OBJECTIVETo explore the curative effect and safety of acupuncture for mild cognitive disorders after stroke.
METHODSRandomized controlled trial was adopted and one hundred cases conforming to criteria were divided into a combined acupuncture and medication group (group A) and a medication group (group B), 50 cases in each group. The basic treatment of cerebrovascular disease was applied in two groups. The group A treated was with acupuncture at Baihui (GV 20), Shenting (GV 24) and Qucha (BL 4) etc. and oral administration of Nimodipine. In group B, Nimodipine was taken orally. The treatment lasted for 3 months, the scores of Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), modified Hasegawa Dementia Scale (HDS-R) and Barthel Index (BI) were observed before and after treatment in two groups.
RESULTSThe total effective rate in group A was 66.7% (32/48), which was superior to 30.4% (14/46) in group B (P < 0.05). The scores of MMSE, HDS-R and BI after treatment were apparently improved as compared with those before treatment in two groups (all P < 0.01). The improvements in group A were superior to those in group B (all P < 0.05). There was no adverse event reported during the treatment in two groups.
CONCLUSIONAcupuncture can improve activity of daily living and has significant effect in treating mild cognition disorders after stroke without adverse reactions.

Chinese Journal of Medical Aesthetics and Cosmetology 2012;(5):344-346
Objective To discuss the effect of transplanting autogenous rib cartilage in correction of short and upwardly rotated nose. Methods A piece of autogenous rib cartilage was transplanted into the front of nasal septa to lengthen it,leading to the nasal tip moving forwards and correcting the short and upwardly rotated nose. For low nose cases, simultaneous implants was used into the nasal back. Results The nasal tips were prolonged 0.75 cm on average after operation in 56 patients with short and upturned noses. The nasolabial angle and extent of nostril exposure were normal after operation. The operational consequences were fine in 54 patients, while 2 case were not satisfactory.Efficacy was stable during one year follow-up.Conclusions This method is reliable, and it can be recommended in rhinoplasty of patients with short and upwardly rotated nose.

Chinese Journal of Tissue Engineering Research 2005;9(16):246-247
BACKGROUND: Monoamine hypothesis has been demonstrated by researches. However, the correlation between the metabolite of plasma monoamine neurotransmitter and anti-depression treatment in patients with depression has less been reported.OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of different drugs on metabolite of plaama monoamine neurotransmitter, and the correlation between the metabolite of plasma monoamine neurotransmitter and anti-depression treatment in patients with depression.DESIGN: Case controlled study.SETTING: Neurological Department and Brain Institute of Nanjing Medical University.PARTICIPANTS: Forty patients with depression hospitalized in Nanjing Brain Hospital (depression group) were diagnosed with the second revised edition of China classification of mental diseases(CCMD-2) and the tenth edition of International classification of diseases. And the total score of Hanmilton rating scale for depression(HAMD) was more than 17. Healthy voluntary blood donators in the control group were from Nanjing Municipal Central Blood Station( n = 20).INTERVENTIONS: Antidepressant was used in the depression for 4 weeks: fluoxetine 20 mg per day; 5-serotonin selective reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) paroxetine 20 mg per day; venlafaxime 50- 100 mg per day;5-serotonin and morepinephrine selective reuptake inhibitor(SNRI) fluvoxamine 50-100 mg per day. High performance liquid chromatograpy(HPLC)was used to measure the level of metabolite of plasma monoamine neurotransmitter in patients with depression before and 42 week after treatment, and the HAMD was used to evaluate clinical effect of the patients.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The levels of metabolites of plasma monoamine neurotransmitters in patients with depression: 5-hydroxyindoleace tic acid(5-HIAA), 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylglycol(MHPG) and homovani llic acid(HVA) were measured before and 4th week after treatment.RESULTS: The levels of 5-HIAA, MHPG and HVA of the metabolites of plasma monoamine neurotransmitters in patients with depression before treatment [ (20.3±14.6), (124.8±103.6), (54.7±32.1) μg/L] were all lower than those in the normal control group[ (39.5±28.4), (334.5 ±107.3), (88.5±37.2) μg/L], with statistically significant differences (P<0.05). After SSRI treatment, the 5-HIAA content[ (37.1±21.9)μg/L]was significantly increased as compared with that before treatment, whose difference indicated significant meaning ( P<0.05), but the differences in MHPG and HVA had no significant meaning as compared with those before treatment(P>0.05) . After SNRI treatment, 5-HIAA and MHPG contents [(35.4±25.2 ), (291.2±120.4) μg/L] both were significantly increased, which indicated significant difference as compared with those before treatment( P<0.05); but HVA level had no significant changes.CONCLUSION:'The peripheral neurotransmitter metabolites in plasma can reflect their states in brain. The change of neurotransmitter metabolite in plasma can be regarded as an important reference index for the evaluation of depression.

BACKGROUND: The application of adipose derived stromal cells to tissue engineering has been more and more popular around the world. Compatibility of scaffold material is the key point for its further research.OBJECTIVE: To determine the growth rules of rabbit adipose-derived stromal cells with polylactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA).DESIGN, TIME AND SETTING: An in vitro study was performed at the Institute of Ophthalmology, Otolaryngology Hospital,Fudan University and Shanghai Tissue Engineering Center from September 2007 to March 2009.MATERIALS: Six female New Zealand rabbits aged six months were used for extraction of adipose-derived stromal cells. PLGA was provided by Sigma, USA.METHODS: Adipose tissue was harvested from the nape fat pad of the rabbits following anesthesia. Primary cultured cells were established using type I collagenase and cell cultures were maintained with DMEM containing 10% volume fraction of fetal bovine serum. Cells were passaged when 80% was confluent. The fourth passages of cells were utilized for the study. PLGA consisted of polylactic acid and polyglycolic acid as the ratio of 7:3, and the relative molecular mass was 104900.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Initially, the adherent rate of cells to scaffold was detected. After one week co-culture, the scaffold bearing adipose-derived stromal cells labeled with Dio agent were investigated by fluorescence inverse microscope, scanning electron microscopy and laser scanning microscope.RESULTS: The best adherent rate of adipose-derived stromal cells with PLGA reached 99%. After one-week-incubation in vitro, cells of fiber-shaped or ovule-shaped proliferated well and exhibited stratified growth on the surface of PLGA scaffold. In addition,it also secreted visible extracellular matrices, which could be examined by scanning electron microscopic examination.Meanwhile, the adipose-derived stromal cells grew well and distributed equably inside the PLGA in terms of the investigation with laser scanning microscope.CONCLUSION: The compatibility of adipose-derived stromal cells to PLGA in vitro was well.
