Extracts from roots and leaves of Polyscias fruticosa Harms. (Araliaceae) and their combination have been studied on lipid peroxidation in mouse brain using an auto-oxidation and a free radical generating system: the Fenton’s reagent (ferrous iron + hydrogen peroxide). All the root, leaf and combined extracts have inhibitory action on peroxidation of lipids and trolox, a water-soluble analogue of vitamin E used as a reference antioxidant compound. The results also indicate that the leaf extract is the strongest of all.

The study was conducted to compare bioavailability of rifampicin at the same doses with and without isoniazid and pyrazinamide in the standard separate tablets in 12 healthy volunteers. Bioavailability of rifampicin was estimated by plasma concentration of rifampicin from 0h to 24h after administration. Plasma rifampicin concentration was determined by HPLC method. The results revealed that Cmax and AUC for rifampicin was reduced (31.24% and 25.95%, respectively) when rifampicin - isoniazid - pyrazinamide was administeredat the same time. It was concluded that bioavailability of rifampicin was affected by presence of isoniazid and pyrazinamide.

Accelerated stability test has been applied for predicting self-life of national standard serum tetanus anti-toxin (SAT). Samples of the tetanus antitoxin were kept at - 20°C, 4°C, 22°C, 37°C and 45°C for 6 months and their potency was estimated by using the toxin neutralization method on mice. There was relationship between the potency change and the self- life of serum tetanus antitoxin by using Arrhenius equation. The results demonstrated that the self-life of the national standard serum tetanus antitoxin was 9 years and 6 months when stored at -20°C.

Cross-sectional study was conducted in 6 handicraft villages, 600 producing households, 1.672 handicraft employees and 135 agricultural employees. The study results showed that: 98.4% of producing households had generated hazardous factors such as noise, heat, dust, micro-organism etc. In food processing village: 83.3% of micro-climate samples and 100% of light samples exceeded the permissible limits. In mechanical villages: 100% of noise sample accessed the permissible limit. In fine arts furniture villages: 91.3% of micro-climate sample, 75% of light sample and 69.5% of dust sample exceeded the permissible limits. In general, almost of handicraft employee had poor knowledge on risk factors at workplaces and their harms. The disease prevalence of handicraft employees was 85.3% that was higher than that of agricultural employee (58,5%). The difference was statistic significant (p=0.0001; RR= 1.46). Handicraft employee liked to have healthcare services at commune’s health station or have health workers at worker place and health insurance.

Experimentally, hepatoprotective effect of DinhLang was expressed in mice. The extract of Dinh Lang leaf suppressed the increase of MDA level in brain and in liver of mice suffered from CCl4- induced hepatitis with antioxydant activity stronger than that of mixed extract and extract prepared from the root. Dinh Lang had manifested liver protective effect in tetrachlorurcarbone –induced acute hepatitis. Antioxydant effect expressed in the inhibition against the processes of peroxydation of cell membrane can be one of the mechanism of liver protective effect of Dinh Lang

Study on 204 patients with leprosy (139 males, 65 females) were treated at Hai Ba Trung hospital, Ha Noi, from 1955 to 1995. The author remarked: Regarding clinics: the most common affected regions were open regions (78.92%); 43.48% of which were on the face. The T aspect took up the highest percentage (53.4%). Regarding treatment: with the MDT chart the treatment was shorten and left no sequela.

Vietnamese ginseng leaves had the effect on the central nervous system, shortening pentobarbital-induced sleeping time in smaller doses and lengthening pentobarbital- induced sleeping time in larger doses. Vietnamese ginseng leaves extract (600, 1200mg/kg p.o) and its total saponin (200mg/kg p.o) significantly recovered the stress-induced decrease in pentobarbital sleep to the normal level. In the other hand, Vietnamese ginseng leaves extract and its total saponin have the invigoration and antioxidant effects

Both ethanol extracts of the bark and leaves of Schefflera elliptica (Blume) Harms (Araliaceae) showed antistress effect on mice at the oral doses of 158 and 167 mg/kg body weight, respectively. The bark proved to be more effective than the leaves, and their efficacity increased with the doses. Both extracts possessed in vitro antioxidant activity at the concentrations of 50-100 mcg/ml, the bark also being more effective than the leaves. The total saponin extract of the bark exhibited antioxidant effects at the levels of 5-25 mcg/ml. So, saponins might be the chemical constituents determining the antioxidant activity.

The urines of 80 healthy women were taken for qualifying DPD and creatinine. Results showed that; group 1 (aged 25-40) has got 4, 12 – 7,7 nM DPD/nM creatinine, group 2 (aged 41-49): 5,25-10,27 nM DPD/nM creatinine; group 3 (aged 50-68): 4,48-14,4 nM DPD/nM creatinine. In pre-menopausal women nM DPD/nM creatinine value was higher than in women of reproductive age. The method of combining metabolic bone marker and bone density was more efficacious than the simple bone densitometry. The rate of nM DPD/nM creatinine in particular and bone metabolic marker were very useful for diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis

20 healthy male students from 20-25 years of age were studied on the changes of peripheral blood indexes after the exact Hegu laser He-Ne irradiation with intensity 130 mW/cm2 for 2 minutes/point. 10 (changed most clearly) of 20 these students were irradiated laser outside the Hegu (1cm far from the Hegu) as the control group. Before irradiating, after laser 10, 30 minutes, vein blood was taken to investigate the following indexes: RBC, WBC, HGB, HCT, MCV, MCH, MCHC, PLT, NEUT/1, LYMPH/1, MDX/1, RDW-SD, MPV, P-LCR. The results showed that PLT, WBC, LYMPH/1 reduced markly after 10, 30 minutes (p<0.05); there were no differences of the other (RBC, HGB, HCT, MCV, MCH, MCHC, NEUT/1, RDW-SD, PDW, P-LCR) between before and after laser irradiation. There was no differences between before and after outside-Hegu laser He-Ne irradiation; the time when the peripheral blood indexes changed more clearly is at the 30th minute after irradiating.
