K. There was no significant difference in the yield among the treatments of N+K, CK, P, N+P, and N, but the results of these five treatments were significantly higher than that of P+K and K. In addition, cichoric acid content did not considerably changed after treatment of various fertilizer combinations. For the second harvest date the yield of N, N+K, P, and N+P were 47.7%, 35.4%, 33.8%, and 12.3% higher respectively than that of CK, the yield of N+P+K, P+K, and K were 7.7%, 10.8%, and 28.5% lower respectively than that of CK. There was significant difference in the yield between the treatment of N and CK, the yield of K was significantly lower than that of CK. Conclusion The results indicate that cichoric acid content is not significantly affected by the treatment of various fertilizer combinations and the yield is strongly influenced by N fertilizer, weakly by P fertilizer, on the contrary the application of potassium chloride results in a decrease in yield.

UNLABELLEDTo investigate the effects of Shizhang Cataplasm (SC) and Xuzhang Cataplasm (XC) in treating liver cirrhosis caused ascites of excessive syndrome (ES) type and deficient syndrome (DS) type respectively.
METHODSAll the 77 patients (37 of ES type and 40 of DS type) enrolled were treated by conventional treatment but with restrictive use of diuretics. SC and XC were given respectively to 26 patients of ES type and 26 of DS type additionally by umbilical sticking, they were regarded as the treated group, and those (11 of ES type and 14 of DS type) not received the cataplasm treatment were regarded as the control group. The changes of symptoms, body weight, abdominal perimeter and amount of urine before and after treatment were observed, and amount of ascites was examined with B-ultrasound to evaluate the efficacy according to comprehensive grading criteria. Also, the toxicity was observed.
RESULTSSixty-two cases completed the full course, 15 were withdrawn. As compared with the corresponding control group, body weight, abdominal perimeter and amount of ascites decreased, while amount of urine and flatus discharging increased remarkably in the treated group (P < 0.05). The comprehensive efficacy in patients of ES type was better than that in DS type (P < 0.05). The effective rate of grade I/II was 7.1% and 9.1% for patients in the control group of DS type and ES type respectively, while it was 57.2% and 69.2% in the treated group of DS and ES type respectively. Better therapeutic effect was shown in patients of ES type treated with SC.
CONCLUSIONSC and XC showed good assistant effects in treating patients with liver cirrhosis caused ascites of ES and DS type respectively.

OBJECTIVETo explore the relationship between germ cell apoptosis and the expression as well as the distribution of Sertoli cell vimentin induced by local exposure to heat.
METHODSLocal short-term exposure of prepubertal male rats testis to heat (43 degrees C for 15 min). Histochemical method was used to observe morphological characteristics of seminiferous tubule. The distribution and expression of Sertoli cell cytoskeletons were analyzed by immunohistochemistry and germ cell apoptosis was evaluated by TUNEL technique at different hour-intervals.
RESULTSAfter 2 h and 4 h heat exposure, the disattachment phenomenon between Sertoli cell and spermatogonia occurred. Spermatogonia arranged in disorder and displaced away from the basement membrane of seminiferous tubules. Immunohistochemical staining showed that vimentin positive staining was seen radiating from the Sertoli cell perinuclear region with apical "spoke-like" pattern in controls. There was an intense vimentin immunoreactivity surrounding Sertoli cell nuclei along with the collapse of the apical extensions in 2 h group, but no significant difference compared with the controls. The expressions of vimentin in 12 h and 24 h groups were higher than those of the controls (P <0.01), respectively. TUNEL showed that incidence of apoptosis was observed to increases markedly in 12 h and 24 h groups, but it was found that the incidences of apoptotic events were decreased in these two groups compared with the controls.
CONCLUSIONThe changes of expression and distribution of Sertoli cell vimentin filaments correlate with the increased germ cell apoptosis. Local heat may disrupt spermatogenesis by injuring Sertoli cell directly.
