Thalassemia is inherited hemolytic anemia caused by globin production disorder,clinically known as beta thalassemia and alpha thalassemia resulted from beta and alpha chain synthesis disorder.Significant anemic clinical manifestations are observed in intermediate -level and severe -level patients with the 2 types of anemia, affecting greatly the growth and life quality of children patients who need blood transfusion to stay alive.The incidence rate of thalassemia is as high as 7% -20% in South China,so the prevention and standaridized treatment of thalasse-mia and the management over target population draw more attention.This paper is a review on the latest development of blood transfusion,chelation therapy,health education,birth intervention for thalassemia.
2.Effect of rosiglitazone on serum NOS/NO in apolipoprotein E knockout mice

Objective To observe the effect of rosiglitazone on serum NOS/NO in apolipoprotein(apo) E knockout mice.Methods Twenty eight-week-old apoE knockout mice were intragastrically administrated 0.2 ml 5% sodium carboxymethycellulose for 12 weeks to establish the animal models of atherosclerosis,in which half of mice simultaneously received 10 mg?kg~(-1)?d~(-1) rosiglitazone as treatment.Ten wildtype mice were used as the normal control group.All mice were fed on normal chow diet.After 12 weeks,aorta were used for histomorphometric analysis by means of HE.Vessel blood was collected for plasma lipid,NO and NOS.Results Histomorphometric analysis showed that the area of atherosclerosis plaque in mice receiving rosiglitazone was significantly smaller than the mouse models of atherosclerosis,while the plasm lipid,NO and NOS were higher.Conclusion Rosiglitazone can inhibit the development of atherosclerosis,which mechanism is related to the protection of vascular endothelial function.
3.Gallbladder carcinoma: CT staging and operation resectability

Objective To analyze the CT staging and evaluate its role in assessing the resectability of the gallbladder carcinoma.Methods The CT scans of 47 patients who had pathologically confirmed gallbladder carcinoma were retrospectively reviewed and the CT stages of gallbladder carcinoma were used to evaluate the resectability.Results Before operation,three patients were in stage Ⅰ(6.4%,3/47),14stageⅡ(29.8%,14/47),10 stageⅢ(21.7%,3/47),20 stage Ⅳ(42.6%,20/47),however,after operation,three patients were in stage Ⅰ(6.4%,3/47),14 stageⅡ(29.8%,14/47),8 stage Ⅲ(17.0%%,8/47),22 stage Ⅳ(42.6%,20/47).The accurate rate of CT staging confirmed by operation was 91.5%(43/47).The treatment procedures of gallbladder carcinomas included radical operation,palliative excision and exploratory laparotomy.For 47 patients with gallbladder carcinomas,radical operation was performed in 30 cases(3 stage Ⅰ,14 stageⅡ,7 stage Ⅲ,6 stage Ⅳ),palliative excision 15 cases(1 stage Ⅲ,14 stage Ⅳ),exploratory laporatory 2 eases(2 stage Ⅳ).Conclusion The staging of gallbladder carcinoma with CT may provide definite value in evaluating respectability of gallbladder carcinoma.
5.Diagnostic value of pulmonary tuberculosis to detect the anti mycobacterium tuberculosis antibody in Serum by the mycobacterium tuberculosis protein Chip and the M.tuberculosis Antibody Colloidal Gold Diagnostic Kit

