Objective To investigate the correlation between the source of Schistosoma japonicum infections and sociological factors among mobile populations in Haining City, so as to provide insights into the management of schistosomiasis among mobile populations in Haining City. Methods A total of 12 villages were randomly sampled from 8 townships and 4 subdistricts in Haining City. The mobile populations from schistosomiasis-endemic areas were detected for S. japonicum infections using serological tests. In addition, the awareness of schistosomiasis prevention and control knowledge was investigated using a questionnaire survey. Results A total of 1 019 mobile populations were investigated in 12 villages from Haining City, and 23 sero-positives were found, with a positive rate of 2.26%; however, no egg-positives were detected. Logistic regression analysis showed that the mobile populations with original occupations of aquaculture and husbandry were more likely to be sero-positive. The mobile populations had an overall low awareness rate of schistosomiasis prevention and control knowledge, and a higher rate was seen in sero-positive than in sero-negatives. Conclusions The mobile populations with original occupations of aquaculture and husbandry were the key for the surveillance of source of S. japonicum infections. The health education should be intensified to improve the awareness of schistosomiasis prevention and control knowledge among mobile populations.

BACKGROUND:Overweight and obesity can lead to a disorder of sex hormone in men. The increase in female hormone levels may inhibit the synthesis and secretion of male hormone, increase fat accumulation and form a vicious circle. Exercise can effectively reduce body fat. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of different exercise loads on sex hormone and the quality of sperm in obese male mice. METHODS: Weanling male C57BL/6J mice were divided into normal control group and obesity group. Mice in the obesity group were given high fat diet for 10 weeks to establish mouse model of obesity. The amount of food and water was recorded daily. Body weight was weighed once every week. After model induction, models were assigned to obesity moderate load exercise group and obesity high load exercise group. These models did exercises for 8 weeks. Body length was measured. Body weight, abdominal fat, testis, epididymis and seminal vesicle were weighed. Sperm activity and motility were observed by the sperm counting method in the epididymis tail. Enzyme linked immunosorbent assay was used to measure serum progesterone, folicle stimulating hormone, testosterone and estradiol. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:Compared with the normal control group, body weight, abdominal fat weight, and lee’s index were increased (P < 0.01); the coefficient of testis and seminal vesicle were significantly decreased (P < 0.01); serum levels of luteinizing hormone, folicle stimulating hormone and testosterone were significantly decreased and estradiol level was significantly increased (P< 0.05); sperm count and activity were significantly decreased in the obesity group (P < 0.01). Compared with the obesity group, body weight, abdominal fat weight and lee’s index were significantly decreased (P < 0.05 orP < 0.01); the coefficient of testis and seminal vesicle were significantly increased in the obesity moderate load exercise group and obesity high load exercise group (P < 0.05 orP < 0.01). Serum luteinizing hormone, folicle stimulating hormone and testosterone levels were significantly increased (P < 0.05 orP < 0.01); estradiol levels were significantly decreased (P < 0.05); sperm count and activity were significantly increased (P < 0.01,P < 0.05) in the obesity moderate load exercise group. Compared with the obesity moderate load exercise group, abdominal fat weight and lee’s index were significantly reduced (P < 0.05); serum luteinizing hormone, folicle stimulating hormone, testosterone, sperm count and activity were decreased in the obesity high load exercise group (P < 0.01). These results indicate that long-term high fat diet leads to early obesity in males, inhibits the development of the reproductive gland and reproductive organs, and causes the decrease of the level of male hormone and sperm quality. Long-term moderate load exercise effectively reduces body fat, improves the inhibitory effect on male reproductive organs and glands, and relieves the negative effect of obesity on reproductive function. The effect of long-term large load exercise on reducing body fat is better than medium load exercise, but it has little effect on improving the level of male hormone in obese mice or on relieving the negative effect of obesity on reproductive function, even has a tendency to aggravate.

The objective of this study was to construct an improved thioredoxin fusion protein expression system, and express the cathelicidin-derived peptide, Lf-CATH2. The improved fusion vector Lf-CATH2-pET32α(-TS) was successfully constructed by firstly deleting the thrombin site and S tag from the pET-32α vector, then inserting the Lf-CATH2 plus a thrombin site instead. Afterwards, Lf-CATH2 was expressed in Escherichia coli as fusion protein. After the cleavage by thrombin, Lf-CATH2 was released and subsequently separated using affinity chromatography. The antimicrobial activity of purified Lf-CATH2 was also examined. The improved expression vector significantly increased enzyme cleavage efficiency by 37%, and Lf-CATH2 could be expressed in high yield and maintain the biological activity. This novel thioredoxin fusion protein expression system enables a quick production of high-yield bioactive cationic peptides like cathelicidins.

Objective:To determine whether heme oxygenase-2(HO-2) gene deletion can attenuate oxidative injury induced by free Fe2+. Methods:Stereotactic injection of 10 μl sterile FeCl2 (10 mmol/L) was made into the right striata of HO-2 knockout mice and wild-type mice. Brain edema severity was measured at 24 h. Cell viability, protein oxidation, and lipid oxidation of the basal ganglia were determined at 72 h. Western blot analysis was applied for heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) measurement. Results: Brain water content significantly decreased in HO-2 knockout mice at 24 h compared with wild-type mice. Protein oxidation and lipid oxidation significantly decreased in HO-2 knockout mice at 72 h compared with wild-type mice, while the striatal cell viability increased significantly. HO-1 expression at baseline and 72 h was also similar to that in wild-type mice. Conclusion:These results show that HO-2 gene deletion can protect basal ganalia cells from free Fe2+ -mediated oxidative stress injury, suggesting that selective inhibition of HO-2 may have a protective effect on brain oxidative injury.

Objective To assess the value of magnetic resonance diffusion weighted imaging(DWI) and apparent diffusion coefficients(ADC) values of hepatic alveolar echinococcosis(HAE) in children. Methods 20 cases of children(≤14 years) with HAE were collected in this restrospective study.PNM staging was determined, the HAE peripheral area of DWI lesions with different P stages was observed, and the ADC value of the peripheral area was measured. The comparison of alveococcus lesions in different stages of DWI with continuous edge degree and ADC value difference was done to evaluate the growth activity. Results There were 5 cases of P1 lesions, 7 cases of P2 lesions, 2 cases of P3 lesions and 6 cases of P4 lesions.DWI features of peripheral area were as follows: High signal ring band between HAE lesion edge and adjacent normal hepatic parenchyma was observed.P1 lesions showed almost complete obviously high signal peripheral area, indicating the most active proliferation, P2 and P3 lesions of peripheral area were continuous and with high signal, and still had obvious growth activity.P4 lesions of peripheral area were not continuous, while the signal decreased, indicating the activity also decreased. The highest ADC value was detected in P1 lesions group of and the ADC value of P2 lesions group were lower than P1, and the ADC value of P4 lesions group were the lowest.P3 lesions samples were too small and thus no statistical analysis was done.Differences of ADC value between the three groups were statistically significant (P<0.05).Conclusion DWI image features could be used to assesse the growth activity of HAE in children with different stages to a certain extent.ADC values measurement provides important reference value for evaluating the growth activity at various stages of the lesions.
