2.Progress in research on metformin in inhibiting tumor metastasis
Chinese Journal of Clinical Oncology 2014;(23):1544-1547
Metformin has become the first-line drug for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, which is stably efficacious, safe, and cheap. Previous studies have shown that the application of metformin can decrease the rate of tumor incidence, recurrence, and metasta-sis. It can also improve the prognosis of cancer patients and their lifetime after long-term use. Considering its multiple advantages, met-formin has become an emerging choice for the treatment and prevention of cancer. Therefore, the mechanisms through which metfor-min inhibits tumor metastasis in cancer therapy are worth investigating.

Objective To study the expression of thymic stromal lymphopoietin(TSLP) and the activation of DCs in OVA-induced murine asthma model, and investigate the effects and underlying mecha-nisms of TSLP on lung inflammation. Methods Thirty BALB/c mice were randomly divided into control group, OVA group and TSLP neutralizing antibody treated group. The asthma model was evaluated by airway responsiveness and histological analysis of lung tissues ; The levels of TSLP mRNA in lungs were determined by quantitative real-time PCR; The expression of TSLP in lungs were determined by immunohistochemistry and Western blot; The expression of CD40, CD80, CD86 in BALF was detected by FACS. Results Both the histological analysis of lung tissues and the airway responsiveness were all consistent with the characteris-tic of murine asthma model. The expression of TSLP and TSLP mRNA in the OVA group was significantly in-creased compared with blank group. The expression of CD40, CD80, CD86 in BALF from OVA group was increased significantly compared with the control group. Furthermore, treating mice with TSLP neutralizing antibody reduced the expression of CD40, CD80, CD86 on dendritic cells, and IL-4, IL-5, IL-13 in the OVA group. Conclusion Our study indicate that TSLP was highly expressed in the bronchial epithelia of murine asthma model, via upregulation of CD40, CD80, CD86, induce DCs to active CD4~+ T cells and pro-duce type 2 responses, so that aggravating the lung inflammation of asthma. Blocking TSLP is capable of in-hibiting the production of Th2 cytokines, thus presents a promising strategy for the treatment of asthma.

Objective To quantify the correlation between isometric and isokinetic tests of core muscles during trunk rotation. Methods The strength of the core muscles of 38 healthy males was measured isometrically and isokinetically ( at 60°/s) during trunk rotation. The left and right peak rotation torque ( LPT,RPT) and the ratio of left to right torque (L/R) were analyzed using correlation and regression analysis and paired t-tests. Results The subjects' LPTs and RPTs were positively correlated ( rL =0.644,P ≤ 0.01 ;rR =0.566,P≤0.01 ) There were significant differences in the L/R ratios determined using the two tests (r=0.663,P≤0.01 ).The regression equations predicting LPT and RPT were yL =22.330 + 0.937x and yR =32.752 +0.847x,respectively.Paired t-tests showed that tL =4.562,P≤0.01 and tR =3.855,P≤0.01 during left or right rotation. There was a significant difference, but there was no significant difference in LPT/RPT. Conclusion Isometric and isokinetic tests of core muscles during trunk rotation give results which are strongly correlated.Either can correctly reflect the maximal strength of core muscles during trunk rotation.Clinicinas may reasonably choose either testing method to assess patients and guide treatment according to the patient's clinical symptoms and the severity of the problem.

BACKGROUND:Although several prosthetic methods, such as artificial denture and dental implants, are clinical therapies to tooth loss, they are thought to have safety and usage time issues. With the development of biological and biomaterial sciences, recently, tooth tissue engineering has attracted more and more attention.
OBJECTIVE:To reflect advances and problems of tissue engineering technologies for promotion of tooth regeneration.
METHODS:Using the keywords of“tissue engineering, tooth regeneration”in English and Chinese, PubMed and CNKI databases from 2007 to 2013 were retrieved. A total of 65 literatures addressing tooth regeneration and tissue engineering were col ected, including 25 Chinese articles and 40 English articles. Published early, repetitive, and similar researches were excluded. Final y, 48 articles were included.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:The combination of stem cells and suitable scaffolds is widely used in tooth regeneration today, and growth factors or bone marrow which can produce promote tooth regeneration are added as wel , which has achieved partial or whole tooth regeneration. But there are apparent deficiencies in studies which focus on mechanisms behind tooth regeneration.
