Journal of Clinical Hepatology 2020;36(5):1146-1149
Homocysteine (Hcy) has attracted more and more attention in the medical field since it was found to be closely associated with cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, hypertension, diabetes, kidney diseases, skeletal system diseases, and even mental illnesses. In recent years, the application of Hcy in patients with liver fibrosis and liver cirrhosis has been taken more seriously by clinicians and researchers. This article reviews the recent research advances in the metabolic mechanism and pathophysiologic significance of Hcy in China and foreign countries and highlights the association of Hcy with liver fibrosis and liver cirrhosis and its possible mechanism.
2.Research Advances on Childhood and Adolescent Vaccinations and Seizures
Journal of Sun Yat-sen University(Medical Sciences) 2023;44(4):570-575
Vaccination for children and adolescents is an effective strategy for preventing and controlling infectious diseases. However, clinical reports showed that vaccination may be associated with epilepsy or seizures, potentially increasing public hesitancy about vaccination, and affecting vaccination coverage. At present, no evidence showed that vaccination could damage the nervous system and cause epilepsy or seizures. In this review, we explore the association of multiple vaccinations in children and adolescents with epilepsy or seizures, and further understand the safety of vaccination, thereby improving vaccine coverage in China.
3.Research Progress on the Influence of Bile Acids on the Immune Response of Hepatitis B Vaccine
Journal of Sun Yat-sen University(Medical Sciences) 2023;44(6):910-914
Hepatitis B vaccine (HepB) vaccination is the safest and most effective means of preventing hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. HepB non-response is influenced by multiple factors, and solving the problem of poor immune response after HepB vaccination is of great significance for controlling HBV infection. Bile acids play an important role in human immune regulation, and whether bile acids have an effect on the HepB immune response has not been definitively studied. This article reviews the correlation between bile acids and HepB immune response, and provides a reference for further clarifying the pathogenesis and immunoprevention of bile acids in vaccine immunity.

Journal of Southern Medical University 2008;28(11):1968-1970
OBJECTIVETo evaluate the effect of chemical lumbar sympathectomy (CLS) on relieving refractory pain in the lower limbs.
METHODSTwenty-four patients with refractory pain in the lower limbs underwent CLS under X-ray guidance, and 2 ml contrast agent was injected at 1/3 of the second L2 vertebrae (the L2 sympathetic ganglion). Lidocaine was then injected followed by injection of 7% phenol for performing CLS. The visual analog scale was used to assess the pain severity before and after CLS. The effect of CLS on relieving lower limb pain was compared with that of oral pain-relieving medication.
RESULTSThe lower limb pain was obviously relieved as shown by significantly decreased VAS scores in these patients after CLS. CLS exhibited a much more potent effect of pain relief in the lower limbs than the oral medication.
CONCLUSIONCLS produces significant analgesic effects to relieve refractory pain in the lower limbs.

5.Spontaneous discharge modulation by acetylcholine in chronically compressed rat dorsal root ganglion neurons.
Journal of Southern Medical University 2006;26(11):1568-1570
OBJECTIVETo study the effects of acetylcholine (ACh) on spontaneous discharges of compressed rat dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons.
METHODSIn chronically compressed DRG model, the spontaneous discharge of a single fiber from the DRG neuron in response to ACh treatment was recorded.
RESULTSActive spontaneous discharges were recorded in the injured DRG, and 77.9% of the injured DRG neurons responded to Ach treatment in the manner of simple excitation, or excitation followed by inhibition. The responses were enhanced with the increase of Ach concentration.
CONCLUSIONInjured DRG remains active in spontaneous discharges, which can be significantly influenced by ACh treatment.

This study was carried out to predict the possible tertiary structure alterations of p53 protein after point mutation of p53 gene condon 282 in lung cancer cells based on the latest 3D structure analysis platform series of Phyre software. It was found that the p53 gene condon 282 mutation (Arg/Leu) may destabilize the H2 helix and DNA binding in the major groove by compromising the contacts of p53 protein with the beta-hairpin of DNA binding surface.

7.Can antibiotic treatment exclude inflammation in the differential diagnosis of elevated PSA?.
National Journal of Andrology 2012;18(8):747-750
Considering that antibiotic treatment may elevated the level of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) and hence limit the specificity of PSA test for prostate cancer, urologists use empiric antibiotic treatment for men with increased PSA levels. But it is controversial whether antibiotic treatment can exclude inflammation in the differential diagnosis of PSA elevation. Some researchers have found that antibiotic treatment can decrease inflammation-induced PSA elevation and help to reduce unnecessary biopsies, while others have reported that antibiotic treatment has no significant effect on the PSA level, and the lowered level of PSA following antibiotic treatment does not mean the decreased risk of prostate cancer. Further researches are needed to confirm the value of antibiotic treatment before biopsy.

Chinese Journal of Pharmacology and Toxicology 2003;17(3):161-166
AIM To study whether cyproheptadine(Cyp) affects endocrine functions in reproductive system with gender difference. METHODS Sixty SD rats were randomly distributed into 3 groups according to gender, respectively, and they were administered NS(5 mL*kg-1*d-1), Cyp 2.4, 4.8 mg*kg-1*d-1 accordingly by ig for 14 d or 21 d. The serum levels of luteinizing hormone(LH), follicle stimulating hormone(FSH), testosterone(T), progesterone(P), estrodiol(E2) were measured by radio-immunoassay and the ultrastructure of gonadotropin-releasing hormone(GnRH) cells, gonadotropin cells, Leydig cells, Sertoli cells, luteal cells, granulocytes and so on were observed by electronmicroscopy and microscopy. The calmodulin(CaM) mRNA expression in hypothalamus-pituitary-testis axis(HPTA) was detected by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS Cyp(2.4 mg*kg-1*d-1×14 d, ig) increased serum LH concentration while decreased serum FSH, P concentrations in female rats. Cyp(4.8 mg*kg-1*d-1×14 d, ig)increased serum LH, T concentrations in males, and increased serum LH concentration while decreased serum FSH, E2 and P concentrations significantly in females. The retrograde changes of ultrastructure were observed in part of gonadotropin and ovary endocrine cells, while a stimulating one in testis endocrine cells. CaM mRNA expression levels were elevated in testis but not in hypothalamus and pituitary in male rats. CONCLUSIONCyp had a negative effect on endocrine function in females, but a positive one in males. The ultrastructure showed relevant changes in target gland. Cyp promoted CaM mRNA expression in testis, which had close connections with Cyp′s stimulative effect in HPTA.
