AIM: To test and verify the effect of Shexiang Baoxin Pills(SXBXW) on treating acute vertigo. METHODS: Sixty patients with acute vertigo were randomly assigned to the treatment group(40 cases) and the control group(20 cases). The treatment group was given four pills of SXBXW by sublingually. The control group was drip-fed Betahistine Hydrochloride and Sodium Injection 250 mL. Both groups were drip-fed normal saline injection 250 mL plus Vitamine B_6 0.2g at the same time. RESULTS: After three hours of observation, both the drugs could significantly reduce the sympton of acute vertigo, and its therapeutic efficacies were similar. CONCLUSION: SXBXW has obvious therapeutic efficacy and less side effect.

Objective To investigate the proportion of different types, distribution of genders, ages as well as the relative factors in inpatient with glaucoma. Design Retrospective case series. Participants 5058 cases of inpatients in Xingtai Eye Hospital, Hebei province from June 2004 to May 2009 were included. Methods Statistical analysis was conducted for 5058 cases of inpatients with glausoma. Main outcome Measures The type of glaucoma, age, gender and their percentages. Results In all 5058 cases, the patients with primary glaucoma, secondary glaucoma and congenital glaucoma accounted for 59.07%, 37.92% and 3.01% respectively. Primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG) accounted for 88.65% in primary glaucoma, and primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) accounted for 11.35%. In PACG, acute PACG accounted for 53.15%, chronic PACG 46.85%;The female over forty accounted for 69.54%, male 26.95%. In POAG, the female over forty accounted for 69.54%, male 28.02%. From June 2004 to May 2005, POAG accounted for 11.32% in primary glaucoma, 12.44% from June 2008 to May 2009. There was no statistically significant difference. Conclusion In the central part of China, the majority of inpatients with glaucoma was PACG. It may relate to the regional, economic and cultural conditions.

PURPOSE: Cathepsin K is a potent collagenase implicated in human and animal atherosclerosis-based vascular remodeling. This study examined the hypothesis that serum CatK is associated with the prevalence of coronary artery disease (CAD). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between January 2011 and December 2012, 256 consecutive subjects were enrolled from among patients who underwent coronary angiography and percutaneous coronary intervention treatment. A total of 129 age-matched subjects served as controls. RESULTS: The subjects' serum cathepsin K and high sensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol were measured. The patients with CAD had significantly higher serum cathepsin K levels compared to the controls (130.8+/-25.5 ng/mL vs. 86.9+/-25.5 ng/mL, p<0.001), and the patients with acute coronary syndrome had significantly higher serum cathepsin K levels compared to those with stable angina pectoris (137.1+/-26.9 ng/mL vs. 102.6+/-12.9 ng/mL, p<0.001). A linear regression analysis showed that overall, the cathepsin K levels were inversely correlated with the high-density lipoprotein levels (r=-0.29, p<0.01) and positively with hs-CRP levels (r=0.32, p<0.01). Multiple logistic regression analyses shows that cathepsin K levels were independent predictors of CAD (odds ratio, 1.76; 95% confidence interval, 1.12 to 1.56; p<0.01). CONCLUSION: These data indicated that elevated levels of cathepsin K are closely associated with the presence of CAD and that circulating cathepsin K serves a useful biomarker for CAD.
