Objective To establish a colony of genetic idiopathic hypercalciuric rats model which can stablely descend and initially explore the mechanism of idiopathic hypercalciuric development. Methods The male and female rats with the highest 24-h urine Ca excretion and normal serum calcium, phosphorus and 1,25(OH)2D3 were chosen for inbreeding to propagate the colony until the stable hypercalcinuria was achieved in filial generation. Immunohistochemical determination (SP method) was undertaken to determine the VDR expression in model rats duodenum. Results The content of two 24 h urine Ca excretion in 93% male and 92% female generation 7 model rats was double standard deviation more than that in the normal group(2.56?0.86 mg/d vs. 1.12?0.18 mg/d,2.86?1.16 mg/d vs. 1.15?0.12 mg/d respectively)(F=27.10,P*0.05). VDR expression was remarkably increased in model rats duodenum(F=14.23,P

Objective: To investigate the expression and prognostic significance of insulin-like growth factor binding protein 5 (IGFBP5) in gastric adenocarcinoma (GAC). Methods:IGFBP5 expression in tissue samples from 236 GAC patients was analyzed us-ing immunohistochemical methods. These patients had undergone surgical resection between 20003 and 2006 in Sun Yat-Sen Universi-ty Cancer Center. The relationship between IGFBP5 expression and clinicopathological factors in the 236 GAC patients was analyzed using Pearson correlation analysis. The significance of IGFBP5 in predicting the survival status of these patients was analyzed using Ka-plan-Meier survival analysis and Cox's proportional hazards regression model. Results:Immunohistochemical staining data indicated that IGFBP5 expression was significantly decreased in 159 of the total GAC cases (67.4%). Of the 62 cases with well-and moderately differentiated GAC, 31 (50%) exhibited reduced IGFBP5 expression. Of the 174 cases with poorly differentiated GAC, 128 showed re-duced IGFBP5 expression. Reduced IGFBP5 expression was also observed in female patients and in patients with tumors over 5 cm in size or with poorly differentiated tumors (P<0.05). The reduced expression of IGFBP5 was common in the tumors that were staged as T3+4a/b andⅢ/Ⅳ(P<0.05). Kaplan-Meier survival analysis revealed that the reduced expression of IGFBP5 was associated with poor prognosis in GAC patients (P<0.001). Cox regression analysis identified IGFBP5 expression as an independent prognostic factor for the overall survival of these cancer patients (HR=1.897, P=0.029). Conclusion: IGFBP5 expression is reduced in GAC tissues, and IGFBP5 independently predicts an unfavorable prognosis in GAC patients.

Objective To observe the effect of combining virtual reality technology with occupational thera-py in treating children with spastic hemiplegia resulting from cerebral palsy. Methods Thirty-eight spastic and hemiplegic children with cerebral palsy were randomly divided into a treatment group ( n=18) and a control group ( n=20) . Both groups received occupational therapy, while the treatment group was additionally provided with virtual reality-based treatment. The sessions lasted 30 min, 6 times a week for 3 months. Before and after the treatment the upper extremity motor function of both groups was assessed using the fine motor quotients of the Peabody developmen-tal motor scale, the Caroll hand function scale and a activities of daily life scale. Results Before the treatment there was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of any of the measurements. After the 3 months, significant improvement was observed in both groups, but the improvement of the treatment group was significantly greater than that of the control group. Conclusion Virtual reality technology can further improve the motor function of the upper ex-tremities and ability in the activities of daily life beyond that achievable through occupational therapy alone.