Objective To evaluate the Diagnostic value of pulmonary tuberculosis to detecting the anti Mycobacterium tuberculosis antibody with serum samples by the mycobacterium tuberculosis protein Chip and the M.tuberculosis Antibody Colloidal Gold Diagnostic Kit.Methods Application of mycobacterium tuberculosis protein Chip and the M.tuberculosis Antibody Colloidal Gold Diagnostic Kit to detecting the anti Mycobacterium tuberculosis antibody with serum samples,These serum samples are from 110 cases of tuberculosis patients,60 cases of lung disease and 60 cases of healthy people.Results Mycobacterium tuberculosis protein chip sensitivity was 73.6% (81/110),the specificity was 93.3% (112/120),the diagnostic kit for detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis antibody colloidal gold assay sensitivity was 64.5% (71/110)and a specificity of 91.7% (110/120),both the sensitivity and specificity compared to no significant difference (P > 0.05).Conclusions The Tuberculosis protein chip and the M.tuberculosis Antibody Colloidal Gold Diagnostic Kit to detect serum Mycobacterium tuberculosis antibodies for diagnosis of TB has a high sensitivity and specificity.Both can be used for the auxiliary diagnosis of tuberculosis.
6.Relationship between endothelial damage and p120-catenin in paraquat intoxication and the protective effect of mangiferin

Objective To investigate the relationship between endothelial damage and p120-catenin (p120-ctn) in a model of paraquat intoxication,and the modulatory effect of mangiferin on p120-ctn.Methods Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were cultured in two compartment spreading apparatus in vitro.The endothelial cells were divided into three groups:control group (cultured in DMEM with 10% fetal bovine serum),paraquat group (paraquat was added to the medium with final concentration of 0.05 μmol/L) and mangiferin group (cultured in medium with addition of paraquat for 30 minutes,then mangiferin was added in a final concentration of 20 μmol/L).The cellular permeability at 6,12,24,48,72 hours after culture in the three groups was measured.The expressions of p120-ctn 1A,p120-ctn 3A mRNA and p120-ctn protein were measured by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and Western Blot analysis.The distribution of p120-ctn protein was observed by immunofluorescence.Results Compared with control group,cellular permeability in paraquat and mangiferin groups were increased with prolongation of time,and peaked at 72 hours [(29.86 ± 3.98)%,(24.39 ± 2.79)% vs.(11.71 ± 1.67)%,both P<0.05].The cellular permeability was significantly lower in mangiferin group than that in paraquat group at different time points (all P<0.05).At 6 hours after intoxication,the expressions of p120-ctn 1A,p 120-ctn 3A mRNA (gray value) and p 120-ctn protein (gray value) were significantly lower in paraquat group than those in control group (p120-ctn 1A mRNA:0.150 ± 0.024 vs.0.433 ± 0.024,p120-ctn 3A mRNA:0.316 ± 0.043 vs.0.701 ±0.020,p120-ctn protein:0.485 ±0.031 vs.0.763 ±0.038,all P<0.01).The expressions of p120-ctn 1A,p120-ctn 3A mRNA and p120-ctn protein were significantly higher in mangiferin group than those in paraquat group from 6 hours on (p120-ctn 1A mRNA:0.281 ± 0.021 vs.0.150 ± 0.024,p120-ctn 3A mRNA:0.602 ± 0.042 vs.0.316 ± 0.043,p120-ctn protein:0.675 ± 0.031 vs.0.485 ± 0.031,all P<0.01),and they were gradually increased with prolongation of time,and peaked at 72 hours (p120-ctn 1A mRNA:1.376 ±0.128 vs.0.150 ± 0.024,p120-ctn 3A mRNA:1.251 ± 0.059 vs.0.316 ± 0.043,p120-ctn protein:0.844 ± 0.050 vs.0.485 ± 0.031,all P< 0.01).Under upright fluorescence microscope,p120-ctn was mainly distributed in the cell membrane in control group,with a slight expression in cytoplasm,and no expression in the nuclei.With prolongation of time,p120-ctn expression in the cell membrane was gradually decreased in paraquat group,while it was increased in the cytoplasm and nuclei,with blurring of cell membrane and widening of cellular gap.p120-ctn expression was improved on the cell membrane in mangiferin group at corresponding time points,with decreased in expression in nuclei and cytoplasm.Conclusion The p120-ctn protein plays an important role in the enhancement of endothelial permeability in paraquat intoxication,and mangiferin may attenuate endothelial injury in paraquat intoxication possibly through modulation of p 120-ctn protein.
7.Advances of Particles/Cells Magnetic Manipulation in Microfluidic Chips

