Objective To investigate the clinical effect of perioperative electroacupuncture intervention on postoperative delirium (POD) in hip replacement surgery patients.Method One hundred and twenty-eight patients who would undergo hip replacement surgery were randomly allocated to treatment and control groups, 64 cases each. The treatment group received perioperative electroacupuncture and the control group, routine preoperative preparation and postoperative treatment. Serum S100β protein concentration was measured in the two groups of patients at one day before, the end of and one day after surgery. The incidences of POD were compared between the two groups at one, two and three days after surgery.Result There was a statistically significant difference in the incidence of POD between at one day after surgery and recovery from anesthesia in the two groups (P<0.01). In the treatment group, the incidence of POD was significantly lower at two and three days than at one day after surgery (bothP<0.05) and at three days than at two days after surgery (bothP<0.05). There was a statistically significant difference in the incidence of POD between the treatment and control groups at different time points (recovery from anesthesia, and one, two and three days after surgery) (P<0.01). In the treatment group, there was a statistically significant difference in S100β protein concentration between at one day after and the end of surgery (P<0.05). There was a statistically significant difference in S100β protein concentration between the treatment and control groups at the end of and one day after surgery (P<0.05).Conclusions Perioperative electroacupuncture treatment can effectively decrease postoperative incidence of delirium and its duration in hip replacement surgery patients.

Progress in Biochemistry and Biophysics 2001;28(2):210-215
Because the influence of fibrin on the reaction of plasm inogen activation by various plasminogen activators is different, the kinetic co nstant of the reaction of plasminogen activation catalyzed by InB with and witho ut fibrin were detected. The result is: Kfibrinm=4.2 μmol*L -1,greater than the normal Km=0.379 μmol*L-1; kfib rincat=0.107 s-1,greater than the normal kcat=0.0165 s-1. The results suggest that existence of fibrin in the reaction system of plasminogen activation depress the affinity between InB and plasminog en, but accelerates the hydrolysis of plasminogen by InB. The count up effect is inhibition.

Objective To investigate the effects of Xuebijing injection on expression of myeloid cell triggering receptor-1(TREM-1)and the plasma levels of soluble TREM-1(sTREM-1),tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α), interleukin-6(IL-6)in patients with severe sepsis. Methods Twenty patients with severe sepsis admitted into Critical Care Medicine Department,Affiliated Hospital of Nantong University were given comprehensive treatments according to the guidelines for management of severe sepsis and septic shock(2004),and they were divided into Xuebijing group and control group(each 20 cases). The Xuebijing injection group was given Xuebijing injection 50 mL,3 times daily for 5-7 days followed by regular treatments. The changes in blood TREM-1 mRNA expression and plasma concentrations of sTREM-1,TNF-α,and IL-6 were detected before and after treatments on the 3rd and 5th day,and the above indexes were compared between the two groups. Results Before treatments, there were no significant differences in TREM-1 mRNA expression and levels of sTREM-1,TNF-α,IL-6 between two groups (all P>0.05). The TREM-1 expression and plasma concentrations of sTREM-1,TNF-α,and IL-6 of two groups were declined after treatments compared to their baselines, the degree of decline being more prominent in Xuebijing group〔TREM-1 mRNA 3 days:1.065±0.277 vs. 1.217±0.301,t=-3.267,P=0.047;5 days:0.912±0.239 vs. 1.071±0.254,t=-5.072,P=0.032;sTREM-1(ng/L):146.93±13.76 vs. 176.22±19.46,t=-5.442,P=0.033;TNF-α(ng/L):77.51±11.28 vs. 107.72±13.17,t=-4.355,P=0.032;IL-6(ng/L):288.35±14.59 vs. 323.89± 24.51, t=-3.941,P=0.028〕. Conclusion Early implication of Xuebijing injection is of great significance in patients with severe sepsis,it may reduce the expression level of TREM-1 and serum levels of downstream inflammatory mediators, that is beneficial to the control of inflammatory responses and improvement of systemic inflammatory response syndrome in such patients.

BACKGROUND:Establishing a highly successful, safe, reliable standard spinal cord transection model is the precondition of studying spinal cord injury repair. OBJECTIVE:To evaluate the value of preparing spinal cord transection model in rats and the effects of laminectomy on spinal cord. METHODS: We searched the randomized controled trials involving rat models of spinal cord transection in the databases of PubMed, CNKI, VIP and WanFang. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:11 randomized controled trials (RCTs) met the inclusion criteria (two in English, 9 in Chinese), and a total of 394 rats were included in the study. There were significant differences in the lower limb motor function scores (BBB scores) within 1-6 weeks after injury (WMD=-12.86, 95%CI-16.10 to-9.62,P < 0.01) and electrophysiological indices within 4 weeks after injury (WMD=15.36, 95%CI 11.36 to 19.36,P < 0.01) between spinal cord hemisection group and laminectomy group. The BBB scores after 6 weeks were not significantly different between these two groups (WMD=-10.28; 95%CI-24.20 to 3.64;P=0.15). There were significant differences in the lower limb motor function scores (BBB scores) within 1-6 weeks after injury (WMD=

Objective:To isolate and culture the pulp cells from human young permanent teeth (pDPC),and to observe their biological characteristics and the expression of some specific markers, and to induce these pulp cells to differentiate into osteoblast, adipocyte, neuron and chondrocyte lineages. Methods:Pulp cells were isolated and cultured from orthodontic extracted premolars of children. The attached cells after at least 3 passages were used for the following experiments:1. Morphology and ultrastructure analysis; 2. Cell cycle and phenotype were analyzed by flowcytometry; 3. Growth curve were recorded;4. pDPC were induced to differentiate into osteoblast, adipocyte, neuron in vitro, and were identified by histochemical methods and RT-PCR. Results: 1. Attached pDPCs were fibrablast-like cells, which were distinguished from BMSC. 2. The cell organs in dDPCs were well developed. 3. pDPCs were highly positive for CD90, CD44, CD147,which are mesenchymal stem-cell markers, but were negative for other markers including CD34, CD38, CD45, HLA-DR. 4. pDPCs showed high growth rate. 5. pDPCs could be induced to differentiate into osteoblast, adipocyte, and neuron lineages, but not chondrocyte lineages. Conclusion:pDPCs were characterized by their ability to proliferate with high growth rate in vitro. The expression of some BMSC markers in these cells were observed. They showed the potential to differentiate into multiple mesenchymal lineages such as osteoblst, adipocyte, neuron lineages under specific conditions in vitro.
