1.A study on prospective memory in chronic primary insomnia
Chinese Journal of Neurology 2012;45(1):36-39
ObjectiveTo explore the characteristics and the pathogenetic mechanism of prospective memory in patients with chronic primary insomnia. Methods Forty-two patients with chronic primary insomnia and forty age, gender, education, and cultural level matched healthy adults were assessed with a battery of neuropsychological tests including event-based prospective memory (EBPM)and time-based prospective memory (TBPM) tasks.ResultsCompared with the healthy controls ( EBPM: 5.58 ± 0.35 ;TBPM: 4.10 ± 0.32),the patients with chronic primary insomnia had a significant loss in EBPM (3.44 ±0.40,t =3.933,P =0.000),but a insignificant impairment in TBPM (3.76 ± 0.29,t =0.787,P =0.433 ).The retrospective component of event-based prospective memory between the two groups had no significant difference ( t =1.308,P =0.195 ) ,neither did the retrospective component of time-based prospective memory ( Z =- 0.776,P =0.437 ).ConclusionThese results suggest that the patients with chronic primary insomnia have impairment in EBPM,but not in TBPM and the retrospective component of prospective memory.

Objective: To study the inhibitory effect of retrovirus-mediated antisense human telomerase RNA (hTR) gene on hepatocelluar carcinoma, so as to explore an effective way to inhibit telomrerase activity in the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma. Methods: Sense and antisense hTR gene were transfected into the packaging cell line PT67 by electroporation, and the stablely transfected cells were selected with G418. The recombinant retroviral supernatant was collected and transfected into HepG2 cells. After G418 selection, PCR was used to verify the integration of the hTR gene. Cell growth curves were drawn using MTT assay and the expression of PCNA was determined by immunofluorescence. TRAP-PCR-ELISA was adopted to detect the telomerase activity; cell cycle and apoptosis were evaluated by flow cytometry (FCM).Results: The expression of hTR gene could be amplified in HepG2-hTR-EcoRⅠ and HepG2-hTR-BamHⅠ cells, but not in untransfected HepG2 cells. The antisense hTR complementary to the template region of telomerase inhibited growth and proliferation of HepG2 cells. The expression of neutrophil proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) was decreased. Telomerase activity in the antisense hTR-treated group was (2.31?0.16),which was significantly lower than those of the other 2 groups(P

Objective To investigate the event-based prospective memory (EBPM) and time-based prospective memory (TBPM) in temporal lobe epilepsy patients, and test the hypothcsis that temporal lobe is involved in the prospective memory network. Methods Sixty-two patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) and 30 age- and education level-matched healthy adults were examed with the neuropsychological battery of tests including EBPM and TRPM tasks. Results In comparison with the controls, the TLE patients were impaired on MMSE,DS and VFT.Compared with the healthy adults ( EBPM:6.83± 1.34,TBPM:5.00 ± 1.70),the patients with temporal lobe epilepsy had a significant loss in EBPM (3.95 ±2.77,t =6.72,P <0.01 ) and TBPM (3.08 ±2.42,t =4.39,P <0.01).There was no difference in the performance of EBPM (3.82 ± 2.70,4.10 ± 2.90 ; t =- 0.40,P > 0.05 ) and TBPM (2.55 ± 2.20,3.69± 2.55; t =-1.90,P >0.05 ) between the patients with taking antiepileptic drugs and those without antiepileptic drugs. Conclusions These results suggest that patients with temporal lobe epilepsy may experience general difficulties with prospective memory. It is possible that temporal lobe is involved in the prospective memory network. The passages of TBPM need more self-initiated processes.

Objective:
To understand literacy development of school-aged children of grade 2-5 and its influencing factors in Guangzhou, and to provide a reference for the reform of the teaching of Chinese subject.
Methods:
By using cluster sampling method, 1 661 school-age children from grade 2 to grade 5 from 5 primary schools in Guangzhou were selected. The self-designed questionnaire was used to obtain demographic data of the participants. The Primary School Literacy Assessment Scale and the Pupil Rating Scale Revised Screening for Learning Disabilities was used to evaluate the literacy and the cognitive characteristics of participants.
Results:
The average literacy of children of grade 2 to grade 5 in Guangzhou was as follows: grade 2 was (1 159±295), grade 3 was (1 919±394), grade 4 was (2 599±365), grade 5 was (2 947±303), higher than the norm(P<0.01). The average literacy of grade 2 students was lower than the national curriculum requirements while students of grade 3 to grade 5 met the requirements. Univariate analysis found differences in literacy among school-age children based on gender, reading experience before age 6, and parental education background (P<0.01). Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that grade (β=607.04), preschool reading experience (β=109.89), father’s education (β=27.14), language factor (β=27.21), social behavior (β=16.03) was positively correlated with literacy in boys (P<0.05). Grade (β=603.53), auditory comprehension and memory (β=29.39), language factor (β=16.74) was positively correlated with the literacy of girls (P<0.05), while time and orientation judgments were negatively correlated with the literacy of both boys (β=-18.95) and girls (β=-21.93) (P<0.05).
Conclusion
The literacy level of school-age children in grade 2 to 5 in Guangzhou has reached the national literacy requirements with students in grade 2 being relatively lower. Literacy is related to grade, preschool reading experience, father’s education, and child’s cognitive characteristics. Factors affecting literacy in boys and girls are different. Literacy education should vary according to gender.
