Objective To study the apoptosis of the intervertebral disc cells and its related factors. Methods Thirty-six 4 months old male Sprague-Dawley(SD) rats weighing 230-261 g were randomly divided into streptozotocin (STZ)-induced group and control group. There were 18 rats in each group. The diabetes mellitus (DM) was induced by a single intraperitoneal injection of STZ solution (40 mg/kg), while in the control group, the same volume of the sodium citrate buffer was injected. The blood glucose level was measured 72 hours later by testing the blood samples from the tail vein. The standard for the diabetes mellitus was above 16.7 mmol/L. The rats were sacrificed 1, 3 and 4 months later with 6 at each time interval in two groups respectively. One lumbar intervertebral disc was obtained for the measurement of the apoptotic percentage with the flow cytometry, two discs for the measurement of the pentosidine with high performance liquid chromatography for each rat. Objective To investigate the effect of curcumin on renal interstitial fibrosis following unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO), and compare the effects of Curcumin with that of Enalapril. Method UUO rat model was used. Male Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups with 8 rats each:shame-operated group (0.9% saline solution), model group (dimethyl sulphoxide, DMSO), Curcumin treatment group [curcumin 100 mg/(kg?d)], and Enalapril treatment group [enalapril 10 mg/(kg?d)]. All rats were killed 4 w after surgery. The degree of tubulointerstitial fibrosis was scored by HE and Masson staining. The sites and levels of protein expression of TGF-?1, CTGF and TIMP-1 were detected by immunohistochemistry staining. Result Compared with those of shame-operated group, the blood urea nitrogen level was significantly increased (P 0.05). Conclusion Pharmacological effects of Curcumin or Enalapril on unilateral ureteral obstruction rats are quite similar. These effects may result from the down-regulation of TGF-?1, CTGF and TIMP-1 expression in kidney tissue.

Background Bilateral congenital cataract is one of the vision-threating diseases during infant age.Intraocular lens (IOL) implantation is an ideal refraction correction method for children who have already received bilateral cataract extraction.However,the timing and effectiveness of secondary IOL implantation are still under debate.Objective This study was to analyze the visual changes and affecting factors before and after secondary IOL implantation and explore the operative timing.Methods The clinical data of 58 eyes of 29 patients who received bilateral cataract extraction-refractive correction and vision training-secondary IOL implantation in Peking University People's Hospital from January 2012 to December 2014 were retrospectively analyzed.All the patients received bilateral cataract extraction and posterior capsulotomy with anterior vitrectomy during their first year of life firstly,followed by the wearing of refractive spectacles or visual training,and secondary IOL implantation was simultaneously performed until ＞2 years old.Best corrected visual acurity (BCVA) (LogMAR) was examined at 1 week before and 3 months after secondary surgery under the mydriasis.Changes,distribution alternation of BCVA and the relationship of visual prognosis with preoperative visual acuity were evaluated.Results The average age at surgery of the patients was (3.26±2.07) months and that at secondary IOL implantation was (4.79± 1.38) years,with the operative interval of (4.28± 1.33) years.The BCVA before and after secondary IOL implantation was 0.790± 0.422 and 0.570±0.307 respectively,showing a significant difference between them (t =3.223,P＜0.001).The number of eyes with BCVA ≥ 0.5 after surgery was significantly more than that before surgery (x2=53.931,P＜0.001).A positive correlation in unilateral BCVA was seen between before and after secondary IOL implantation (R2 =0.232,F =17.037,P ＜ 0.001).Conclusions A systemic management of bilateral cataract extractionrefractive correction and vision training-secondary IOL implantation for congenital cataract is beneficial to BCVA improvement and amblyopia treatment,and it should be performed as early as possible on the premise of ensuring the safety of life.Secondary IOL implantation should be timely carried out for aphakic children with poor compliance and outcomes during vision training after congenital cataract extraction.

