105 copies/ml and the baseline mean CD4+ T lymphocyte count was (62 ± 71 )cells/μl before treatment. After treatment for 3, 6, 12, 18,24, 30 and 36 months, the percentage of undetectable HIV viral road (less than 50 copies/ml ) was 71.6%, 83.8%, 75.7%, 77.0%, 82.4%, 81.1% and 79.7% respectively, and CD4+T lymphocyte count ascended to ( 167 ± 105), ( 177 ± 129), (238 ± 137), (290 ± 158), (304 ± 191 ), (331 ± 175) and ( 352 ± 202 ) cells/μl. The increase in amplitude of CD4+ T lymphocyte count in different periods examined was different, with the period of 0-3 months post-treatment demonstrating the most obvious augmentation ( P < 0. 01 ) . The most common adverse reactions were liver function injury ( 52/74,70. 3% ), hyperlipemia (52/74, 70. 3%), hematopoietic inhibition of the bone marrow (33/74, 44. 6% ),peripheral neuritis (32/74, 43.2% ) and lipoatrophy (26/74, 35. 1%). Clinical drug resistance were found in nine patients and HIV gene mutations were detected in these patients. Conclusions Chinese treatment-naive AIDS patients have achieved good virological and immunological response to generic-drugpredominant HAART regimes with low drug resistance, but relatively more side effects.

Issues caused by maxillofacial tumours involve not only dealing with tumours but also repairing jaw bone defects. In traditional tumour therapy, the systemic toxicity of chemotherapeutic drugs, invasive surgical resection, intractable tumour recurrence, and metastasis are major threats to the patients' lives in the clinic. Fortunately, biomaterial-based intervention can improve the efficiency of tumour treatment and decrease the possibility of recurrence and metastasis, suggesting new promising antitumour therapies. In addition, maxillofacial bone tissue defects caused by tumours and their treatment can negatively affect the physiological and psychological health of patients, and investment in treatment can result in a multitude of burdens to society. Biomaterials are promising options because they have good biocompatibility and bioactive properties for stimulation of bone regeneration. More interestingly, an integrated material regimen that combines tumour therapy with bone repair is a promising treatment option. Herein, we summarized traditional and biomaterial-mediated maxillofacial tumour treatments and analysed biomaterials for bone defect repair. Furthermore, we proposed a promising and superior design of dual-functional biomaterials for simultaneous tumour therapy and bone regeneration to provide a new strategy for managing maxillofacial tumours and improve the quality of life of patients in the future.
