Journal of the Korean Surgical Society 2001;60(3):337-340
Despite the increasing number of patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, surgical experience with these patients remains limited in Korea. Patient with HIV infection may require surgery for the reasons similar to those anyone else might need an operation for or because of problems related to their viral illness. Surgeons feel threatened by the risk of contamination when operating on HIV-seropositive or AIDS patients. However, the exclusion of patients from treatment is unethical on ground of contamination risk. Therefore the surgeons have to reconsider their surgical strategy and technique in order to keep chances of contamination as low as possible. We report a case in which the AIDS patient has undergone an operation for gastric bezoar. To our Knowledge, this is the first report of laparotomy in Korea in patient with AIDS.

Paragonimiasis is the infestation of lung flukes of the trematode genus Paragonimus. This disease is common in Asia, and the southern part of Korea has been known as one of the endemic areas of Paragonimiasis westermanii in Korea. Human infection is associated with specific dietary habits, such as eating freshwater crawfish or crabs. In a 6 1/2-year-old boy with pleural effusion and eosinophilia, paragonimiasis was diagnosed by skin test, serologic exam, and histologic identification of the parasites in a skin lesion. The same diagnosis was entertained in his elder sister with silent pleural effusion. We describe herewith these rare cases of paragonimiasis in two siblings who had a history of eating cooked freshwater crabs.

Clinical and Experimental Otorhinolaryngology 2012;5(3):177-180
Laryngotracheal separation (LTS) is the most immediately life-threatening airway injury. LTS is so rare that very few otolaryngologists have experience with it. LTS is one of the diagnostic and therapeutic challenges in airway diseases and its management remains to be established. We experienced a patient with complete LTS after attempted hanging. A high index of suspicion, adequate imaging, prompt airway establishment and early surgical repair are the most vital factors in managing a patient with LTS.
