Chinese Journal of Diabetes 2008;16(12):708-710
Objective To observe the effect of rosiglitazone on nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in type 2 diabetic patients. Methods The 95 newly diagnosed type 2 diabetics with CT scan displayed NAFLD were enrolled and divided into three groups randomly:(1) rosiglitazone group (R group) were treated for six months with rosiglitazone,4mg once daily,(2) metformin group (M group) were treated with metformin,0.5g three times daily,(3) control group were treated with other medicines except for thiazolidinedione and metformin. Results The CT value ratio of liver to spleen, disappearance rate of fatty liver and ISI were much higher in R group than in M group, while those were much higher in M group than in control group. HOMA-IR was lowest in R group and highest in control group. FIns in R group and M group was much lower than in control group. Conclusions Rosiglitazone can treat NAFLD,increase the insulin sensitivity and improve the insulin resistance in T2DM patients. The therapeutic effects of rosiglitazone are better than metformin. Rosiglitazone has no damage on liver function in our study

Pancreatic portal hypertension (PPH),which accounts for about 5% of extrahepatic portal hypertension cases,is mainly caused by pancreatic tumor, chronic pancreatitis and pancreatic ductal lithiasis. The pathogenesis and pathological characteristics of PPH are attributed to anatomical structure between splenic vein and pancreas. It is different from cirrhotic portal hypertension,PPH patients may present with less esophageal and gastric fundus varices, but more significant gastric body varices. The portal vein radiography is recognized as the golden standard for PPH diagnosis. There are two types of treatment modalities for PPH,symptomatic treatment and pathogenesis-based treatment. In clinically,we should take careful consideration into portal hypertension and primary disease, aim to resolve causes and manage complication concurrently.

Inherited platelet function disorders(IPFD)is a rare hereditary disease characterized by various degrees of bleeding tendency with or without thrombocytopenia.Due to the lack of standardized evaluation system in laboratory test, the diagnosis and classification of IPFD are difficult. Thus, the incidence of IPFD may be underestimated. At present, combined with symptoms and laboratory tests, the second generation sequencing technology is conductive to the fast and accurate diagnosis of complex hemorrhagic diseases of this type and can prompt assessment and treatment. However, there still exists no effective targeted treatment for IPFD.This paper was aimed at introducing the diagnosis and treatment of IPFD.

OBJECTIVETo develop a new technique for assessing the risk of birth defects, which are a major cause of infant mortality and disability in many parts of the world.
METHODSThe region of interest in this study was Heshun County, the county in China with the highest rate of neural tube defects (NTDs). A hybrid particle swarm optimization/ant colony optimization (PSO/ACO) algorithm was used to quantify the probability of NTDs occurring at villages with no births. The hybrid PSO/ACO algorithm is a form of artificial intelligence adapted for hierarchical classification. It is a powerful technique for modeling complex problems involving impacts of causes.
RESULTSThe algorithm was easy to apply, with the accuracy of the results being 69.5%±7.02% at the 95% confidence level.
CONCLUSIONThe proposed method is simple to apply, has acceptable fault tolerance, and greatly enhances the accuracy of calculations.

The nuclear transcription factor nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NRF2) plays a crucial role in maintaining cellular redox homeostasis. The aberrant NRF2 signaling confers enhanced antioxidant capacity, which is linked to tumor progression and therapeutic resistance. The current study investigates the biological effects and molecular mechanism of tribbles homolog 3 (TRIB3), a stress-induced protein, in regulating cell survival and apoptosis in lung cancer. This study first performed the RNA sequencing data analysis with 576 lung adenocarcinoma patients from the cancer genome atlas (TCGA) database. The NRF2- antioxidant response element (ARE) signature was enriched in patients with high TRIB3 expression. Dual-luciferase reporter assay and real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were used to confirm the effect of TRIB3 on the kelch-like ECH-associated protein-1 (KEAP1)-NRF2 pathway. AIM: To investigate the effect of compound rhubarb preparation (Kintop) in preventing obesity in rats and its probable mechanism involved. METHODS: Twenty-six newborn SD rats were randomly grouped as rhubarb preparation plus high-energy forage group( n= 8), high-energy forage control group( n= 8) and ordinary forage control group( n= 10). The rats in rhubarb preparation plus high-energy forage group and high-energy forage control group were fed with high-energy forage and those in ordinary forage control group were fed with ordinary forage. The rats in rhubarb preparation plus high-energy forage group were administered by compound rhubarb preparation (40 mg?100 g -1 body weight?d -1 ) from 9th to 17th week. The dynamic changes in body weight, celiac fat weight and adipocytes size were measured. Immunohistochemical analysis of leptin in celiac adipocytes (ABC method) and measurement of serum leptin level (RID method) were performed. RESULTS: The body weight and the wet weights of celiac fat were lower, their adipocytes were smaller and immunohistochemical stainings of leptin were weaker in rhubarb preparation plus high-energy forage group than those in high-energy forage control group. There was an obvious positive correlation between the expression of leptin and celiac fat tissue weight( r= 0.8663, P
