3.Volatile constituents in the flowers of Elsholtzia argyi and their variation: a possible utilization of plant resources after phytoremediation.
Journal of Zhejiang University. Science. B 2005;6(2):91-95
Phytoremediation effectiveness and remediation costs are driving factors of this project. Full utilization of plant resources after their being used for phytoremediation is an unsolved problem. GC/MS technique was used to investigate the volatiles of the flowers from Elsholtzia argyi (PFE1: Purple Flower Elsholtzia) and their variation (WFE: White Flower Elsholtzia), naturally growing in Pb/Zn mined area, and Elsholtzia argyi (PFE2: Purple Flower Elsholtzia), naturally growing in Jiuxi uncontaminated agriculture soil. Seventeen compounds constituting 86.88% of total essential oils were identified in PFE1, with 2,6-octadienoic acid,3,7-dimethyl-methyl ester being the main constituent (63.30%). Sixteen compounds accounting for 95.32% of total essential oils were identified in WFE, with caryophyllene being the main component (55.02%). Compared to PFE1, PFE2 contains lower level of 2,6-octadienoic acid,3,7-dimethyl-methyl ester (31.76%), which is the main constituent in the total essential oils of PFE2. Caryophyllene is the main ingredient of flavor. Elsholtzia ketone was identified in all the three Elsholtzia plants. It can be concluded that the selected Elsholtzia argyi plants can be exploited on their versatile uses as fragrances and antiseptics due to the perfume ingredient and antibacterial components existing in their essential oils.

Objective Vessel injury provokes the release of angiotensin II that influences the proliferation and migration of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs). T lymphocytes produced, interleukin 10 is of immunoregulatory function. The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of recombinant human interleukin 10 (rhIL 10) on the proliferation of isolated rat vascular smooth muscle cell and the activity of p44/p42 mitogen activated protein kinase (MAPK) promoted by angiotensin II. Methods Rat aortic VSMCs were cultured and treated with rhIL 10 or angiotensin II, and then co treated with rhIL 10 and angiotensin II. The proliferation was quantified by colormetric assay. The p44/p42 MAPK activity was evaluated by the immunobloting technique using anti p44/p42 phospho MAPK antibody. Results Compared with control group, angiotensin II stimulated significantly VSMCs proliferation(1 311?0 201 vs 0 781?0 236, P 0 05), but significantly inhibited VSMCs proliferation induced by angiotensin II at a dose of 1,10,100 ng/ml (0 984?0 172 , 0 932?0 134 , 0 784?0 097 vs 1 311?0 201, P

Objective To improve the level of diagnosis and differentiation of renal benign mass with renal cell carcinoma(RCC),so as to lower the misdiagnosis rate. Methods This study included 9 cases of benign renal mass, whose age ranged from 30 to 76 years with a mean of 54 years and included 52 patients with RCC.Three subtypes of RCC were noted, including clear cell in 37 cases, papillary RCC in 10 cases and chromophobe RCC in 5 cases.Plain scan and three phase CT(corticomedullary, nephrographic and excretory phases)were done in all patients. The CT features of RCC and benign mass were compared. Results All the cases were underwent radical nephrectomy as RCC,while they were postoperatively diagnosed as benign renal mass. There were 4 cases of angiomyolipoma (AML)with minimal fat,two cases of oncocytoma, one case of leiomyoma, one case of inflammatory pseudotumor, and one case of cyst with hematoma and organization.Fifty-two cases of RCC showed homogenous or inhomogeous, equal, slightly lower, slightly higher or mixed density on unenhanced scan, inhomogenous obvious enhancement after administration of contrast media. And the most obviously enhanced portion of renal carcinomas were isodense or slightly hyperdense relative to adjacent renal cortex in corticomedullary phase. Conclusion CT is an important radiologic approach to diagnose and differentially diagnose malignant or benign kidney mass. For those patients with benign mass that is not a typical case on radiology, the preoperative needle biopsy or intraoperative frozen section pathological diagnosis is the key to avoid misdiagnose and mistake resection of the kidney, and choose the proper treatment approach to avoid unnecessary kidney radical resection.

Journal of Applied Clinical Pediatrics 2006;0(24):-
Objective To study the long-term neurodevelopment in term neonates with hyperbilirubinemia and explore the predictive value of cerebrospinal fluid neuron specific enolase (CSF-NSE) on long-term neurodevelopment outcome. Methods A mental and psychomotor scale for 0-4 years old was performed to evaluate the intelligence development of 39 neonates with hyperbilirubinemia and 39 randomly selected healthy controls when they were at 3 to 24 months old. The former were tested for the level of CSF-NSE in jaundice climax. Results There was significant difference between 2 groups in total development quotient (DQ) tested at 3 month and 24 month old (P=0, 0.047). It was shown that the DQ scores for fine activity and social behavior were significantly lower in the study group than those in the control group (Pa=0). Furthermore, within the hyperbilirubinemia group, CSF-NSE was significantly associated with DQ of 3 month and 24 month old, while there was not association with TSB. The correlation coefficients were -0.46(P=0.04) and -0.32(P=0.047),respectively.Conclusions Hyperbilirubinemia may influence long-term neurodevelopment of term infants and CSF-NSE can predict this outcome.

The traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) theory of "treating heart and brain diseases with same methods (Nao Xin Tong Zhi: NXTZ)" has great significance to the treatment of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. It has been proven effective by a great deal of clinical researches. However, the underlying mechanism for this theory is still unclear. To provide insights into the potential mechanism of "NXTZ", this study attempts to deeply investigate the mechanism from two representative cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, coronary heart disease (CHD) and cerebral apoplexy. First, various data resources were integrated to obtain different types of biomedical entities including drugs, targets, pathways and diseases. Then, three different approaches including text mining, biological network and enrichment analysis were utilized to recognize the potential common features between CHD and cerebral apoplexy, and the corresponding functions of drugs which could treat both diseases, thus unveiling the mechanism of NXTZ.
