Chinese Journal of Pathophysiology 1986;0(02):-
Basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) is a multi-potential growth factor whose biological activities depend on its receptor's intrinsic tyrosine kinase activity and second messengers such as the mitogen activated protein kinases. Heparin sulfate proteoglycans (HSPGs) have been demonstrated to enhance or inhibit bFGF activity. The response elicited by HSPG is related to the relative concentrations and binding kinetics for bFGF of the various pools of HSPG. The type of cellular response might depend on the specific HSPG and FGF receptor expressed on the cell surface. The specific core protein of HSPG, and tissue specific differences in heparin sulfate modification result in altered bFGF regulation.

In order to establish a method for the determination of the sterols of the oil in the freeze-dried acai (Euterpe oleracea Mart.) and to evaluate its antioxidant activities, a saponification/extraction procedure and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis method were developed and validated for the analysis of phytosterols in PEE (Petroleum ether extract). Separation was achieved on a Purosper STAR LP C18 column with a binary, gradient solvent system of acetonitrile and isopropanol. Evaporative light scattering detection (ELSD) was used to quantify β-sitosterol and the total sterols. Peak identification was verified by retention times and spikes with external standards. Standard curves were constructed (r = 0.999 2) to allow for sample quantification. Recovery of the saponification and extraction was demonstrated via analysis of spiked samples. The highest content of total sterols is β-sitosterol. The antioxidant activities of the extracts were evaluated using the total oxyradical scavenging capacity assay (TOSC assay). The result showed that the PEE exhibited significant antioxidant properties, sample concentration and the antioxidant capacity had a certain relevance.

Objective To analyze the clinical characteristics of children massive cerebral infarction after traumatic brain injury. Methods The clinical data of 33 children with massive cerebral infarction after traumatic brain injury were retrospectively analyzed. Results Among the 33 children, 24 cases suffered from falling, 10 cases were involved in traffic accidents, 1 case suffered from violence and 1 case was hit by falling object. The massive cerebral infarction occurred in all objects: 9 cases in 1 day after head trauma, 14 cases in 1 - 3 days, 7 cases in 4 - 7 days, and 3 cases after 7 days. Eighteen patients were performed operation to evacuate the intracranial hematoma and decompression. Antiplatelet agents, calcium antagonist and low molecular dextran were administered in all patients after exclusion of bleeding tendency. The follow-up period of all children ranged from 6 months to 24 months. According to Glasgow outcome score (GOS):18 cases showed a good outcome, 6 cases were moderately disabled, 1 case was severely disabled, 1 case survived in a permanent vegetative state and 7 cases died. Conclusions The main causes of children massive cerebral infarction with traumatic brain injury are falling and traffic accident. With proactive treatment, the prognosis of children survivors is acceptable.

Chinese Journal of Oncology 2004;26(3):161-164
OBJECTIVETo explore the effect of Ang-2 on angiogenesis in gastric cancer.
METHODSThe expression of Ang-2 mRNA was analyzed by RT-PCR and the expression of VEGF and CD34 was detected by immunohistochemistry in 36 cases of gastric cancer tissues and their paired adjacent gastric mucosa.
RESULTSThe expression of Ang-2 mRNA was found both in gastric cancer and their paired adjacent gastric mucosa; the correlationship between the general expression levels of Ang-2 mRNA and microvessel density (MVD) in gastric cancer tissues was not found. However, in 27 cases whose Ang-2 mRNA expression levels in cancer tissues were lower than those in adjacent gastric mucosa. A significant positive correlation between the expression level of Ang-2 mRNA and MVD in the tumor tissues was found (r = 0.411, P < 0.05). In these 27 cases, the MVD in the gastric cancer tissues with positive VEGF expression (45.45 +/- 10.30) was higher than that with negative VEGF expression (30.15 +/- 8.69, P < 0.05), whereas in the other 9 cases whose expression levels of Ang-2 mRNA in cancer tissues were higher than those in adjacent gastric mucosa, a significant negative correlation between expression level of Ang-2 mRNA and MVD in the tumor tissues (r = -0.758, P < 0.05), but without correlation between the MVD and VEGF.
CONCLUSIONUnder the conditions that the expression of Ang-2 mRNA in cancer tissues was lower than that in adjacent gastric mucosa, VEGF could promote the sprouting of new vessels along with Ang-2 upregulation. But under the conditions that the expression of Ang-2 mRNA in cancer tissues was higher than that in adjacent gastric mucosa, Ang-2 inhibited angiogenesis. Angiopoietin-2 may play a dual effect on angiogenesis in gastric cancer.

OBJECTIVETo study the protective effect of Acai berries(Euterpe oleraceae) on chronic alcoholic hepatic injury in rats and their mechanism.
METHODWistar rats were fed for 1 week and randomly divided into blank group, model group, Dongbao Gantai group, Acai 1.6, 0.8, 0.4 g . kg-1 groups. The blank group was given distilled water, and the other groups were orally given 56% white spirit (Erguotou) for eight weeks at the dosages of 8 mL . kg-1 in the 1st week, which increased by 0.1 mL week by week till to 15 mL . kg-1, in order to establish the chronic hepatic injury model, and observe the effect of Acai berry freeze-dried powder on hepatocyte membrane permeability, liver lipid peroxidation, changes in inflammatory cytokines and pathological changes in hepatocytes.
RESULTAcai berries could significantly reduce serum ALT and AST(P<0.05), MDA(P<0.05), TG(P<0.05) and serum TNF-α and IL-6(P <0.05) and increase GSH and SOD(P <0.05). According to liver histopathological observation, livers in the model group were dominated by steatosis, some livers suffered spotty necrosis and inflammatory cell infiltration; The positive drug and Acai groups showed different changes in pathologic changes in rat livers.
CONCLUSIONAcai berries show s specific protective effect on alcoholic hepatic injury. Its mechanism may be correlated with the inhibition of such inflammatory factors as TNF-α and IL-6.
