4.HIV infection and pregnancy
Journal of Vietnamese Medicine 2001;267(12):29-36
The increasing rate of HIV infection among women, obstetrician-gynecologist should be prepared to counsel patients and recommend testing for the virus to all women who are pregnant or are seeking prepregnancy counseling. Management of HIV infection is directed toward stabilization on HIV disease, preventation of opportunistic infections, and preventation of perinatal transmission. Specific aspects of management are based on the clinical condition of the patient. Clinicans should balance the theoretic risks of fetal HIV inoculation posed by invasive procedures (percutaneous umbilical cord blood sampling, chronic villus sampling, amniocentesis) against the benefit of the procedure.

5.Risk factors for HIV-1 seropositivity in injection drug users under 30 years old
Journal of Preventive Medicine 2000;10(4):5-13
A cross-sectional survey of drug users who were selected by "snowballing" method between March 15 and May 30, 1999 in Haiphong City was conducted. Subjects (n=520: 514 males and 6 females) were interviewed and provided blood spescimens for HIV-1 antibody testing. Mean age of the subjects was 25 years, sixty-one percent (319/520) reported injecting drug. The 218 subjects (68%) were ever shared needles. The HIV-1 prevalence in Injecting Drug Users (IDUs) was 74%. Factors related to the presence of HIV antibody were sharing needles (OR: 4.12; 95%CI: 1.82-9.31), and injecting more than 31 times per month (OR: 2.37; 95%CI: 1.04-5.42). Extramarital sex within the last six months was reported by 44% of single and 24% of married IDUs. The high HIV-1 prevalence in IDUs suggests that preventive interventions for risk reductions of HIV-1 transmission are urgently needed in these populations.

6.Some characteristics of subtype HIV-1 in the south of Vietnam
Journal of Medical Research 1998;6(2):34-37
The subtypes of HIV-1 from 106 HIV infected persons were determined by using the nested PCR method. Some results might be drawn: the HIV-1 samples from 83% of the investigated persons were E subtypes. The coexistence of B- and E- subtypes were observed in 8 out of 106 examined patients (7.6%). Non E- non B subtypes HIV-1 were also shown in 5.7% of the studied subjects. 40% of the newborns of mothers suffered from HIV-1 infection were infected. Their HIV-1 were all E-subtypes.

10.Observing of the progression of HIV infected intravenous drug users in Hochiminh city (1995-1997)
Journal of Medical Research 2000;11(1):13-18
Preliminary survey on some parameters of immune system (humoral & cellular immunity) of 74 persons who were HIV (-) addicts in HCM city was carried out on the concentrations of immunoglobuline (Ig)/serum, Mantoux test, count of lymphocytes, T-CD4, T CD8, the result indicated that there were reduction of T-CD4 number in HIV(-) addicts, dysfunction of humoral and cellular immune in the HIV infected addicts during disease progressing. The time of progression of HIV/AIDS - IDU is rather short in this stage and the mortality rate after the first year of AIDS in HCM city was high. Further studies are necessary.