Magnetic manipulation of particles/cells in microfluidic chips is a promising research field.This paper stated the operation mechanism and the main means of manipulation, including separation, concentration, capture, arrangement and assembly.Especially, the concept of particles/cells separation was emphasized with different criteria, like sizes, shapes, and magnetic properties.In addition, the effects of the channel geometry, the intensity and distribution of the magnetic field, and the types of magnetic liquid (paramagnetic salt solutions and ferrofluids) on the performance of the magnetic manipulation were also compared.The prospective to the prospect of magnetic manipulation about particles/cells in microfluidic chip was also depicted.
8.Therapeutic Observation of Navel Acupuncture for Lumbar Spinal Stenosis

Objective To observe the clinical efficacy of navel acupuncture in treating lumbar spinal stenosis. Method A total of 120 patients with lumbar spinal stenosis were randomized into a treatment group and a control group, 60 cases each. The treatment group was intervened by navel acupuncture based on syndrome differentiation of traditional Chinese medicine, while the control group was intervened by oral administration of Bulleyaconitine A tablets, 10 d as a treatment course, for successive 2 courses. The Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) was observed before and after the intervention, and the clinical efficacies were compared.Result The total effective rate was 98.3% in the treatment group versus 76.6% in the control group, and the between-group difference was statistically significant (P<0.01). The VAS scores were significantly changed after the intervention in both groups (P<0.05); the VAS score in the treatment group was significantly different from that in the control group after the treatment (P<0.05).Conclusion Navel acupuncture is an effective approach in treating lumbar spinal stenosis.
9.The relationship between ultrasonic feature of lower limb peripheral nerve and Toronto clinical scoring ;system in type 2 diabetes mellitus

Objective To evaluate the morphological changes of the small nerves in lower extremity with high-resolution ultrasonography in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Methods 84 cases of T2DM patients were divided into four different groups according to TCSS score [group Ⅰ (0-5 point), group Ⅱ (6-8 point), groupⅢ (9-11 point), group Ⅳ (12-19 point)]. The ultrasonic feature of posterior tibial nerve, sural nerve and saphenous nerve were observed to observe the relationship between ultrasound findings and scoring. Results Abnormality rate admitted from ultrasound findings are as follows. In group Ⅳ, nerve abnormality rate was the highest, followed by group Ⅲ, group Ⅱ and group Ⅰ (P < 0.05). The major manifestations are obscure border between spineurium and peripheral tissue , nerve bundle mesh like structure disappearing , enlargement of posterior tibial nerve and sural nerve. There was no statistical difference in irregular abnormality rate (P > 0.05). The saphenous nerve epineurium abnormality increased in group Ⅱ and Ⅲ compared with group Ⅰ and Ⅳ(P <0.05). Abnormality rate of 3 neural ultrasound decreased in line with sural nerve, posterior tibial nerve and saphenous nerve. Conclusions Certain correlation was observed between TCSS and never ultrasonic feature in T2DM patients. The higher TCSS scores is, the greater chance of presence of abnormal sonographic features of nerves will be. The sural nerve abnormality was higher than others.
10.Assessment and analysis of health-related quality of life in convalescents of severe acute respiratory syndrome

Objective To evaluate the health-related quality of life in convalescents of severe acute respiratory syndrome.Methods Health-related quality of life evaluated by SF-36 scale was performed on 68 SARS patients discharged from hospital in the first and sixth month during 2003-05~2003-12 in Department of Respiratory Medicine of Beijing Friendship Hospital.Results In the first month,SARS patients had a significant impairment in both physical and psychological functioning.Physical condition improved significantly six months later,but there was no obvious improvement in mental health.Conclusion Psychological treatment should be included.The SF-36 scale is a valid,sensitive and reliable tool for assessing the quality of life for SARS patients.
