Objective To investigate the safety and feasibility of early removal of chest tubes after video-assisted thoracoscopic (VAST) lobectomy for lung cancer. Methods A retrospective study was performed based on the clinical data of sixty consecutive patients who underwent VATS lobectomy plus mediastinal lymph nodes dissection for lung cancer from October 2013 to September 2014 in a single center. Thirty patients were enrolled into the early removal management group (chest tubes removal when the drainage volume is less than 300 mL/d), while the other thirty patients were enrolled into the traditional management group (chest tubes removal at the drainage volume less than 100 mL/d ). Results Patients who underwent early removal management had a shorter time of chest tubes removal and postoperative hospital stay compared to the patients in the traditional management group [(2.10 ± 0.99) d vs. (3.83 ± 1.41) d, t = 5.485, P = 0.000; (7.97 ± 1.54) d vs. (9.20 ± 2.01)d, t = 2.669, P = 0.010)]. No statistically significant differences were observed among the drainage volume, postoperative complications and symptoms on fifteen days post-operation. No complication occurred on thirty days post-operation. Conclusions Early removal of the chest tubes after VATS lobectomy ,when the drainage volume is less than 300 mL/d,is safe and feasible. This leads to a shorter length of hospital stay without addtional risk of early postoperative complications.

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effect of antiviral agents in treating of severe acute respiratory syndrome(SARS). METHODS Based on the particular data (including medical history, examiuations and treatments) of 1702 patients of with SARS which were offered by the Health Bureau of Guangdong Province, the inpact factors of death and the course of diseases of SARS were retrospectively analyzed with unifactorial and multifactors statistic analysis methods. RESULTS It did not show any signs that the death rate could be decreased by the six antiviral agents in common use,but vidarabine could help to shorten the course of disease(OR=1.399,P=0.025),while oseltamivir might be prolonged the course of disease(OR=0.708,P=0.000). CONCLUSIONS The data showed that the effect of the six antiviral agents for curing SARS is limited, and a new antiviral treatment for SARS should be explored further.

BACKGROUND: Nanosphere, an ideal nonviral gene delivery vector, is not excellence of immunogenicity and oncogenicity. Nanotechnology and gene interference are used to block hypoxia-inducible factor 1 alpha (HIF-1α) expression in esophageal squamous carcinoma tissue and decrease tolerance of malignant cells to chemotherapeutics. Theoretically, they become effective methods to inhibit malignant cell growth of esophageal squamous carcinoma. OBJECTIVE: To study the inhibitory effect of small interference RNA targeting HIF-1α (siRNA-HIF-1α) nanospheres on human esophageal squamous cancer TE-1 cell growth. DESIGN, TIME AND SETTING: Based on in vitro cultured esophageal squamous cancer TE-1 cells, a completely randomized controlled study was performed at the Central Laboratory, the Third Hospital Affiliated to Sun Yat-sen University from January 2007 to December 2008. MATERIALS: siRNA-HIF-1α was synthesized by Shanghai Bioengineering Company; siRNA-HIF-1α nanospheres were prepared using solvent evaporation technique; human esophageal squamous cancer TE cell strain was provided by Shanghai Cell Bank of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. METHODS: TE-1 cells cultured in vitro were assigned into four groups: saline, gene-free nanospheres, siRNA-HIF-1α, and siRNA-HIF-1α nanospheres groups. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: HIF-1α mRNA expression was detected by RT-PCR; HIF-1α protein expression was detected by Western blot; apoptosis of TE-1 cells was determined by flow cytometry; TE-1 cell growth was examined by MTT. RESULTS: At 72 hours after treatment, both HIF-1α mRNA expression and HIF-1α protein expression in the siRNA-HIF-1α nanospheres group were significantly less than other three groups (P < 0.01), but apoptotic rate was significantly greater than other three groups (P < 0.01). TE-1 cell growth was remarkably inhibited in the siRNA-HIF-1α nanospheres group, which was significantly different compared with other three groups (P < 0.01).CONCLUSION: siRNA-HIF-1α nanospheres can specifically reduce both HIF-1α mRNA and HIF-1α protein expressions in esophageal squamous carcinoma TE-1 cells, significantly increase tumor cell apoptosis, and remarkably inhibit TE-1 cell growth.

Objective:To investigate the value of serum programmed cell death molecule 5 (PDCD5) protein expression in early prediction of gastric cancer and its clinical significance. Methods:A total of 103 patients with gastric cancer who were treated in Yuechi County People′s Hospital in Sichuan Province from March 2014 to March 2016 and 80 healthy people who underwent physical examinations (control group) in the same period were selected as subjects. The serum level of PDCD5 protein were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The diagnostic performance of serum PDCD5 protein on gastric cancer was evaluated by receiver operating characteristic curve. The patients with gastric cancer were divided into low-level group (50 cases) and high-level group (53 cases) according to serum PDCD5 protein level. The relationship between serum PDCD5 protein level and clinical data in patients with gastric cancer was analyzed by χ2 test. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression models were used to analyze independent risk factors for survival and prognosis of gastric cancer. Kaplan-Meier method was used to map survival curves of gastric cancer patients with different levels of serum PDCD5 protein. Results:Serum PDCD5 protein level in gastric cancer group was significantly lower than that in control group: (0.82 ± 0.30) mg/L vs. (1.26 ± 0.39) mg/L, and there was statistical difference ( t=8.628, P<0.01). Serum PDCD5 protein level in patients with gastric cancer was related to tumor TNM stage and tumor invasion ( P<0.05), but not related to gender, age, body mass index (BMI), tumor size, lymph node metastasis, tumor type and tumor differentiation ( P<0.05). The area under curve (AUC) of serum PDCD5 protein in the diagnosis of gastric cancer was 0.810 (95% CI 0.747 to 0.873), with a sensitivity of 71.8%, and a specificity of 76.3% ( Z=9.641, P<0.01). Serum PDCD5 protein level was an independent risk factor for poor prognosis in patients with gastric cancer ( P<0.05). The 5-year survival rate in low-level group was significantly lower than that in high-level group: 32.0% vs. 62.3%, and there was statistical difference ( χ2=18.422, P<0.01). Conclusions:The serum PDCD5 protein level in patients with gastric cancer is significantly decreased. Low serum PDCD5 protein level is independent risk factors for poor prognosis of patients with gastric cancer.
