Methods A total of 198 myopia cases (involving 393 eyes) were randomized into control group and treatment group. The control group was given eyesight examination after mydriasis with atropine sulfate eye gel and wearing myopia glasses for long distance. The treatment group was given eyesight examination after mydriasis with atropine sulfate eye gel, wearing myopia glasses for short distance, and massage therapy. Eyesight examination was carried out once every 2 months and lasted for one continuous year. The changes of diopter were compared between the two groups. Results ( 1) Of 194 affected eyes from the treatment group, 96 eyes were effective, 68 were stabilized, and the effective rate was 45.5%and stabilizing rate was 35.1%. Of 199 affected eyes from the control group, 3 eyes were effective, 9 were stabilized, and the effective rate was 1.5%and stabilizing rate was 4.5%. The differences of effective and stabilizing rates were significant between the two groups ( P<0.01). ( 2) After treatment, the myopia diopter was increased in the control group ( P<0.01 compared with that before treatment) , and the myopia diopter in the treatment group maintained stable ( P>0.05). The difference of diopter was significant between the two groups (P<0.01). (3) The difference of astigmatism was insignificant in both groups before and after treatment and between the two groups after treatment (P>0.05). Conclusion Mydriasis with atropine sulfate eye gel, wearing myopia glasses for short or long distance, and focal massage therapy show certain preventive effect on myopia in teenagers and children by controlling the development of myopia diopter.

AIM: To evaluate the protective effects of mycophenolate mofetil on the kidneys of type 2 diabetic rats and discover their mechanisms. METHODS: Wistar rats were divided into three groups, such as normal control rats, diabetic rats, and diabetic rats in the treatment with mycophenolate mofetil (MMF, 15 mg?kg -1 ?d -1 ). Thirteen weeks later, urinary albumin excretory rate (UAE), creatine clearance (Ccr), blood glucose, blood insulin and blood lipid were measured, and kidney pathology was observed. Inmmunohistochemistry was used to analyze the expression of CTGF, ColI and ColⅢ. RESULTS: Mycophenolate mofetil decreased UAE, Ccr and reduced glomerular volume. The expression of CTGF and deposition of ECM decreased after diabetic rats received mycophenolate mofetil. CONCLUSION: Mycophenolate mofetil can protect the kidney of diabetic rats. Its mechanism may be related to the decrease of CTGF expression and extracellular matrix deposition in renal tissue.

OBJECTIVE This objective of this study was to investigate intranasal anatomic abnormalities in cases of contact point headaches caused by contact between the nasal septum and the lateral nasal wall,as well as the clinical outcomes in these cases treated by endoscopic sinonasal surgery. METHODS A retrospective review was performed on 58 cases that met the criteria of having contact points between the septum and the lateral nasal wall, as demonstrated by CT scans of the sinuses and endoscopic examinations. These patients underwent surgical intervention in order to correct the contact points. They were re-evaluated for clinical parameters three months after the surgical correction of their anatomic abnormalities. RESULTS Abnormal nasal septa, enlarged turbinates and other anatomic abnormalities were the most common findings in contact point headaches. Fifty-eight patients underwent surgical correction of intranasal anatomic abnormalities. After follow-up periods of 3-18 mouths, 32 patients were cured, 23 were relieved to an extent, and 3 did not benefit. A significant decrease in the severity and frequency of headaches was noted after surgery. CONCLUSION Pressure from mucosal contact between the septum and lateral nasal wall mucosa is the key cause of contact point headaches, as seen in CT scans of the sinuses and endoscopic examinations. Clinically significant pain may improve after surgical correction of intranasal anatomic abnormalities.

AIM: Changes of endoxin level, ATPase activities, intramitochondrial Ca2+ concentration, and gene expression of Na+-K+-ATPase isoforms in myocardium of rats with MIR and effect of verapamil were observed, in order to investigate mechanism of endoxin mediating intracellular calcium overload of myocytes. METHODS: Twenty four male Sprauge Dawley rats were randomized into 3 groups. Sham operation group: silk suture was threaded the left anterior descending coronary artery without ligature; MIR group (MIR): left anterior descending coronary artery was subjected to 30 min ligation followed by 45 min reperfusion; verapamil group: MIR model was given 5 mg/kg verapamil. Verapamil was injected via femoral vein 5 min before reperfusion. Left ventricle myocardium samples were processed immediately after reperfusion in order to measure the activities of Na+-K+-ATPase and Ca2+-Mg2+-ATPase, endoxin level, and intramitochondrial Ca2+ concentration. The levels of ?1, ?2, ?3 and ?1 isoforms of Na+-K+-ATPase were measured by immunohistochemical assay. RESULTS: After MIR, the level of endoxin in myocardium was substantially increased; the activities of Na+-K+-ATPase and Ca2+-Mg2+-ATPase in myocardial membrane were significantly decreased while the concentration of intramitochondrial Ca2+ was increased; the levels of the ?1, ?2, ?3 and ?1 isoforms of Na+-K+-ATPase were reduced markedly. Verapamil had only effect on reducing the concentration of intramitochondrial Ca2+. CONCLUSION: MIR increases endoxin secretion. The latter may depress the activity of Na+-K+-ATPase by changing the gene expression of ?1, ?2, ?3 and ?1 isoforms of Na+-K+-ATPase in myocardial membrane, inducing intramitochondrial Ca2+ overload.
