Objective To observe the effects of aging on liver and heat shock protein (HSP)70 expression in rats, and explore the role of HSP 70 in the changes of aging liver. Methods 24 healthy Sprague Dawley rats were divided into 4 groups according to age:21-day-old group,3-monthold group,12-month-old group and 18-month-old group (n=6 per group).Routine blood tests and biochemical tests were tested. Liver tissues were observed under light microscopy. The mRNA expression of HSP70 was detected by real-time PCR. Results The ratios of liver weight to body weight were decreased gradually with aging in 4 groups (0.073,0.050,0.025,0.019,respectively,t=78.016,P =0.000).Compared with those of young rats (21-day-old and 3-month-old),serum albumin levels of aged rats (12-months and 18-months) were declined [(35.0±2.7) g/L and (39.8±3.5) g/L vs.(27.3±9.3) g/L and (20.6± 1.7) g/L,t=12.233,P=0.000].Nevertheless serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) levels were increased with aging [(68.8± 23.3) U/L,(71.6 ± 19.2)U/L,( 185.9 ± 41.5) U/L,(418.6 ± 140.6) U/L,respectively,t =35.454,P=0.000].The differences in other routine biochemical indexes were not found among the age groups (P>0.05).Liver histological changes including hepatocytes disordered and vacuolization or fatty changes were detected with aging, especially in 18 month-old rats. Real-time PCR results indicated that the expression level of HSP70 mRNA was much lower in 18-month-old rats than in 12-month-old and 3-month-old rats (0.218 vs.0.220 and 0.230,P=0.000). Conclusions HSP70,as a stress protein, may play an important role in the procedure of injury and senescence of liver cell, and then can serve liver aging as one of the influential markers.

Objective Ultrasonongraphy and mammography were employed to estimate the pathological response of patients with breast cancer ,who had been accepted neoadjuvant chemotherapy .According to the pres-ent study ,we can provide additional evidence on therapeutic effect on evaluation of neoadjuvant chemotherapy and better selection of regime for breast cancer .Methods One hundred Thirty-six patients who were previously dia-gosed diagnosed with primary breast cancer were included in this study .All subjects were female with clearly pathological detection and accepted neoadjuvant chemotherapy about 4 to 6 cycles regardless of regime .The resid-ual tumor size was evaluated by mammography and /or ultrasonography before operation .Tumor size measured by image were compared with pathological size to predicting the accuracy of two types of imaging .Results Forty one of 116 records were undetectable imaging by mammogram and 19 of 106 records were undetectable by ultrasound which were considered a pathologic complete response .Sixty one(62.24%)of 98 patients who were accepted de-tection of mammogram and ultrasound would be predicted the tumor size by mammogram .Eighty three(84.69%) of 98 patients would be predicted the residual tumor by ultrasound .31 and 59 were accurately evaluated by mam-mogram and ultrasound , respectively .The result indicated that ultrasound was more accurate than mammogram (60.20%vs.31.63%,χ2 =16.11,P<0.001).The correctly rate was 92.85%(91/98)for ultrasound and 68. 37%(67/98) for mammogram. The diagnosis efficiency of ultrasound was more higher than mammogram ,even though there was no different significance between the two methods (χ2 =2.028,P=0.164).Conclusion Ultra-sonongraphy in estimating the residual tumor size after neoadjuvant chemotherapy of patients with breast cancer displays more accurately than mammography .

OBJECTIVE To investigate pathogenic bacteria isolated from children with respiratory tract infection(RTI) and bacterial resistance to commonly used antimicrobial agents in Guilin area,so as to instruct the rational use of antibiotics.METHODS Routine methods were used to isolate and identify bacteria species and samples of sputum or throat swabs were collected from children with respiratory infection in inpatient departments. The drug susceptibility tests were performed by Kirby-Bauer method.RESULTS Total 733 strains of bacteria were isolated. The Haemophilus influenzae(HI) was the most common(165 strains),followed by Escherichia coli(136 strains) and Streptococcus pyogenes(51 strains). The resistance of HI to trimetoprim-sulfa methoxazole and ampicillin was 59.39% and 36.36%,respectively.Cephalosporins and quinolones were more sensitive to HI.Imipenem, quinolones and amikacin were more sensitive to E.coli as yet.The resistant rate of Streptococcus to penicillin-G,erythromycin,clindamycin and trimetoprim-sulfa methoxazole was 56.79-69.63%.CONCLUSIONS Gram-negative bacilli are the main pathogenic bacteria in childrens respiratory tract infection. The drug resistance is conspicuous.Antibiotics for treating RTI should be selected based on pathogenic bacteria variance and the drug susceptibility test.

The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of the metformin on the formation of hepatic fibrosis in type 2 diabetic rats and discuss its mechanism of liver-protecting activity. After SD rats were fed with high-fat and high-sucrose diet for four weeks, low-dose streptozotocin (STZ) was injected intraperitoneally to make the animal mode of type 2 diabetes. Then, all diabetic rats was fed with the high-fat diet and metformin (ig, 100 mg x kg(-1)) was given orally to metformin group for four months. After the last administration, fasting blood glucose was determined. The livers were removed to calculate the hepatic coefficient and to make HE and Picro acid-Sirius red staining, immunohistochemistry (alpha-SMA and TGFbeta1) and TUNEL staining in order to evaluate the effect of metformin on the hepatic fibrosis. The animal model of type 2 diabetes with hepatic fibrosis was successfully made. Metformin can significantly alleviate the lesions of hepatic steatosis and fibrosis, markedly reduce the expressions of alpha-SMA and TGFbeta1 in liver tissue of type 2 diabetic rats. However, TUNEL staining result suggested that metformin could not reduce apoptosis of hepatocytes. The results suggest that metformin can inhibit the formation of hepatic fibrosis in type 2 diabetes.

ObjectiveThis clinical study is aimed to investigate whether levetiracetam (LEV) can improve electrocorticogram (EEG) in epileptic children epilepsy patients with better clinical manifestation but abnormal EEG findings.MethodsTotally 39 children from our neurological clinic with partial or complex partial epilepsy seizure were included in present study and assigned equally into three groups receiving different treatment:control group, sodium valproate (VPA) group, and LEV group.Their clinical symptoms had been controlled for over one year by carbamazepine ( CBZ),but EEG results showed clearly abnormal.Epileptiform discharges were observed in routine EEG exams half a month before recruiting. After recruiting, they continued to receive CBZ alone (control group) or co-treated with VPA ( VPA group) or LEV (LEVgroup),respectively.Six months later,EEG was taken again and results were analyzed.ResultsImprovement rate were 9.1% ( control group),23.1% ( VPA group),and 66.7% (LEV group),respectively;Overall statistical difference was reached among three groups ( P<0.01 ) and between control group and LEV group( P<0.012 5 ),but no statistical difference between control group and VPA group was reached ( P>0.0125).ConclusionCo-treatment of LEV in child epilepsy patients receiving CBZ can significantly decrease abnormal EEG discharge frequency during interictal period.