Objective To analyze the appropriate time selection of pregnancy and delivery in women with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE ). Methods Twenty-nine pregnancies in women with SLE in our hospital from 1998 to 2003 were retrospectively analyzed regarding the selection of appropriate time of pregnancy and delivery. Results All patients did not take any cytotoxic medicine for at least 6 months before pregnancy. Twenty-three conceptions occurred when SLE was inactive for at least 1 year. Two conceptions occurred when SLE was active without doctors' agreement SLE was diagnosed during pregnancy in the remaining 4 cases. The condition of all patients fluctuated and the gestational time at delivery ranged from 30 to 38 weeks after we modified the doses of glucocorticoid (prednisone). Among totally 29 living neonates, eight were premature neonates, three were FGR and one had serious congenital heart disease. Two neonates died of complications in early stage of neonatal period. None of the 29 neonates from all patients had neonatal lupus. Conclusion Pregnancy safety will be improved obviously if the condition of SLE is controlled and the patients are given reasonable doses of glucocorticoid and intensive monitoring. If pharmacotherapy does not work well and the condition threatens the safety of mother and fetus, or the fetus has matured, termination of pregnancy should be done on time, which reduces maternal complications and improves the perinatal mortality rate. The gestational time should be 34 to 38 weeks.

Result Compared with shame-operated group, the serum urea nitrogen level was significantly increased (P 0.05). Conclusion The pharmacological effects of curcumin and enalapril may be partly mediated by inhibiting the transdifferentiation of renal tubular epithelial cells towards myofibroblast in UUO rats.

Patch tests were performed in 215 cases with contact dermatitis and 59 cases with noncontact dermatitis who visited the clinic of Xili Hospital, Shenzhen.Results showed that top four allergen for them were 0.1% Merthiolate, 5% nickel sulfate, 7% aromatic compounds and 1% formaldehyde in sequence.There was significant difference in occurrence of dermatitis at the hands, trunk, extremities,face, and periumbilicus caused by these four kinds of allergen (P ＜0.01 ), with 0.1% Merthiolate mainly causing dermatitis at the face, hands, trunk and extremities, 5% nickel sulfate causing dermatitis at the periumbilicus, trunk and extremities, 7% aromatic compounds causing dermatitis at the hands, trunk,extremities and face, whereas 1% formaldehyde mainly causing facial dermatitis.Concentration of pentyl acetate and rosin spirit used for patch tests should be 20 % and 25 %, respectively.

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis (CMVR) is a common opportunistic infection of the eye after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in patients with hematological diseases. It often occurs within 3 months after the operation, with CMV activation and high blood CMV peaks. It often occurs on patients with long-term CMV viremia, human leukocyte antigen incompatible transplantation, unrelated donor transplantation, haploid transplantation, childhood hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, delayed lymphocyte engraftment, acute and chronic graft-versus-host disease after surgery. The visual prognosis of patients is related to the area of CMVR lesions on the retina, the number of quadrants involved, whether the macula is involved, and the CMV load of the vitreous body is involved, and it is not related to whether the Epstein-Barr virus infection is combined with blood and vitreous humor. The incidence of CMVR is increasing year by year. It is helpful that paying attention to systemic risk factors and epidemiology can provide more effective guidance for ophthalmologists during diagnosis and treatment, help patients improve the prognosis of vision, and reduce or even avoid the occurrence of blindness caused by CMVR.

ObjectiveTo compare the safety and efficacy of combined thrombolysis and systemic anticoagulation therapy for the treatment of cerebral venous and sinus thrombosis (CVST).MethodsA retrospective review of consecutive inpatients with CVST was undertaken. Patients were divided into two groups,combined thrombolysis group (CTG) and systemic anticoagulation group (SAG).CTG underwent improved thrombolysis scheme which included mechanical thrombus maceration and unremitting microdosis urokinase injection into the venous sinus besides low molecular weight heparin anticoagulation.Neurological deficits before and after treatment were graded with the National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS).Functional outcomes at discharge were graded on the modified Rankin Scale (mRS).ResultsThere were 30 cases in CTG ( male =9) and 86 cases in SAG ( male =23 ).There was no significant difference of neurological deficits before treatment between two groups(0-19 vs 0-17,Z =-0.474,P =0.636).After treatment,NIHSS and mRS at discharge were significantly decreased in CTG compared to SAG.There was no significant difference on the incidence of intracerebral hemorrhage.Conclusions Combined thrombolysis is better than systemic anticoagulation in improving neurological function.Combined thrombolysis does not increase incidence of ICH compared to systemic anticoagulation.
